How Africa Can Forge Its AI-Powered Economic Future

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative force comparable to previous General-Purpose Technologies (GPTs) that drove past industrial revolutions, poised to bring about even greater changes in Africa.

Brad Smith, the co-chair and president of Microsoft, emphasized the significance of this technology when he stated, "Throughout history, technological advancements have reshaped economies," as he elucidated.

He states that the initial Industrial Revolution was fueled by advancements in ironworking, the subsequent one by electrification and machinery, and the most recent revolution—which has unfolded over the past five decades—by innovations in computer chips and software.

Smith points out that whenever a new Industrial Revolution occurs, people often focus on identifying the key leader," he says. "However, historical evidence shows that the nations making the greatest strides are typically those where the technology becomes broadly disseminated and embraced.

Since technology transforms all aspects of an economy, the nation that utilizes it extensively will reap the greatest benefits.

This can be clearly seen in the case of electricity: gross domestic product (GDP) grows as electricity is adopted and used. “There is no country where this is the exception,” Smith states. “And the same is true in Africa.”

He notes that the secret to achieving future success lies in implementing versatile technologies.

In this emerging AI age, we begin with the firm belief that it represents the next evolution of GPT.

According to Smith, countries aiming to successfully adopt a GPT must excel in four areas.

The initial point is the technology itself. "As it happens, each GPT relies on a technological framework. This gives rise to a novel economic landscape because each level within this framework corresponds to emerging businesses, different kinds of enterprises, and distinct employment opportunities."

The current AI technological framework comprises three tiers: infrastructure, platform, and applications.

“IS has an enormous presence,” Smith states. “It demands the billions of rands we’re putting into data centers. Similar to how you cannot generate electricity without power plants, artificial intelligence cannot function without these data centers.”

The platform level comprises both open-source and proprietary models designed to utilize data for training purposes. "It is here that a fresh wave of AI platforms and software solutions are coming into existence."

On top sits the application layer, enabling individuals to accomplish their tasks.

"Electricity brought about transformative changes at the level of appliances, and similarly today, with the AI technology stack, it is the applications that people interact with and utilize," Smith explains.

To develop a new AI-driven economy, you must have all three elements in place to kickstart the cycle. The infrastructure enables the development of models, which permits individuals to create applications—subsequently, this fosters more extensive expansion of the infrastructure.

He points to the South African Revenue Services (SARS) as a premier instance of an organization leveraging technology, including artificial intelligence, for tax collection purposes and transforming citizen interactions with governmental bodies.

When developing a new economy, both governments and businesses must focus not only on mastering the technology but also on understanding economics thoroughly, according to Smith.

“The economics of AI comes down to economic structure, financial architecture and business models.”

For instance, he points out that each technology stack includes an economic framework, where components at the base tend to be costly, whereas those at the summit are relatively inexpensive.

“It is the same with AI: you see billions of dollars invested at the infrastructure layer; and find students can start to build new companies relatively cheaply at the applications layer.”

Following this, it's essential to develop a financial framework. Smith points out that companies such as Microsoft are collaborating with partners to fund the establishment of AI infrastructure globally.

This usually begins with private companies and private funds, followed by sovereign wealth and additional public financing. This structure isn't solely aimed at releasing capital; it also focuses on stimulating demand.

When nations struggle to gather the necessary amount of capital, Smith suggests that they might consider forming partnerships within geographical regions. "An alternative approach to speed things up is increased usage by the public sector," he adds.

The government plays a crucial role in initiating this process, primarily through policy formulation and ensuring that all aspects of the public sector adopt the technology.

Developing appropriate business models is the ultimate, and essential, stage for achieving sustainable success. As Smith highlights, "We can gain insights from history showing that these business models tend to evolve."

The third crucial step for capitalizing on the emerging AI economy involves developing skills.

This is merely practical," argues Smith. "If it's crucial for something to be utilized across the entire economy, then the expertise needed for this should also be widespread throughout the economic landscape.

The earlier Industrial Revolutions tackled this issue through technical schools and apprenticeships during the first revolution; public universities funded by federal lands along with industry standards in the second; and workforce training alongside computer science programs in tertiary education during the third.

When considering large-scale skill development for the age of artificial intelligence, Smith argues that we require three categories of abilities: first, AI literacy, enabling individuals to utilize these technologies effectively in their tasks; second, AI engineering, an extension of traditional computer science; and third, AI system design, aimed at empowering non-technical professionals with the knowledge needed to integrate AI into strategic planning, operational procedures, and process optimization within businesses.

"Each nation requires a comprehensive AI talent plan to evaluate market demands and increase AI literacy," according to Smith.

This would cover more than just universities and technikons; it should also incorporate programs such as South Africa’s Youth Employment Scheme (YES), aimed at wider skill development.

For a technology to become truly pervasive, it must have a level of social acceptance, Smith says.

And for a technology to gain social acceptance, it needs to be both beneficial and reliable.

The development of a genuine strategy and framework of trust is essential for the future of AI.

To establish this trust, privacy, digital security, and ethical AI are essential, he notes.

This is precisely why we're developing AI governance from scratch, starting with internal corporate policies and extending to global regulations.

According to Smith, sustainability is a crucial component of the trust formula. He emphasizes, "It’s impossible to adopt a responsible stance towards AI without tackling the necessity for sustainable AI practices."

To turn the AI economy into a reality, companies and nations must concentrate on every aspect. "This is incredible, exhilarating, and intimidating," Smith remarks.

He emphasizes that the key to accomplishing everything lies in being inspired. "Consider all the incredible possibilities we have with AI."

“However, while we ought to find motivation in every potential success, we should equally draw inspiration from each possible failure.”

For instance, he highlights that it has been 140 years since Thomas Edison brought electric power to lower Manhattan. Nevertheless, currently, a significant portion of Africa’s population remains without access to electricity.

“This is a cautionary tale that should inspire is to do better,” Smith says.

We can aim higher, be more daring, and chase after something even Edison couldn’t have imagined.

Stunning 3D Scan Reveals the Inner Workings of a Mouse Brain

A pioneering research has produced the most comprehensive map of a mammalian brain ever recorded.

The 3D diagrams showcase over two miles of neural connections, nearly 100,000 neurons, and approximately 500 million synaptic junctions—all within a fragment of mouse brain not larger than a speck of sand.

Dr. Clay Reid from the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle stated, "Within this minuscule particle lies an intricate network of connections, governed by principles we are just starting to unravel."

The specimen originates from an external section of the brain called the cortex, a zone that plays a role in vision. Times reports.

Dr Forrest Collman, of the same Institute, said: 'By studying how the cortex functions in the mouse brain, we can generate better ideas and hypotheses about how our own brains work.'

His group thinks that having the ability to chart and examine the brain’s internal connections at this scale could pave new avenues for understanding and addressing neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's and autism.

He described it as the 'Google Maps for the brain', which doesn't just show major motorways but every small street, house and room inside that house.

Similar to how individuals utilize Google Maps to determine the optimal path from location A to location B, or simply to verify if such a route is possible, this comprehensive neural map enables researchers to identify whether two neurons are interconnected and precisely pinpoint where these connections take place.

What made this research particularly intriguing was that the mice needed their brain activity documented as they viewed YouTube videos. This enabled researchers to observe the interactions between various clusters of neurons.

Following this, they cut the tissue into 25,000 slices, with each slice being merely 1/400th the thickness of a human hair, before examining them through powerful electron microscopes.

The images were combined to generate a 3D model with the help of artificial intelligence. The final result not only depicts the structure but also illustrates which brain cells interact and the manner in which they do so.

Nuno Macarico da Costa from the Allen Institute remarked that one of the outcomes of their project reveals "just how extraordinarily beautiful the brain truly is."

Simply observing these neurons allows one to grasp their complexity and size, instilling an overwhelming sense of wonder towards the brain.

European Defense Startups Navigate Persistent Challenges

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, opportunities and investments for European defense startups have increased significantly, according to industry experts. Government actions and investor moves are transforming an area that was once synonymous with slow-paced progress.

A study released in February by the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF) and market analysis company Dealroom revealed that investment from venture capitalists in European startups focused on "defense, security, and resilience" surged by 30% over the two years leading up to 2024, totaling $5.2 billion.

This indicated a transition that was happening even prior to Russia's comprehensive attack in early 2022, as "core technologies" started being modified for military applications, according to Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky from NIF, who spoke with AFP.

He cited "additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, radio frequency technologies, and battery technologies" as areas that had already drawn investments prior to " sheer necessity" accelerating their application and development on Ukrainian battlegrounds.

However, the pressing requirement to advance cutting-edge battlefield technology — a swiftly evolving objective amid the turmoil in Ukraine — still faces numerous obstacles.

One of the biggest challenges lies in persuading investors – ranging from sovereign wealth funds and public banks to pension funds or family offices of affluent individuals – to invest capital in defense. This sector is frequently grouped together with “sin stocks.”

'Like gambling and drugs'

A company that encountered this issue is the German start-up Donaustahl, which quickly shifted focus from producing accessories for sport pistol shooting to crafting armed drones.

Despite generating significant attention at last year’s Berlin air and space trade show, “Donaustahl, being a defense firm, has thus far been excluded from financial support and capital market investments,” founder Stefan Thumann stated to AFP.

He lamented that it was "exactly like gambling and drugs."

Although Thumann mentioned that he is currently in discussions with potential investors, he also uniquely chose to reach out directly to the customers who support his business. He did this through an active online presence aimed at raising funds by offering digital bonds.

Navigating limitations related to defense technology or what are known as "dual-use" items—those applicable for both civil and military purposes—would necessitate amending current pacts governing how investment funds allocate capital, or establishing entirely new funds, according to Schneider-Sikorsky from NIF.

Some indications of progress have emerged from government bodies.

Last year, the European Investment Bank decided to eliminate the condition that "dual-use" firms they fund must obtain at least half of their income from non-military clients.

When examining European governments from an eastern to western viewpoint, one can observe a clear progression in their attitudes towards technology—from more aggressive strategies to more protective ones—according to Jack Wang, the UK Managing Director at the venture capital firm Project A.

For example, neighboring country Estonia, which shares borders with Russia, recently declared the establishment of a €50 million ($54.1 million) fund aimed at investing in defense as well as dual-purpose technology sectors.

Last month, Pia Santavirta, who leads Finland’s public investment fund Tesi, listed “defense technology” as one of the “emerging growth areas” they were considering.

Private investors are detecting opportunities worth trillions due to substantial planned expenditures hinted at recently by both Berlin and Brussels. In particular, Germany has modified its constitution to allow increased borrowing for defense purposes.

'Out in the cold'

At the opposite end of the spectrum lies the final consumer, where defense startups encounter military acquisition processes accustomed to dragging out transactions for several years.

"Most VC (venture capital) funds have got used to investing in software to sell to small businesses or consumers," Project A's Wang said, expecting their backing to "convert to revenue... within one-and-a-half, two years".

"The military sales cycle doesn't operate like that".

"Both cultures are going to have to change," said NIF's Schneider-Sikorsky.

Defence ministries may in future "have a defence tech company that is almost on contract with the military to produce and continuously upgrade capabilities, as opposed to just selling a bit of hardware that's going to be stockpiled," he added.

"Some countries just need to get away from their specific gold-trimmed solutions," Donaustahl chief Thumann urged.

We lack the time... I'm hoping the German army will update their purchasing process and eliminate certain overly complex barriers in bidding that end up freezing out smaller companies.

Is AI Leading Us Astray? – International Edition (English)

Based on findings from 2025 conducted by Prioridata—a U.S.-based data firm—an individual typically dedicates approximately 4 hours and 43 minutes each day gazing at their smartphones. Over the span of one year, this accumulates to roughly 70 full days spent engaged with these devices. Such statistics come as little surprise considering how extensively we have integrated various digital instruments like social platforms, instant messaging apps, along with built-in artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, into our everyday lives faster than ever previously measured throughout human chronicles.

Paradoxically, the introduction of computers around the turn of the millennium sparked opposition fueled by political and religious groups. This led to widespread fear and hostility among people, giving rise to numerous conspiracy theories such as concerns that 'robots' might someday attain autonomy and aim to obliterate humanity. Today, nearly two decades later, this initial resistance has evolved into a near-reliance on technology.

Collaboration between humans and AI systems, including well-known platforms like ChatGPT, MidJourneyAI, MetaAI, Grammarly, and more recently, DeepSeek AI, has transformed fields such as academia and journalism. However, growing concerns surround the reliability and credibility of information produced by these tools. Videos, images, and audio recordings—all can now be replicated or created within moments. Initially, rudimentary forgeries were often met with dismissal due to their obvious inaccuracies. Yet, in a brief period, they've evolved into sophisticated deepfakes utilized in news and media, making it ever more challenging to distinguish artificial content from reality. This raises significant questions regarding how AI might serve as a tool for spreading false information. Malicious parties could exploit this technology to promote specific agendas, potentially leading to large-scale manipulations driven by substantial financial backing. Such actions may result in widespread behavioral shifts, fostering extreme viewpoints and provoking disorderly conduct across different communities.

If we cannot rely on our senses, then what else can we depend upon?

Experts are concerned with how much individuals can be swayed by carefully selected content driven by algorithms and biased artificial intelligence systems that perpetuate current prejudices. The worries surrounding AI extend further than mere disinformation issues. They encompass concerns related to breaches of personal data, risks to employment stability, and fears of deliberate misguidance within society. In response to these challenges, efforts have promoted the deployment of AI detection tools designed to ascertain the proportion of textual and visual material produced through language-learning models. However, despite such measures, these safeguards often fall short due to vulnerabilities in their programming and frequent instances of incorrect alerts and susceptibility to manipulation.

Even though artificial intelligence does not generate fake news, it serves as a potent instrument easily available to everyone. This availability has facilitated the dissemination of inaccurate stories when misused. Some people contend that misleading information prevails regardless of AI, and the simplification of data contributes to our cognitive decline. Rather than rejecting AI outright due to these concerns, responsibility falls upon authorities, institutions, and citizens to promote responsible use and reap maximum advantages from this technology.

This problem requires promoting healthy skepticism, enhancing media literacy, implementing stricter governmental rules, and increasing openness regarding the use and advancement of AI.

In the end, AI will only be as trustworthy as the individuals who create and utilize it. As AI advances, we too must improve our skills in examining and rigorously assessing the information we encounter.

Teen Startup Founder's Rejected College Essay Goes Viral

A youthful entrepreneur, just shy of 19 years old, shared his college admission essay after facing rejection from several leading educational institutions in the nation —and numerous readers were unimpressed.

Zach Yadegari shared a post to X /Twitter on Monday about a slew of colleges he was rejected from. This included schools with notoriously low acceptance rates like Stanford University , Harvard University, Columbia University , Princeton University , Cornell University, Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania.

He gained admission to three lesser-known institutions: the University of Miami The high school senior, who founded the app Cal AI, mentioned that his business generates $30 million annually. He also stated that he maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA and scored 34 on the ACT. It's worth noting that the maximum achievable score on this test is 36. Additionally, he applied to universities such as the University of Texas and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Following his post, Yadegari shared screenshots of his college admission essay, wherein he described an "achievement, incident, or epiphany that triggered a phase of personal development and a fresh insight into himself or those around him."

His essay boasted about his accomplishments throughout the years, mentioning how he began programming at age seven and released his initial application on the App Store when he turned 12. By the time he reached 14, he asserts that he had made as much as $60,000 annually with his online gaming site.

He mentioned that after relocating to California to further develop his startup, his advisors advised him that "college was not necessary." He went on to talk about the achievements of his business, noting that his staff had reportedly expanded to include 15 members and that Cal AI became "the quickest expanding application within its sector."

Yet, after his application reached "a million dollars in revenue," he experienced a void and pondered about his "reason for being." Reflecting on his past decision to bypass college because he was committed to following "another set of expectations: the stereotypical drop-out entrepreneur."

In the end, he mentioned that he understood college goes "beyond being merely a right of passage" and expressed his desire to gain knowledge from fellow students and teachers instead of solely relying on "computers or textbooks."

Yadegari’s post has garnered almost 20 million views on X, drawing criticism from numerous individuals who accuse the student of appearing overly boastful and not adequately addressing the issue at hand.

"I don't intend to embarrass a young teen, but it's incredibly clear why a college wouldn't accept someone because of a statement like this. Honestly, I’m surprised there weren't individuals in this student’s life who took the time to clarify that point," a commenter noted.

“It’s not even a bad essay in any vague literary sense, it’s just full of a lot of stuff that pretty clearly communicates 1) a major risk of dropping out and 2) no particular interest in the specific school or program. Both major red flags for admissions,” they explained.

“This reads like a braggadocious cover letter more than a personal statement that showcases who you are as a holistic individual outside of your accomplishments,” wrote a second person.

A third person proposed: "The personal statement suggests you have a high likelihood of dropping out, which is why they offered your place to someone who genuinely wishes to complete their college degree."

Some believed Yadegari did not provide sufficient details on how attending college would be advantageous for him.

As someone who previously worked in an admissions office, my advice would be for you to trace how your past experiences have shaped your abilities and see how they match up with the major you're interested in," another individual suggested. "Illustrate how those skills will benefit the institution and clearly mention the specific courses you wish to pursue (make sure to highlight this connection too).

"My perspective is that you failed to address their core concerns adequately until the concluding paragraphs, which was rather brief. Additionally, you devoted excessive attention to explaining why college wasn’t necessary instead of focusing sufficiently on how it would be advantageous to you and beneficial for the community," someone else concurred.

Nevertheless, many individuals supported Yadegari’s essay and expressed their admiration for his accomplishments. Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, replied to the tweet stating, "That's insane."

I hope those criticizing the essay also reserve some criticism for the requirements that prompted it. Indeed, it might have boosted his admission prospects to fabricate a charity and hire someone else to pen sentimental nonsense about it. However, that’s often what driven 17-year-old boys tend to contemplate," one commenter noted. "Zach remained truthful and showed courage by sharing his story.

It’s incredible how many people choose to criticize and scrutinize your essay," another commenter noted. "I suspect they do this to sidestep acknowledging the extensive discrimination occurring... and what it reveals about our society that such issues persist.

The Independent Has reached out to Yadegari for their input.

When asked about what drives him towards attending college, he responded: "The main reason I want to go to college is for the social aspect."

The Independent has consistently maintained a worldwide viewpoint. Rooted in strong foundations of exceptional international journalism and analysis, The Independent now boasts a scope that would have been unimaginable upon its launch as a newcomer in the UK media landscape. In this era, for the first time since the conclusion of the Second World War, these core principles—pluralism, rational thinking, a forward-thinking social agenda, and global cooperation—are facing challenges globally. Despite this, The Independent continues to expand.

Hey AI, What Bit Me? Tech Saves Lives in Lethal Snakebite Crisis

On the scorched plains of Mayen Abun-Twic County in South Sudan, Apuk Bak rests on a hand-woven mat beside her home, gently touching the scars on her leg—an enduring mark of a brutal encounter with a poisonous serpent. She gazes towards the distant landscape, reminiscing about the moment the snake attacked. At just seven years old, Apuk was tending to her parent's livestock when a black mamba sank its fangs into her flesh. The venom surged swiftly throughout her body, rendering her senseless and forever impaired. Her household lacked appropriate medical assistance and resorted instead to conventional cures—such as uncooked eggs and herbal concoctions—that proved futile against the toxin’s ravages. "My kin offered me an unboiled egg along with certain plants they believed might purge my blood," recounts Apuk. "But soon afterward, swelling consumed my limbs; mobility became impossible. Eventually, darkness claimed me." Even today, at seventy-six, Apuk carries both bodily and emotional remnants from that calamitous event. "This condition impacts every aspect of who I am—it restricts movement and tasks requiring strength," she reflects sadly. "It feels almost as though time advances relentlessly due to this incident involving the viper. Had suitable antidote been available during those critical moments, perhaps things would differ greatly now." Such narratives aren't uncommon within Mayen Abun; stories related to encounters with serpents frequently interlace families' oral traditions much like intricate patterns formed by threadwork. Throughout Southern Sudan, peril lurks covertly among dense foliage where various lethal varieties cohabit—their venoms acting stealthily beneath skin layers causing untold misery amongst local inhabitants spanning multiple generations. Venomous strikes predominantly strike poorer sections located far away from adequate health services in regions including southern parts of Kenya and South Sudan itself, resulting in countless fatalities alongside irreversible handicaps. Climatic events coupled with ongoing conflicts compound issues faced locally since flooding compels reptilian residents toward residential zones occupied by humans seeking shelter. For extended periods, surviving depended heavily upon immediate recognition followed closely thereafter administering precise remedy based solely off visual cues regarding culprit specie involved. YouTube Streamer Tries To Buy A Chinese EV, But Can't Take It Home

IShowSpeed was so impressed by the Yangwang U9 he wanted to buy it, only to learn that he can't drive it in the U.S.

  • IShowSpeed is a 20-year-old YouTube streamer with more than 38 million subscribers.
  • He is currently in China, livestreaming his experience, including his time with cars like the Yangwang U9 and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.
  • He claimed to want to buy the U9, but was disappointed that he couldn't import it back to the U.S.

It’s interesting to watch just how fast the sentiment toward China has turned within the past few months. Perhaps it started with the ever-looming TikTok ban, only to reach a fever pitch when kids semi-ironically adopted Chinese social media Xiaohongshu and learned more about China. That meant learning about Chinese cars, too; it wasn't hard to find a Gen-Zer on social media bemoaning the fact that we can’t get a $10,000 BYD Seagull .

Generally, we wouldn’t report on any streamer or YouTube personality getting impressed by Chinese cars. But IShowSpeed is one of the biggest streamers on YouTube, with more than 38 million subscribers. He started out as a gaming streamer, but now he’s famous for his ostentatious personality and live streams in global locations.

Earlier that week he had got some passenger seat time with the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, but in this excerpt, he’s getting some action with a few other models. Namely, the Yangwang U8, U9 and the Aito M9.

Naturally, the Yangwang U9 supercar has his attention. “What’s this a Lamborghini? This sh*t looks sick!” he says, while toying around the car’s features. He’s really impressed with the car’s access to TikTok (called Douyin in China), which is natively integrated into the car’s infotainment screen. Most of the video is of him being in awe of the U9’s party tricks. Like, its ability to do tank turns. Or the fact that it can literally jump.

Yangwang U9

He was so impressed by the U9 (and later the U8) that he actually went to the owner and asked to buy the vehicle from him, right then and there. “Oh, if I buy it it’s got to stay in China?” he says. He tries to bargain a bit, asking if the car could be imported to his house in Portugal.

Now, IShowSpeed clearly isn’t a car guy. He’s impressed by the gimmicks and cool stuff on the cars, but he doesn’t know all that much—he’s clear about that in the video itself. But, IShowSpeed’s charismatic delivery and huge outreach are probably a boon for BYD (and Aito). The comments sections and chats of his livestreams are full of similarly impressed viewers, many of them irritated that they can’t buy any of the cars in his video.

Tariffs may have made the idea of Chinese EVs an implausible pipe dream. But, if things change and BYD or others figure out a way to the U.S., these brands could have a surprisingly strong fan base among young people.

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech: The Iconic Return of an Electric Legend

The Renault 5 was once a iconic figure in automotive history. Today, it returns as an electric vehicle with a vintage twist, fully grasping its mission.

"Highly awaited" is a term frequently thrown around, yet I genuinely cannot recall ever being this excited to slide into the driver's seat of a new vehicle. Renault 5 E-Tech Electric , known in full, was initially conceived in 2021 as an updated version of the French company’s compact car designed for the masses. Those familiar with it might recognize it under the nickname Le Car; others may have forgotten about it entirely. Enthusiasts, however, could recall the high-performance variant. Renault 5 Turbo instead.

Regardless, Renault’s initial hatchback evolved into an iconic model that combined cost-effectiveness with functionality and sleek styling. This internal combustion engine vehicle remained available for almost 25 years and seemed ubiquitous across European highways. Reviving this design exclusively as an electric car now is touching many individuals in our region quite deeply.

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech Assessment

We've had varied outcomes with this strategy in the past, most recently with the reintroduced Ford Capri. Does the electrified version of the Renault 5 fare any better?

I'm delighted to provide you with a succinct response: absolutely.

What Is It?

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech Assessment

A compact urban vehicle designed for everyone, yet inspired by yesteryears. Although Renault arrived somewhat belatedly to the vintage trend—a genre dominated by brands like Mini and Fiat—their concept car certainly garnered attention upon unveiling. Even though nostalgia can be powerful, the limited electric vehicle options available then weren't particularly exciting; however, Renault offered a glimpse of anticipation with their creation.

A recognizable design, a fresh platform, and an attractive pricing make it one of the most discussed new vehicles this year. However, if it performs poorly, it might discourage those looking to move away from internal combustion engines (ICE).

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech Assessment

What Are The Specs?

Priced sharply, it starts at £22,995 ($29,800) in the UK. Similar to its predecessor, it is not positioned as a luxury car but rather as one for all consumers. You can select between two battery choices, both delivering energy to a solitary motor driving the front wheels.

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech Assessment

The base model 5 comes equipped with a 40kWh battery delivering 120 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque, offering a range of 192 miles or 310 kilometers as per the European WLTP standards. Alternatively, there is an extended-range option featuring a 52 kWh battery that provides 150 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, capable of reaching up to 252 miles, which is equivalent to 405 kilometers.

The compact battery vehicle accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 9.0 seconds, whereas the larger model accomplishes the same feat in just 7.9 seconds. Despite their size difference, both models reach a maximum speed of 93 mph (150 km/h). This exceeds most European speed limits except those found on German highways without set speed caps; hence, they perform sufficiently well. In terms of recharging capabilities, the car with a 40 kWh battery supports up to 80 kW rapid charging, enabling it to charge from 15% to 80% in approximately 31 minutes. On the other hand, the version equipped with a 52 kWh power pack can achieve the same state of charge range within about 30 minutes using a 100 kW charger. While these recharge rates might seem ordinary, consider that these vehicles prioritize affordability and urban driving over long-distance travel requirements.

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech Assessment

It's significantly larger than the initial model, which isn't surprising since hitting this newer version wouldn't result in such severe consequences like merging with the A-Pillar or having the steering wheel pierce your solar plexus. (Such outcomes are generally considered undesirable nowadays.)

This doesn't imply ample storage space in the trunk—there's only 11 cubic feet available when the seats are upright, which increases to 39 cubic feet when they're folded down. This could suffice for your grocery shopping trips or short drives within the city, but fitting all four passengers along with their baggage might pose some challenges.

2025 Renault 5 E-Tech Assessment

I was driving the 52 kWh model in Techno trim. This version represents the mid-tier option, yet it offers appealing color choices (the highest trim level doesn't offer green with a contrasting roof, plus it misses out on the most stylish wheels, among other features).

With a weight of 3,219 lbs, it's practically lightweight for an electric vehicle. Combined with decent power output, zipping through city streets becomes quite enjoyable. The acceleration won't jerk your neck forward, making it stand out in today’s market where many high-performance models boast extreme speed claims; this subtlety is surprisingly pleasant.

The vehicle offers four drivable modes accessible through a "multi-sense" button located on the steering wheel. These options include Comfort, Sport, Eco, and Perso (which Renault calls "personal"). Each mode alters aspects like steering resistance, engine responsiveness, and several others. For leisurely city driving, the Eco setting works just fine; although not overly energetic, this isn't an issue when vehicles typically move no faster than 11 mph. Most of your drives can comfortably be handled with the Comfort option: the steering provides appropriate feedback, acceleration responds promptly, and overall operation seems quite pleasant. Sport mode certainly livens things up and adds excitement during twisty roads, yet for casual urban cruising...it might seem excessive. In essence, you probably won’t require anything beyond these settings for typical use cases.

The Renault 5 is likely to see most of its time spent in town. Its dimensions make it well-suited for urban environments, the steering is responsive enough for easy maneuvering around corners, and its relatively low power output reduces the likelihood of speeding tickets. Additionally, with a WLTP range sufficient for at least a week's worth of commutes before needing a charge, it should handle daily driving needs efficiently, assuming everything goes as planned.

On the freeway, everything feels smooth, silent, and cozy. The car's suspension allows for somewhat intriguing tremors when driving over bumpy terrain; however, considering what Renault is asking for this vehicle, one shouldn’t anticipate floating along like clouds.

If you decide to step up your game and engage the Sport mode, you'll likely find yourself amused rather swiftly. The vehicle accelerates smoothly even at higher speeds, offering satisfyingly robust feedback from the steering wheel set to its firmest configuration. However, applying excessive acceleration out of turns might cause mild understeering due to its relatively modest horsepower and curb weight; yet these very attributes contribute positively to an enjoyable driving experience when desired. Despite this, the car's mass becomes quite noticeable during spirited drives, and traversing uneven road surfaces may result in a somewhat jittery ride quality. While it certainly doesn’t compete with traditional hot hatches, it remains entertaining whenever you seek some excitement.

What’s Good?

Renault has excelled with the interior design. Instead of opting for an overly simplistic and screen-dominated approach to cut costs, they've added various textures and intriguing elements throughout the cabin. This gives it a charming vintage feel without sacrificing modern convenience. While many functions can be managed through a large 10.1-inch touchscreen, the Google-powered entertainment system, complete with CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, is user-friendly and easy to navigate.

When it comes to compact vehicles, the handling stands out. It's enjoyable, lively, and brings joy to driving enthusiasts. Using youthful lingo, you could say it has great vibes. The reasonable price further adds to its appeal. Shoppers no longer feel compelled to opt for mundane options just to enjoy their time behind the wheel.

What’s Bad?

On a 50-degree Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) day, with varied driving conditions, Renault reported achieving 3.1 miles per kilowatt-hour. This calculation suggests that the 52-kilowatt-hour battery could travel slightly over 161 miles on a single charge. While this falls significantly short of the advertised range of 252 miles, colder temperatures in London can impact performance like this. Under milder conditions or with careful, slower driving, it likely would manage a greater distance; however, even then, it represents a substantial reduction from expectations.

The A-pillars are quite substantial too, making visibility at intersections somewhat challenging when maneuvering into very tight spaces. Although this vehicle qualifies as compact within electric and American markets, it remains considerably larger than many others. Therefore, do not anticipate squeezing effortlessly into the narrowest openings available.

What Is It Like as an Electric Vehicle?

It perfectly fulfills its purpose. Sure, the maximum charging speed isn't incredibly fast, but this vehicle excels at urban driving and shorter journeys. The regenerative braking is smooth, which means you won't suddenly feel pulled down when navigating through city streets.

The actual performance was somewhat unexpected, yet it wasn't poor enough to warrant heading to your closest Renault dealership with protest signs. Since Europe hasn't joined the NACS system, it utilizes Type-2 connectors instead.

If you're a seasoned electric vehicle enthusiast, you won't notice anything unusual, but newcomers will not feel like they're missing out on typical 'car' features.

Early Verdict

The new Renault 5 is a wonderful little thing, all told. It’s best suited to the city, at least when it’s chilly, and its slowish charging means longer journeys may require a bit more commitment than some may be willing to put in. It’s not just a good EV, but it’s a good car full stop. The price isn’t even bad, either.

The excitement is genuine, and the enthusiasm is well-deserved.
