Empowering Youth: The BCC Initiative (International English Edition)

The BULAWAYO Vendors and Traders Association along with the local government have teamed up to equip young people with technical abilities aimed at initiating self-reliance ventures.

The Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association Executive Director, Michael Ndiweni, stated that this program aimed to remove young people from the streets.

"We have involved our local authorities because we have an initiative where young individuals aged between 18 and 24 will receive education on solar panel installation and home electrical work, equipping them with essential skills to improve their job prospects," he stated.

Ndiweni stated that the local administration had provided vocational training centers for this program.

"We have approximately 150 young individuals eligible to participate in this program, and the local authorities have allocated three vocational training centers for us located in Mzilikazi, Makokoba, and Pumula," he stated.

By early next week, the students could begin learning new skills since our orientation concluded at the end of last week.

Ndiweni said thousands of youths were wallowing in poverty without any source of income.

"We plan to keep collaborating with our local authorities to carry out initiatives that bring progress to our city, just like when we previously worked alongside them to construct the Nkulumane marketplace, an endeavor aimed at boosting economic development," he stated.

Councillor Adrian Moyo from Ward 2 praised the program as an essential step in combating drug and substance abuse.

"The solar initiative program will enable our local government to undertake socially responsible projects for the community, thereby equipping young people with skills and engaging them constructively, thus steering them clear of drugs and substance misuse," he stated.

Moyo indicated that this initiative would equip young people with necessary skills and provide them with improved methods for earning an income, thus fostering development within the city.

Unemployment Crisis: 53% Youth Jobless, a Growing National Security Threat – Kaleanovic

Dr. Yemi Kale, who serves as the Group Chief Economist and Managing Director of Research and Trade Intelligence at Afreximbank, has cautioned that increasing youth unemployment in Nigeria poses a significant risk and must be regarded as a matter of national security.

Kale made these remarks on Wednesday during the 2025 Vanguard Economic Forum, titled 'Nigeria’s Economic Outlook 2025: Hardship and Paths to Sustainable Recovery', which took place in Lagos.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) for the second quarter of 2024 fell considerably to 6.5 percent from 8.4 percent in the first quarter of 2024.

According to the report, "The unemployment rate measures the proportion of the labor force that is jobless yet actively seeking employment and willing to work. This metric falls within the broader category of labor underutilization. In the second quarter of 2024, the unemployment rate stood at 4.3%, marking a rise of 0.1 percentage points from the corresponding time frame in the previous year."

On Wednesday, Kale, a previous DG of NBS, commented, "It is crucial to address both unemployment and underemployment, which exceed 53 percent in Nigeria. There is a risk that this could transform our potential demographic dividend into a demographic crisis. Annually, between four to five million Nigerian youth join a job market where employment opportunities aren’t growing at a sufficient pace. This situation poses not only an economic challenge but also represents a significant national security concern."

To tackle this issue, we should focus on investing in vocational and digital skill development programs aligned with rapidly growing industries. Increase financial assistance and regulatory backing for micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs) and startups. Develop employment-connected initiatives in areas like renewable energy, logistics, and agriculture processing, along with offering incentives to the private sector for hiring via tax breaks and wage subsidies.

Regarding the problem of food insecurity affecting approximately 25 million Nigerians, Kale identified low productivity, instability in agricultural areas, climate-related disasters such as floods, and insufficient infrastructure and limited market access as key factors.

“We need urgent interventions across the food value chain: rural road networks, cold storage, irrigation, security in farming belts, and better inputs. Solving this is not just about agriculture— it’s about survival, dignity, and national stability,” he averred.

Kale issued a caution regarding the nation's financial stability and debt levels, highlighting that the debt service-to-revenue ratio is above 40 percent.

This serves as an unmistakable red flag. Despite our current debt-to-GDP ratio being relatively low at 34.2 percent, our available fiscal room is diminishing. Eliminating fuel subsidies was indeed a crucial move. However, unless these savings are channeled towards fruitful investments, we could lose public confidence and exacerbate income disparity. It’s essential to broaden the tax net using digital technology and stricter adherence checks. Give priority to affordable borrowings and exchanges of debts for developmental projects. Enhance openness in governmental expenditures and debt disclosures. Work together more cohesively between national and local administrations.

As I conclude this analysis, the key question remains: How can we transition Nigeria from simply enduring economic challenges to effectively engaging in a fast-paced and rigorous global marketplace? Throughout our exploration, we've delved into issues like structural imbalances, weariness towards reforms, and fluctuating policies. We also looked at the effects of both local and worldwide disruptions, learned valuable insights from successful cases abroad, and contemplated our path toward implementing changes. Ultimately, what becomes clear is that the issue isn’t a lack of concepts; rather, it’s a deficiency in putting those concepts into practice.

The solutions aren't novel; the proof is clear. What Nigeria hasn't had isn't a lack of understanding but consistent political resolve, disciplined institutions, and compassionate leadership that matches reforms to the populace’s needs. Instead of questioning what actions we ought to take, it's crucial for us to ponder why these steps haven't been taken yet—more critically, how can we implement them firmly, persistently, and honestly?

Dele Oye, who serves as both the chairperson of the event and the president of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, opened the discussion with remarks stating that due to recent protectionist actions taken by America, it has grown crucial for Nigeria and other African nations to capitalize on intra-African trade and free trade areas to foster economic development.

He, who is also the Chairman of the Organized Private Sector of Nigeria, stated, "Being entrepreneurs, we are inherently optimistic; whenever we encounter a challenge, we simultaneously seek out the possibilities."

Rather than concentrating on our current position, let's consider engaging with other partners and expanding our trading activities to boost our opportunities. Additionally, when it comes to investing in infrastructure, it’s extremely challenging to develop the whole nation entirely. We aim to utilize free trade zones as a model, similar to how China has done.

Comparing China’s progress during Deng Xiaoping’s era and Dubai’s rapid development, Oye contended that free trade zones could act as key drivers of economic expansion. He warned against imposing taxes within these areas, stressing that such measures might deter private investment and hinder growth.

"The government presently controls just a minor portion of the 50 free trade zones in Nigeria, which are predominantly fueled by investments from the private sector. Imposing taxes on these areas would be similar to the Federal Government requesting private investors to cover tuition costs for schools, thus diminishing their edge over foreign competitors," he contended.

Oye emphasized the importance of safeguarding and promoting sectors that ensure employment, drive innovation, and enhance national competitiveness.

One major issue highlighted is Nigeria's persistent export of raw materials rather than boosting local processing capabilities.

Enhancing domestic production is vital for intensifying tech transfer, generating more employment locally, and increasing export worth twofold. The NACCIMA president further emphasized that improving the general commercial climate, putting resources into education and workforce development, along with fostering innovation and technological advancement—especially within areas such as fintech—are key factors in propelling GDP expansion.

In the meantime, Dr. Tayo Aduloju, who leads the Nigeria Economic Summit Group as CEO, advocated for increased interaction between the private sector and the government to foster economic change in Nigeria.

Aduloju stated that genuine economic advancement occurs when the private sector and government collaborate effectively towards defined objectives, ensuring distinct roles and maintaining strong accountability measures.

He clarified, "For each example that Dr. Kale shared today from Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia regarding their growth, it was due to an agreement within both the private sector and the government to collaboratively drive economic change."

If we decide today that transforming the energy sector is our objective, then the energy plan should encompass two key aspects: actions required from the government and those needed from businesses. Additionally, there must be systems of accountability and oversight to ensure everyone fulfills their responsibilities correctly.

Ethan Nwaneri's Meteoric Rise Compared to Wayne Rooney’s at 18: An International Edition Exclusive

Arsenal Acting sensation Ethan Nwaneri recently celebrated his 18th birthday. How does his current performance metrics stack up against those of Wayne Rooney during his time with Everton as one of the premier league’s standout young talents?

It's quite uncommon to make a significant impact on the stage before reaching an age where you can legally drink a pint. Only Michael Owen and Rooney have accomplished this. netted additional Premier League objectives Before they turn 18 years old, more people have accomplished this feat than Nwaneri has.

Nwaneri made history as the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League when Mikel Arteta brought him on during the final minutes of a 3-0 win against Brentford in September 2022.

At the age of 15 years and 181 days, he became the sole player in Premier League history to participate in a match before reaching 16 years old.

In contrast to Rooney, the young talent from Arsenal had to wait patiently for additional chances. His short stint as a substitute remained his sole senior team outing that season, with just one more appearance throughout the complete 2023-24 season.

By the time he turned 17, he had emerged as a key figure for Arteta’s Arsenal squad—his exceptional skills have been especially valuable during an offensive injury crisis, providing him with the chance to secure a consistent spot in the lineup.

Rooney surprisingly ranks as the 17th youngest player to make a Premier League appearance. He was just 16 years and 297 days old when he first played for his hometown team, Everton, in an exciting 2-2 tie against Tottenham at Goodison Park in August 2002. Rooney started the game and helped set up Mark Pembridge’s opening goal.

The young man from Croxteth never looked back after that point, quickly establishing himself as a key member of David Moyes' main team.

"It's a remarkable achievement and a distinct aptitude, specifically an English one, which stands out as the most impressive English talent I've encountered since coming to England; without question, he possesses all the qualities we aspire to see," said a generous Arsène Wenger to Sky Sports following a 16-year-old Rooney showcased his prowess by scoring a spectacular late equalizer against Arsenal.

He demonstrates intelligence, swift responses, proficiency when maneuvering with the ball, rapid advances, and undoubtedly excels at finishing.

This marked Rooney's inaugural Premier League goal, coming only six days prior to his 17th birthday in October 2002.

"I hope he won’t get hurt over the next two or three years and that his mind remains strong enough to handle everything going on, but he certainly has immense potential," Wenger said additionally.

Well, it's premature to discuss whether he'll leave Everton for an elite club. However, based on my honest assessment, he should remain with Everton until he proves his worth there. At this stage, he must focus on taking one step at a time and staying grounded; these are crucial aspects.

Rooney's exceptional play broke Arsenal's 30-game undefeated streak. Later, during Manchester United's match against Arsenal in October 2004, which marked the end of their historic 49-game unbeaten run known as the 'Battle of the Buffet' at Old Trafford, Rooney would score again.

Some people have suggested that Rooney didn’t completely fulfill his potential, but this seems far-fetched considering he became both Manchester United’s and England’s all-time leading scorer (a record later surpassed by Harry Kane).

Rooney made over a hundred international appearances and led the English national team towards the end of his career. Throughout his playing days, he claimed five Premier League championships, one FA Cup, one UEFA Champions League title, and three League Cups. Only Alan Shearer and Kane have netted more goals in Premier League history.

It's quite impressive that Nwaneri’s performance so far can stand up to a young Rooney during his time at Everton. However, we should approach these statistics cautiously, considering that Nwaneri is playing for an Arsenal side currently ranked second in the league, unlike Moyes' Everton which ended up seventh when Rooney made his mark in the 2002-03 season.

Nwaneri has not received his first call-up for England yet; however, he will likely be considered by Thomas Tuchel in the coming months and years. Rooney, on the other hand, became part of Sven-Göran Eriksson’s senior team at age 17, netting twice in seven appearances before turning 18.

However, for this comparison, we've focused solely on their statistics from their club careers.

Here’s how Ethan Nwaneri’s current career statistics stack up against Rooney’s performance at Everton when he was 18 years old:

Experts Urge Nigerian Youth to Harness AI for Societal Challenges

The government of Lagos State along with ICT professionals have encouraged Nigerian youths to adopt AI technologies for addressing various social issues.

During the 2025 Commonwealth Day organized by the Tantacom Group and the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) at the University of Lagos, Akoka, on Friday, they offered their insights. The event’s theme focused on "AI, Youth, and the Future of Work."

At an event graced by hundreds of young individuals and students, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, stated that AI has not just altered the way people work but has also reshaped the fundamental aspects of productivity and creativity.

Ogunlende emphasized that the influence of AI on work should not be underestimated. He pointed out that throughout various sectors, AI has transformed task execution methods, cutting down both the time and effort needed to attain outcomes.

He said: “AI as an ally empowering the youth for the future of work. Instead of viewing AI as a threat, young people must embrace it as a partner in their professional journey. AI offers three key advantages that can reshape the future of work for youth. Whether in writing, music production, app development, or business strategy, AI allows young innovators to test their ideas quickly and refine them before presenting them to the world.

A budding entrepreneur can leverage AI technology today to develop a business plan, construct a financial model, and devise a marketing approach—all accomplished within 24 hours. The impact of artificial intelligence extends beyond mere automation; it’s also giving rise to novel career paths. Emerging sectors like AI ethics, machine learning engineering, data science, and AI-supported design present promising opportunities for young individuals seeking rewarding professions.

The Special Advisor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, also commented that the Lagos State government is prepared to assist youths involved in artificial intelligence initiatives. He emphasized that embracing this technology would lead to an increase in employment opportunities for young individuals.

He stated: "What you witness today or what the AI portrays is indicative of things to come. However, it won't have an immediate impact. The key is simply learning how to access this technology, after which the AI will adapt accordingly. Some believe this lies ahead in our future. In my view, these developments are happening right now. We must embrace them and begin leveraging AI."

In Lagos, we have plenty of opportunities for young people. We are prepared and committed to moving ahead with these initiatives. Furthermore, we will keep supporting each young individual contributing positively.

Earlier, during her address, the Co-CEO of Tantacom Group, Mrs. Jennifer Odufuwa, stated that this year's Commonwealth Day theme urges us to work together, foster innovation, and build a future in which nobody gets left behind as we advance into the digital era.

Odufuwa stated that AI is transforming sectors, reshaping employment, and generating fresh prospects at an unparalleled rate.

Artificial Intelligence forms the bedrock of our future. It is reshaping fields ranging from finance to healthcare, from agriculture to creative domains. It is phasing out obsolete jobs while simultaneously generating new opportunities. This necessitates a reconsideration of how we approach education, skill development, and workplace preparedness. However, let us be clear about this point: Artificial Intelligence will not supplant human beings.

The Co-CEO of Tantacom Group, Mrs. Olufunke Adu, also commented that Commonwealth Day isn’t just an occasion; it’s a global initiative spanning 56 nations aimed at bringing young people together to explore opportunities within the field of artificial intelligence.

Adu stated, "Our aim is for young individuals to acquire skills in leveraging artificial intelligence, recognizing that it represents the future of employment. Without these capabilities, they may struggle to excel in upcoming years and should understand that AI isn’t just about the distant future; it’s happening right now. Therefore, they must act by starting to enhance their knowledge in this field."

Speaking on the launch of the Commonwealth AI Academy, Adu said it is an academy that is free where young people can learn any kind of skills regarding machine learning and artificial intelligence. “And they have various courses on the platform, and it’s a self-paced programme. So you can go on it, look for programmes that you feel that you can learn, and begin to learn it.

"In Africa, our aim is not to have Nigerians, particularly those from Lagos, merely as observers. That’s why we are spearheading this discussion—we desire active participation from them. This presents an invaluable chance for them to gain knowledge that can significantly aid them professionally. It offers opportunities to acquire new skills which will prove beneficial once they enter the workforce. Moreover, such experiences will enable them to improve themselves, fulfill their responsibilities more effectively, become exemplary individuals, and positively impact their workplaces overall," she stated.

Abdbasit Saba, the Country Representative for the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC), stated that the organization will keep striving to recognize young individuals globally for their role in advancing AI technology.

Saba stated: "Nigeria has a distinctive approach when it comes to seizing opportunities. We stand together under the Commonwealth flag as well as through the Commonwealth Youth Council, which serves not only to magnify our voices but also to guarantee recognition for youth worldwide."

The Chief Partnership Officer at Wema Bank, Mr. Ajibade Laolu-Adewale, stated that in today’s world, survival would be impossible without AI. According to him, humans cannot effectively manage their daily lives without AI-powered tools addressing various issues.

"So, from a technical standpoint, today, I had the chance to address the students about the future job market. AI can help them excel in their chosen fields. It opens up various opportunities across multiple sectors and industries. As we progress, AI itself will improve," he explained.

The President of JCI Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Atanda, also spoke about this issue, stating that the youth should welcome AI since it does not compete with them. According to her, AI provides young people with the chance to enhance their skills and become better individuals.

Regarding the prospects of using AI, Atanda commented, "AI has the potential to generate more job openings than it removes provided you embrace these technologies; this will lead to increased possibilities. Since those who possess the know-how and abilities to revamp their communities and workplaces gain a significant advantage over others."

In a discussion led by tech attorney and AI optimization consultant Bukola Ogunsakin, the panelists—Ayotunde Ayoola, founder of Stringify Consulting; Peter Oriaku, team lead at Google Africa’s SEO division; John Atomode, COO of DAcubcn Technology Ltd.; and Chioma Nwahiri, head of business development for MoMo PSB—instructed the youth to harness artificial intelligence constructively as a means to advance societal progress.

Here’s what you should be aware of:

  • In 2023, his father, David Wandera, passed away after he was struck by a vehicle on Jinja Road in Busia Town.

Thank you for choosing Nation.Africa.

Francis Wandera, an ambitious Ugandan student, has moved one step nearer to realizing his long-held ambition of becoming a physician following his achievement of grades B-A-B in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics during the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

Wandera, aspiring to pursue Human Medicine at Makerere University, has encountered significant personal challenges, such as the heartbreaking death of his father.

In 2023, his father, David Wandera, passed away after being struck by a vehicle on Jinja Road in Busia Town. Working as a construction laborer and taking up temporary jobs, he strived to support his household and held education in high regard.

My spouse insisted that all our offspring should pursue their studies for a brighter future," stated the student's mother, Betty Missnya, who has supported her family through bakingchapatis and doughnuts. Thanks to a scholarship from Busia Trust School, Wandera successfully completed his secondary education.

A father’s determination

Wandera remembered when his dad stood up to a school gatekeeper who prevented him from entering the grounds at 5 a.m.

"Our house was merely a short distance from the school, and I typically arrived early. However, one day, the guard halted me, mentioning it was still too soon," he explained.

“The student noted that although their father wasn’t aggressive, he stressed the significance of education for their family.”

Benjamin Oguttu, who serves as the deputy headteacher at Busia Trust School, verified the occurrence and mentioned that their policy does not permit day students to be present so promptly.

Oguttu stated, "We were informed that a parent tried to challenge the guard when their child wasn't permitted entrance." The student consistently arrived at 5 a.m., which was before the authorized time.

Against the odds

In spite of facing numerous challenges, Wandera has stayed committed to achieving his educational objectives. Scoring 11 points on the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), he received a partial scholarship to attend Busia Trust School.

Now, with strong UACE results, he is optimistic about his chances of joining Makerere University’s medical program.

"I've always aspired to be a doctor, and I'm hopeful about achieving this," Wandera stated.

His narrative mirrors the challenges and fortitude of numerous Ugandan students pursuing advanced studies amid economic and individual hurdles.

At Last: A TV Drama So Good It Filled My Life With Gratitude

In my previous incarnation, I served as a teaching assistant at a preparatory school, which transformed me into a proponent of mandatory military service. Up until around age 11, the students were well-behaved and receptive to learning. However, after this point, they grew combative and preoccupied with sexuality, often dealing with acne issues. My aim was to encourage them to study "Lord of the Flies," but their lives seemed more consumed with actually experiencing those challenges firsthand.

Adolescence A television series that centers around the apprehension of a 13-year-old accused of murder offers nothing new to educators. However, it distinguishes itself from today’s overly manufactured content through its refined minimalism: utilizing just one camera and capturing everything in a single shot. The show navigates through legal proceedings with realistic pacing, almost like secretly observing a common misfortune unfold. Such timely storytelling is what the BBC claims exclusively belongs to them; however, it was actually Netflix that managed to create this compelling piece.

In every episode, the setting revolves around an organization—a police station, a school, or a detention center—that appears to operate mainly to suppress violent behavior. This preoccupation with controlling outbreaks leaves little room for their intended responsibilities. A friend messaged me saying, "This is the most accurate depiction of a high school I've come across on television." The reason? "They're constantly watching videos."

The students are detained in class to keep them away from the streets—one of them escapes through an open window—and the adults appear to be more naive than the children. The police struggle to understand why the boy named Jamie fatally stabbed a pleasant girl who seemingly admired him until a clueless teenager deciphers her Instagram messages. It turns out she was ridiculing him using emojis; meanwhile, Jamie saw this as a challenge to his masculinity. Andrew Tate "Damn," groans an officer, as though Tate — a fascist online personality — is like a serpentine force corrupting the innocence of childhood.

Experts have seized upon the show as evidence against the modern "manosphere" (a columnist even received the distressing title "If You Know a 13-Year-Old Boy, Talk to Him About What Being a Man Is," which seems reminiscent of something a predator might say). However, this storyline has been around for quite some time.

Lord of the Flies , Blackboard Jungle , Scum — All these dramas addressed the issue of young men's anger, and the writers behind them Adolescence Jack Throne and Stephen Graham suggest it is an inherent and recurring trait. Jamie’s father previously "destroyed the shed" out of anger; he was also beaten by his own father. The narrative comes across as a reflection on the Christian notion of Original Sin, which is often misinterpreted.

Today’s society often assumes that people start life with minds as empty as blank sheets of paper and become tainted by external factors such as poverty, racism, among others — thus dismissing the concept of original sin as an outdated notion from times when children were considered inherently evil and routinely punished. However, this perspective reverses the truth. The idea of original sin posits that humans are innately inclined towards goodness but face numerous temptations which they struggle to avoid because of their genetic makeup and upbringing. Recalling my early teens, I recall witnessing a friend nonchalantly ripping the limbs off a spider. At the time, I desperately wanted his approval, so I didn’t intervene.

Recognizing the inherent propensity for aggression in all boys marks the initial stage toward controlling this behavior via discipline and ethical instruction. However, our society not only rejects the fundamental nature of humanity but also harshly penalizes individuals who highlight this reality. Principals known for their strictness are branded as "elitists." Doctors advising men to embrace toughness are dubbed "harmful." Simultaneously, overly active children find themselves prescribed medications, while some exceptionally troubled youth end up being transitioned to female identities. The philosophy advocating constant compassion—eschewing labels and judgments at every turn—often yields unintended cruelty. This approach fails to impart knowledge regarding wrongdoing. Moreover, it merely burdens us further with these issues.

What might occur to Jamie? Can you envision the community forgiving him someday? Alternatively, even if he reconciles with his actions, will he manage to find self-forgiveness? In an indifferent universe, it becomes simple to be remembered solely for your most egregious deed.

From a Christian perspective, Jamie undoubtedly needs punishment; however, God, the loving judge, stays with him throughout his journey—from committing the crime to being confined in a cell—never forsaking him and encouraging him toward remorse.

Christianity, rather than being consumed by guilt, functions much like an industry dedicated to alleviating it—just as effective as Daz for bleaching clothes or as healing as penicillin. It provides prayers and sacraments aimed at helping individuals confront themselves and liberate themselves, enabling them to begin anew. Personal growth may span a lifetime; hence, maturing is truly remarkable. A highly acclaimed scene features Jamie interacting with his psychologist, where he shifts between acting like a frightened child complaining about a pickle in their sandwich and a grown-up hurling chairs and shouting, "What do you think of me?!" This encapsulates the core issue perfectly. Adolescents often believe they are constantly under scrutiny and ridicule.

Recently, our world has begun behaving this way. Social media acts as a mirror for narcissists, providing both a platform for seeking approval and one for facing mockery. It also serves as an uncensored arena where cyberbullying can flourish unchecked.

It was such a relief to mature beyond this nonsense! In the 21st century, which tends towards superficiality and materialism, aging is often associated with suffering and becoming outdated, something people try to delay using Botox or avoid through devices like Esther Rantzen’s deathpod.

However, indeed, it is an honor to grow older, to cultivate patience and understanding, and to have the ability to savor the subtleties of exceptional artwork, such as Adolescence , not glancing out the window, pondering when the bell will sound.
