Why Vietnam Is the Ultimate Family Holiday Destination: My Journey with Three Kids

  • Fiona Hardcastle explores Hanoi and Phu Quoc on a family holiday to Vietnam
  • READ MORE: Travel expert reveals the world's best destinations for solo tourists

The open-topped jeep – with defunct rocket propelled grenade strapped to the bonnet – is waiting for us outside reception.

It towers menacingly over the hotel's fleet of golf buggies but the doormen of the Intercontinental Westlake smile and help us into the vehicle as though it's a limousine.

Fifty years under Communist leadership might bring a nation down, yet the Vietnamese people remain as indomitable as they are resourceful.

Thus, several hours following our landing in its capital, we now find ourselves on a decommissioned Soviet vehicle, prepared for an exploration of Hanoi’s side streets.

Our climate has two varieties," explains our guide, handing out headgear to shield from the intense sunlight. "It’s hot and even hotter.

He possesses two kinds of hats: a Vietcong pith helmet or a conical bamboo one. Whether they're playing fighters or farmers, I inquire with the children as the try-on session starts.

Just because these aspects aren’t mutually exclusive doesn't mean they can't coexist. Given that Vietnam has been warding off foreign invaders for nearly two millennia and integrating both local ingredients with the finest elements of their adversaries' cuisines, this nation surely understands the art of fusion cooking.

Moreover, due to the increased prominence of these dishes on social media, my trio assures me they can distinguish their bun cha (meatballs) from their bot chien (rice cakes) long before we dive into the crowd.

First stop, the Hidden Gem cafe, so well hidden down an alleyway you could miss it altogether.

Decorated almost completely using reclaimed materials — three mismatched floors filled with tables and chairs that previously belonged to parts of motorcycles and machines — this place is vastly different from the sleekness of Gail’s establishment. I am concerned that my daughters might not appreciate the charm due to all the wear and tear.

Rose, 18, looks doubtful as we perch on stools made from old tyres and await our first banh mi. I've heard great things of the national sandwich – a French baguette with Vietnamese fillings of pate, pickled vegetables, pork and chicken – but make the mistake of saying so rather than leaving it to TikTok.

The sandwiches are served and the sceptics silenced. Emboldened, Evie, 16, orders an egg coffee. My husband and I exchange looks of relief. Our furthest venture east is off to a promising start.

Back on manoeuvres, and remnants of war and resistance are everywhere. My husband, dissuaded from making a family movie night of The Deer Hunter prior to the trip, excitedly points out the wreckage of a B52, its battered fuselage jutting from a lake. Felix, 12, lights up.

We navigate through a storm of scooters to get a selfie on the Long Bien Bridge, which has been destroyed and reconstructed multiple times, serving as a emblem of a nation that forgives yet remembers forever. Despite this, Hanoi remains as charming as it is resilient, with an uncontainable vitality that commands attention.

Shortly after reaching the Old Quarter, which consists of 36 alleys each named for their specific goods, the kids are set free with some money in hand within just a few minutes.

I let Rose choose lengths of satin as she describes her ideal prom dress to a tailor in Silk Street, while I explore nearby Silver Street looking for mementos.

Even though there isn’t an actual Shellac Street, Evie comes back with two pairs of gel nails, claiming they set her back only a quarter of what similar ones would cost elsewhere.

Felix never hesitates to take advantage of an opportunity when money is available. He effortlessly convinces his father to hand over some currency and goes back to the Jeep with a vibrant yellow toy goose that reaches up to his waist.

Following a swift search on Google for the Vietnamese term referring to the creature, the recently named Long Nong becomes part of the gathering as we head towards our last destination: Train Street.

After being temporarily closed due to safety issues in 2019, Instagram’s beloved railway has now fully resumed operations. It once again attracts throngs of visitors two times daily as they gather to witness an express train pass through a tight bypass. The locals living alongside the track must relocate their outdoor possessions each time the train approaches because the passage is extremely close-quartered.

Ingeniously, a cluster of cafes - some in people's living rooms - have cropped up providing ice cold beers and seating. We find a prime spot next to an electric fan and cheer as the 3pm to Ho Chi Minh City hurtles past.

Returning to the cool ambiance of the InterContinental Westlake, we are welcomed by the revered staff under a grand 10-meter chandelier. They inform us that shortly, cocktails will be available at the Sunset Bar—a round haven located on a petite island reached via several pathways.

It might not come as a shock that a hotel shaped like an open lotus flower exudes tranquility, yet thanks to its spacious areas and large family accommodations offering panoramic vistas of both the lake and the nation’s most ancient pagoda, one would hardly guess that bustling activity was merely a ten-minute drive away.

Time for a quick splash, I think, before I set eyes on the tree-lined pool with smart double loungers, and realise it will be a struggle to get us out before nightfall. Truth be told, it will be a struggle to leave Hanoi at all, each of us under the spell of this pulsating city whose past pushes headlong into tomorrow.

Our next stop - the island of Phu Quoc off the southernmost tip of the country - couldn't be more different.

Prized for its white sands and tropical jungle, it's recently leapfrogged from the category of sleepy backwater to bucket-list beaches, and development is accordingly on the rise. But there are developments - and then there's the Regent Phu Quoc.

Situated with a view of the Gulf of Thailand and nestled on pristine white beaches, the Regent caters to those who appreciate luxurious surroundings.

Although our massive villa—one out of 63 that surround two lagoons, with an equal amount scattered throughout the resort—has me grabbing for the aromatic relief provided by the Aqua di Parma room diffuser, it merges seamlessly into the garden scenery, almost making it invisible. Such is the essence of discreet luxury.

It's time to step up our style as I pull out my finest garments and oversee everyone preparing for dinner. It’s not easy though, with constant stops to appreciate the decor and furnishings.

The primary bathroom has me daydreaming about remodeling the one at my house, while the well-equipped kitchen, where you could even hire a private chef, is having a comparable effect on my spouse.

However, it’s when you catch the kids speaking positively not only about the always replenished selection of handcrafted chips and chocolates but also admiring the scattered abstract artworks throughout the area that you realize you’re definitely not in Kansas anymore.

The sensation grows stronger as you step outdoors and notice that everyone else is impeccably attired—even elegant dresses next to the swimming pool.

Despite its magnificence, the Regent remains unpretentious. The staff members are welcoming, considerate, and almost clairvoyantly observant. On the very first day, when servers notice that Rose enjoys having two portions ofsticky rice with each meal, they promptly provide an extra serving without her needing to request it from then onwards.

The devil is in the details—and numerous influences are at work here.

The canopy-covered first swimming pool offers a thoughtful gesture for Far Eastern guests who enjoy avoiding sun exposure, whereas the Speakeasy bar, featuring an exquisite jade-green interior accessible via a hidden entrance, serves as a tribute to American acquaintances.

However, it's the Bovi motif—a ladder-like design influenced by the timber trusses used in traditional Vietnamese houses—that winds throughout the resort, capturing our immediate affection.

As we eagerly select our spots while sitting down for dinner at Rice Market, the main eating zone, it becomes challenging to look away and focus on the menu.

Whenever we explore it, we discover such an extensive variety that even my eclectic clan (comprising two vegetarians, one finicky eater, a staunch meat lover, and a seafood enthusiast) could easily enjoy different meals every day for a whole week without repetition.

Even though, as Felix mentions, after tasting the wok-fried Wagyu beef, what reason would one have to opt for something different?

And once you've sampled the captivating contrasts of Vietnam, you may just feel the same.

Rooms at the Regent Phu Quoc start from £311 per night, including breakfast. Rates at InterContinental Hanoi Westlake, an IHG Hotel Starting at £106 for a Classic city view room, available on a bed and breakfast basis. Hanoi Backstreet Tours provide tours of the capital starting at £27. Fiona and her family traveled by air. Cathay Pacific .

Sailing Forever: Cheaper Than Home and Never Leaving Our Round-the-World Cruise

A pair has stated their intention to embark on a global cruise for the next 15 years in order to avoid increasing expenses at their residence.

Lanette and Johan Canen, who are both 55 years old, have been enjoying life aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship for half a year now. They mentioned that choosing to spend their retirement on this perpetual voyage was an easy decision.

The cruise offers a luxurious residential-style world tour, visiting 425 ports in 147 countries over a period of three and a half years—and their rental ensures they have a cabin for 15 years.

The couple had already been residing together in Hawaii For ten years, they thought they would be content living there until they embarked on a cruise vacation. After encountering the Odyssey, they became completely captivated.

Johan stated to Mail Online: "We owned a rental car business that we sold so we could afford our cabin."

People believe we must be extremely wealthy to manage this, but it actually costs less than our rent and expenses in Hawaii. This lifestyle is accessible to average folks.

The couple have an all-inclusive stay which includes food, drinks, WIFI and a cleaner twice a week - all for just £2,716 a month for the cheapest cabin option.

They had previously come across The World, a luxury residential cruise ship for the 'super rich' where you have to have 'millions worth of assets' just to be considered, Johan claimed. The Oydseyy was a much more affordable option.

To Lanette and Johan, this is about leaving their troubles behind.

'We don't have an exit strategy, we're both 55, we don't need things anymore. We just want adventures and experiences. We went from owning 31 cars to none,' Johan said.

'I find such bliss in having zero obligations here – they handle our laundry for us and change the linens twice weekly.'

The service is exceptional; we feel like kings and queens—they actually bow to us. We have absolutely no complaints, I adore this way of life," Lanette remarked.

If you're sharing a room, it costs only £1,403 per month for each person—roughly equivalent to the typical rental and utility expenses one would face in London—but lacks the level of pampering experienced when traveling globally.

'Lanette stated that with rents increasing globally, this will become the new mode of living.'

Johan commented, "This represents the future, particularly with the rise of remote work."

Currently, the pair resides in the Caribbean and has explored 25 nations up until now, such as Belfast, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, and South America.

Unlike typical cruise ships that remain docked at ports for just one day, passengers aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey have the opportunity to spend up to four days exploring each location.

Lanette and Johan disembarked from their vessel and stayed at a leased vacation home in Benham, Brazil, sharing the space with acquaintances for an affordable rate over the course of two evenings.

They also plan in May to get off at Mexico and visit their one year old grandchild in Arizona, United States, for the first time - where they will sublet their cabin for ten days.

And so far from home, friends and family can even visit them for up to 28 days completely free with their own room.

The couple have made friends on the ship who they consider 'family': 'The people here are so like-minded with shared values, and everyone comes with a story to tell.

'We've become like a family, so you're never alone,' Johan said

He added their favorite place so far has been the Galapagos Islands:  'We saw marine iguanas and sea horses as big as my hand.

'We love nature and unique things. The diversity of the marine life is totally different than anything in the world.

We have the chance to visit places we've never even heard of—locations that are incredibly distinctive and exciting. These destinations aren’t on your list of must-sees until you’ve experienced them for yourself!

However, one downside is that the erratic weather could result in missing out on some must-see locations.

We genuinely wished to visit the Falkland Islands, yet the terrible weather conditions forced them to shut down the port.

And in certain harbors, it might be challenging for the vessel to obtain specific food items for the menu and ensure that everybody is satisfied.

Johan mentioned that since he lives by the sea, he develops 'sea legs,' which help him adapt when he walks on solid ground.

I occasionally feel unsteady, as I need to find my balance during the initial steps, but it doesn’t concern me.

However, despite some minor setbacks, nothing can persuade them to abandon their newfound lifestyle.

It was an easy decision for us—we’re both a little wild and fully committed. Our friends and family didn’t bat an eye since this is just typical of who we are.

"We've got the maturity to handle this, yet we remain young at heart for such an adventure," Johan stated.

This Week in PostMag: Exploring China's Salt Capital and Cruising the Mighty Mekong

categories: , , , ,
Christopher St. Cavish talks China's 'salt capital', David Swanson leads us down a river cruise and Bibek Bhandari remembers 2000s-era Beijing

I was scrolling through Instagram, as one does, when a particularly arresting image stopped me. Roughly hewn wooden beams and rafters holding up a high ceiling. Puffs of steam caught in the light. A floor blanketed in white snow-like powder. "I really thought this was AI or game art" read one comment.

In fact, it was a photograph of a salt well in Sichuan province posted by Shanghai-based writer Christopher St. Cavish - the first in a carousel of photos from a week-long research trip to Zigong, once known as China's "salt capital", for an episode to air on his newly launched YouTube channel with photographer Graeme Kennedy. I messaged him immediately. It sounded like a story too good to miss, an expertly woven tale of how centuries of history can shape the way we eat today. The piece that came from it - this issue's cover feature - is accompanied by a striking image of Sichuan's salt drilling fields, taken by Swiss geologist Arnold Heim in 1929, along with photos of contemporary Zigong that Kennedy shot earlier this year.

Bibek Bhandari transports us to the Chinese capital (and back to the mid-noughties) as he chats with Glen Loveland, the American author of the recently published Beijing Bound . In 2007, Loveland moved to Beijing, which he describes as unexpectedly open. My first visit there was three years later and it was exactly that feeling that convinced me to make the move from New York. For Loveland, this openness led to a self-described gay awakening, and while I didn't have the same story, reading his made me recall my own early years in the city and the particular energy of mainland China at that moment.

Do you have questions about the biggest topics and trends from around the world? Get the answers with SCMP Knowledge , our new platform of curated content with explainers, FAQs, analyses and infographics brought to you by our award-winning team.

The rest of the issue takes us on a tour around Asia. Traversing Cambodia and Vietnam, David Swanson takes a cruise down the Mekong on the AmaDara where he reckons the region's violent past with its present. It's a beautiful and powerful journey that juxtaposes megacities against bucolic rural scenes.

In Osaka, Julian Ryall gets a sneak peek of the Expo 2025. He previews its many pavilions - I'm particularly intrigued by the Saudi Arabian one, which Ryall describes as "a tangle of alleyways, sheltered courtyards and water features like oases". I've never been to a World Expo, but it turns out this is my year. I'll be in Osaka in May. And you?

Rediscovering the Heady Charm of Ho Chi Minh City: An International Edition

As numerous times before, after arriving at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport, I walked out to a chaotic scene of joyous family reunions and taxi drivers touting for business.

I was greeted with a blast of 32-Celsius-degree heat, prompting me to quickly shed layers meant for airplane temperatures and a cacophony of beeping horns from automobiles jockeying for position at pick-up points.

Sunrise view across the Saigon River. Photo by Samantha Coomber

My airport transfer turned up late, apparently delayed thanks to the notorious traffic, which I reacquainted myself with as we slowly inched our way to my Dong Khoi Street hotel. Invariably, my taxi got gridlocked by a sea of motorbikes, with riders glancing down at me with the most disarming of smiles.

My first hour back in Vietnam and this is just what I expected – and missed. After reluctantly leaving during the Covid 'Delta variant' outbreak in mid-2021, after more than three years away, finally, I'm happy to be back in intoxicating, one-of-a-kind, Ho Chi Minh City, my former home.

In the ensuing weeks ahead, I discovered, however, there are a considerable number of developments and changes I didn't expect, but in a pleasantly surprising way. Not only has Ho Chi Minh City bounced back to normal life post- pandemic but is, for the most part, positively thriving, with a feel-good factor and vibrant energy so strong, you could almost plug it in.

A pulsating city on the move

Shortly after checking in, I quickly find myself needing to become tech-savvy. This involves downloading crucial applications for booking rides and excursions, ordering food deliveries, and translating between Vietnamese and English—functions that appear integral to daily living here (a true blessing). At the same time, massive electronic billboards dominate the city center, constantly displaying ads featuring attractive young people endorsing products ranging from beer to smartphones.

Although international visitors have come back, even during high season, I can't remember seeing so many before; nowadays, it’s become a ‘must-visit’. - head to 's destination. It’s challenging to find a seat before the long lines at trendy Western eateries, particularly those that have become social media sensations and places known for their banh mi. In downtown HCMC, I often feel like I might be knocked down by the throngs of tourists occupying the sidewalks. Each evening, these same crowds pack into the newly introduced open-top double-decker buses as they cruise through the city’s illuminated streets on guided tours (they look incredibly enjoyable; I’m almost enticed to join them myself).

In downtown shopping centers, visitors can be seen carrying bags from various global brands, weighed down by their purchases. Their animated conversations echo through the bustling food courts upwards into the multilevel lobbies. The city currently has three such establishments. Michelin-starred restaurants , I still love visiting my favorite neighborhood restaurants, tucked away in the more traditional districts, which are now bustling with customers once more. This includes the family-owned pho place and bun cha Places I often visited, like countless others, were compelled to close their doors during the later phases of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

It was during those extraordinary ‘Delta variant’ months of 2021 when numerous downtown businesses stopped operating permanently, a sight that was disheartening. Recently, however, I've found that upscale new eateries, chic rooftop lounges, and trendy boutiques have emerged or revisited familiar spots at lower rents. Moreover, several longstanding significant initiatives have finally come to fruition: the cable-stayed Ba Son Bridge Notable for its uniquely backward-sloping, curved pylon, the highly anticipated Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line opened in 2022. It began operating just days prior to my return in January.

Generated with considerable enthusiasm (which I shared, traveling via metro to Thao Dien), TIME magazine quickly placed this among the "World's Greatest Places for 2025."

Even Bach Dang Wharf has undergone a remarkable transformation, from a shabby, underutilized stretch in the center, to a bustling, shiny waterfront zone. Tourists, expats and locals now flock to the pier, not only for the riverside open-air cafés – hugely popular in the balmy evenings – but also, for the excellent new tourist-friendly boats that ply the Saigon River: a Bangkok-style, river taxi (Saigon Waterbus) and sightseeing cruise boats (Saigon Water Go), serenaded with live music.

Ho Chi Minh City’s infamous traffic isn't the same – actually, I'd swear it's got worse. There appears to be far more cars clogging up the streets, plus crossing the road seems even more hazardous – if that's possible. Souvenir tee-shirts sold in tourist haunts like Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Square increasingly feature designs that poke fun at the Saigonese lack of respect for traffic lights.

Reaching new heights

From the city center to the outer suburbs, the number of high-rise buildings has ramped up. True, some remain half-built, but along with pretty much elsewhere in the city, even those skeletal towers come to life come nighttime, attractively illuminated with bright fluorescent hues; so too, the cluster of drab residential tower blocks along the riverbanks. The Indochina-era, Notre Dame Cathedral, undergoing long-term renovations and engulfed in scaffolding, is itself magically transformed post-dusk into a giant grotto of fairy lights.

From the upper deck of a nighttime cruise along the Saigon River and my heavenly suite on the 38th floor of a downtown hotel (perched above an equally luxurious shopping center), I'm totally in awe of a glittering nighttime skyline that is starting to rival Hong Kong or Bangkok. The stars of this dazzling show are undoubtedly those well-established architectural masterpieces: the 68-storey Bitexco Financial Tower and Landmark 81, Southeast Asia's second tallest building.

Arriving here for the first time in 1998 (when I used to hail a taxi on the street, message home from Internet cafés and did the "airport run" in 15 minutes), over the years, I've witnessed first-hand Vietnam's largest and most cosmopolitan metropolis develop and reinvent itself on the global stage and flourish in stature. But it's especially pronounced on this visit.

Despite everything evolving over time, some constants remain. Ho Chi Minh City retains its timeless allure—remaining irresistibly captivating, vibrantly energetic, and charmingly eccentric. As I slowly make my way back to the airport, parting ways becomes unexpectedly difficult.

Ho Chi Minh City Faces Soaring Costs and Hotel Sellouts Ahead of April 30 Holiday

The cost of flights from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City has risen by approximately 15% since last year, and numerous hotels are completely reserved due to an influx of tourists planning to visit the city for the approaching April 30 celebration.

Thanh Luân, who hails from Hanoi but works in Ho Chi Minh City, mentioned that he intended to bring his extended family of ten people down from the northern region for the five-day celebration marking both Vietnam’s Reunification Day and Labor Day. The festivities run from April 30 through Sunday, May 5, and Thanh Luân was looking forward to witnessing a spectacular military procession along with various nationwide events commemorating half a century since the nation's unification.

Luán attempted to reserve hotel rooms for early April but found it challenging to locate available options. He mentioned that places offering lower rates usually didn’t align with his standards of comfort and cleanliness, whereas more upscale lodgings within his budget range were all taken.

On March 28, 2025, residents and visitors gathered to observe fighter jets and helicopters practicing for the forthcoming parade scheduled for April 30 in Ho Chi Minh City. The image was captured by VnExpress/Khuong Nguyen.

“Securing a room is tough enough, but obtaining air tickets proves to be twice as challenging, with prices being extremely steep,” Luan commented.

A survey conducted by VnExpress suggested that numerous travelers began their trip planning at the start of this year, with the busiest travel days stretching from April 27, which is the Sunday preceding the holiday, through May 4. During this timeframe, airfare prices have risen significantly in comparison to earlier weeks.

By April 2nd, return tickets from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City were priced anywhere from roughly VND4.7 million (USD$200) for overnight journeys up to VND6.5 million for peak evening flights over the holidays. During normal days in April, these prices usually fluctuate within the range of VND4-4.5 million.

Data from the Vietnamese travel agency Best Price indicates that airfares reached their peak on April 28 because of increased demand. Year-over-year, ticket costs for flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have risen approximately 10-15%.

A Best Price spokesperson noted that with fewer available flights and higher demand, ticket prices have increased.

Agencies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have observed that travelers predominantly favor departures on the evening of April 26 or the morning of April 27. Some flights operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet are almost entirely reserved at these times. Since early March, airlines have seen a significant increase in bookings during this period.

Nonetheless, certain travelers who made reservations prior to March found themselves paying fares comparable to today’s rates. Minh Duc, from Hanoi, secured his flight tickets 45 days ahead to join the parade. Despite these tickets costing him VND4.3 million—which was akin to prevailing prices at present—he felt content with having locked down an earlier reservation for greater assurance and improved travel arrangements.

Hotel rooms in HCMC are also filling up quickly.

VnExpress 's April 2 survey of online booking platforms like Booking and Traveloka showed limited availability in central districts such as District 1, District 3, and Phu Nhuan for stays between April 27 and May 4. Many downtown homestays are also fully booked.

Thi Quoc Duy, Director of the Independent Travel Center at BenThanh Tourist, said one of BenThanh Group’s five hotels is already fully booked, and the remaining properties are expected to reach full occupancy about two weeks before the holiday.

A representative from the 4-star Kim Do Royal Hotel Saigon said their 127 rooms, priced from VND2.3 million per night, were fully booked a month ago. Similarly, Tan Son Nhat Hotel in Phu Nhuan District reported being fully booked from April 15 to May 20. Hotel representatives noted that most reservations were made in mid-March by tour groups and individual guests booking via online platforms.

Nguyen Tran Phuong Uyen, a hotel sales consultant with over 10 years of experience, observed that before the pandemic, travelers typically preferred vacationing away from urban areas. However, an increasing number of people, especially younger travelers, now choose city breaks. The many planned events for the April 30 holiday have significantly driven up demand for accommodation in HCMC.

LGBTQ+ travellers forgo trips to the US as gender rules on passports change

Several European countries have revised their travel guidance for citizens planning trips to the United States, with specific new advisories for transgender and non-binary travellers.

It comes after President Donald Trump initiated policies in January establishing federal recognition of only two biological sexes - male and female. For LGBTQ+ travellers, it compounds concerns about visiting the US, where local state laws and social climates can already create distressing situations.

On top of this, an executive order issued by Trump involving tighter border security, stricter visa screening and an immigration crackdown alongside a general souring of the US’s relationship with Europe has many European tourists rethinking travel to the US.

LGBTQ+ travellers fear detention at US borders

Trump’s new policies have created uncertainty - especially for transgender and non-binary travellers, as US immigration authorities may now require documentation showing their ‘sex at birth’.

It means that individuals whose legal gender markers on official documents such as passports, visas or visa waivers don't match their birth sex - or who have ‘X’ gender markers rather than ‘M’ or ‘F’ - could face challenges when attempting to enter the US .

The situation has raised particular concerns about the possibility of being detained at the border for those whose documentation doesn't align with the new US requirements.

Travellers should be prepared to answer routine questions from immigration officers about the purpose of their visit, the duration of their stay, and where they plan to stay. Officials may take visitors for a second round of questioning, which is longer and more detailed.

Dozens of European countries issue US travel warnings

Due to the new policies, multiple European nations have announced updated regulations. travel advisories in the last few months.

Denmark and Germany recommend those with X gender markers on their passport or who have changed gender to contact the US embassy before travelling.

Finland warns that US authorities may deny travel permits if a traveller’s passport gender doesn't match their birth gender.

Ireland cautions that US visa waiver forms require declaring ‘biological sex at birth’ and recommends contacting the US Embassy for specific requirements.

The Netherlands states that gender at birth must be indicated when applying for ESTA or a visa and notes that some US states have laws with "negative consequences for LGBTIQ+ people".

Portugal, Finland, Germany and a handful of other European nations have also emphasised that having proper documentation - like a visa or visa waiver - doesn't guarantee entry after some European travellers experienced problems at the border.

Cases like that of three German nationals who were denied entry and detained as they tried to enter the US in March have prompted these reminders.

They have cautioned that final choices ultimately belong to border agents.

Travelers from Europe are becoming more hesitant about visiting the United States.

In 2023, according to EU data, Europeans forked out approximately $155 billion (€141 billion) for visits to the United States.

However, concerns about entrance rules, increased immigration enforcement, and tougher visa checks since Donald Trump took office have led to a significant drop in the number of international visitors coming to the nation.

Preliminary data from the US National Travel and Tourism Office shows that the number of visitors to the US from Western Europe dropped by 1 per cent year on year in February compared to a 14 per cent year on year increase during the same month last year.

French hotel group Accor SA has reported a 25 per cent drop in bookings from Europe to the US for this summer.

LGBTQ+ travel agencies say inquiries from their customers reflect this growing apprehension, too.

Darren Burn, CEO of luxury LGBTQ+ travel agency Out of Office, says they have seen “a noticeable increase in our LGBTQ+ clients expressing concerns about travel to the US.”

“These queries often relate to safety in public spaces, legal protections, and how they may be treated at borders or hotels,” he adds.

The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) has also seen a rise in concerns from LGBTQ+ travelers.

President John Tanzella says, “these concerns are completely valid”.

“Many travelers are worried about access to gender-affirming care, border security, passport gender markers, and overall safety - particularly in states where anti-LGBTQ+ policies have been enacted,” he adds.

Advice for LGBTQ+ travellers on visiting the US

Travellers with concerns about visiting the US can get in touch with IGLTA’s Diversity in Gender Travel Advisory Team (GTAG).

The volunteer-driven team comprising prominent figures from across the globe is dedicated to "guaranteeing that transgender and gender-diverse travelers can journey freely, securely, and with respect."

GTAG recently hosted a webinar discussing the challenges trans travellers face and offering actionable steps for businesses to continue supporting LGBTQ+ visitors amid uncertainty.

Travel agency Out of Office also says it can provide personalised advice for travellers and adjust itineraries to prioritise destinations where clients will feel most comfortable.

Lately, many unique phenomena have once again captured public attention.

Tafsiran Para Ahli Agama Mengenai Pasal Wajib Umrah

Referensi: Badai'us Shana'i', jilid 2, halaman 121.

Perspektif Para Ahli Agama Tentang Perjalanan Haji Dengan Berjalan Kaki

Wallahu a‘lam bish shawab.

Walton Goggins Calls "The White Lotus" a 'Lonely, Lonely Experience'

If you spot Walton Goggins In a Dubai airport lounge late at night, feel free to initiate a chat. Really—others will appreciate your approach.

"I really enjoy that sort of stuff, you understand?" Goggins says. The National I have likely passed through Dubai around five times, enjoying a cappuccino at the lounge past midnight multiple occasions. It’s where I engaged in numerous delightful discussions within those walls. There’s something special about connecting with others.

The sole challenge might be persuading Goggins to discuss his personal life. As an actor, he seems quite humble. "I make sure I'm not at the center of everything," explains Goggins. "Everything moves in cycles—everyone has a bit of self-absorption since each one acts like they're the main character in their narrative—but when you manage to look beyond this and recognize that your existence isn’t central, that brings immense happiness and fosters growth."

This is precisely why he can vanish seamlessly into various distinctive roles. It's also due to this reason that it took the world many years to truly appreciate his exceptional talent. However, following years of blending unnoticed into popular shows and movies, the actor, now 53, is finally stepping into the spotlight.

His big moment arrived with the 2024 series. Fallout In this role, he portrayed a post-apocalyptic bounty hunter called the Ghoul. His captivating performance was impossible to overlook, leading to his first-ever lead actor Emmy nomination.

However, 2025 has propelled him into an entirely different realm. His role as Baby Billy in the show’s final season took things to new heights. The Righteous Gemstones is strikingly good. But as Rick Hatchett in HBO’s The White Lotus , airing weekly on OSN+ in the Middle East, he’s become water cooler fodder. The character, a tortured stoic in search of the man who killed his father, is singular but eminently relatable – layered, heartbreaking and funny – like all the best Goggins creations.

“I saw him as an interloper in this world,” Goggins says. “All of these wonderful characters are an extension of [creator] Mike White’s imagination and heart. I think he has all these people inside of him, except for maybe Rick. Rick is special to him.”

“I understood his isolation, his inability to be understood based on his own trauma. Right from the words on the page, I knew this was going to be a lonely, lonely experience.”

It wasn't only about being distant from his loved ones and his house for half a year during the filming. Thailand That led Goggins to experience such loneliness — it was the path he needed to embark upon to uncover his true character.

Goggins clarifies, "The distinction lies in being proficient versus truly grasping something thoroughly." He continues, "Reading what’s written is one aspect, yet comprehending the emotions—such as joy, sorrow, and suffering—that these writings embody is quite different. I have deep affection for the characters. Uncovering their true essence provides me with a sense of release."

Goggins tackles his career as an actor much like he does his life, with each aspect fueling the other. "This has always been the journey I've embarked upon," he muses. "From a tender age, my mom guided me towards probing into the world more profoundly—searching for significance and connections beneath what meets the eye. This quest is something I strive to uphold every day. What draws me most are individuals who share this same aspiration."

That search has been spiritual and intellectual. He’s a big fan of Herman Hesse’s book Siddhartha and he reads a lot of spiritual texts from authors like Thich Nhat Hanh, Paramahansa Yogananda, and Joel Goldsmith.

A particular phrase lingers in his thoughts. Although he cannot recall which book it came from, it goes like this: "It's better not to start at all. However, once you've started, it's best to complete it."

Goggins states: "There isn't an option for being in between. When you start a journey, you must complete it. Perhaps certain journeys never truly conclude, yet you should remain within that stream, striving to reach the endpoint. If you exit this stream momentarily, drying yourself with a towel, remember that the current keeps moving. Eventually, you will dive right back into it."

That has been my path as an individual, and that's one of the reasons why I was incredibly eager to embark on this journey alongside Mike White and this ensemble. White Lotus .

Goggins didn't always find acting as fulfilling as he does now. There was a particular instance when everything shifted for him. On the set of a film, he observed an actress discovering nuances that were new to him, which made all the difference.

He remembers, "She wasn’t merely excellent; she was absolutely relishing it." Adding, "I asked her, 'Why are you having such a great time? It’s driving me crazy.' She simply glanced at me, shared the contact details of one of her colleagues who teaches, and mentioned, 'Give him a call. He will transform your life.'"

And indeed, he transformed my life. He showed me that we often make things overly complicated. It's like a children's game, and one must set aside their ego to truly reflect nature. These thoughts come back to me each time I head to work. I believe my role is to capture the core essence of these individuals.

Time and time again, he has done just that. On shows such as The Shield , Sons of Anarchy , Justified and Vice Principals ; in movies such as Django Unchained , The Hateful Eight , and Lincoln – he’s disappeared into his roles so convincingly the praise was usually reserved for his more-showy scene partners. Each one felt three dimensional: hard to love, but impossible to hate.

“Something I think is true – something that was pointed out by journalists that I didn’t notice myself – is that so many of the characters that I've played are lonely people looking for connection,” Goggins continues.

“But to me, they’re just real people. I see them in my mind, but I see them in the world. They’re people who look like me; that talk like me. I just don’t know how that’s going to manifest itself until I have the clothes or the hair. But I understand them – from birth to death; to a life well lived. I see it. I feel it. There was a kinship with each of them.”

But The White Lotus This has turned out to be particularly unexpected. Individuals are connecting through social platforms. Buddies and people he knows are contacting him, expressing how closely they identify with Rick Hatchett.

So many of us bear wounds," states Goggins. "Everyone feels adrift only to discover they were actually astray. In this stage of his journey, Rick appears harsh and distant, yet that very quality resonates with people. There are moments when we all feel alone and misjudged. Each one of us carries personal scars, and these emotional burdens create shared experiences.

Goggins realizes that people notice his abilities differently now. However, after many years in his profession, he feels the timing for these opportunities could not be better.

Opportunities arise for me once I am prepared mentally and emotionally," he states. "This is definitely true at present, yet my approach remains constant. The satisfaction I get from it stays unchanged as well. My aim is to persist on this journey throughout each new phase of my life—ideally, with numerous chapters still ahead.

"The White Lotus" is currently available for streaming on OSN+ across the Middle East, with fresh episodes released every week.

Tourists from Russia, Cambodia, the Philippines, and China were identified as the main contributors to growth, showing rises ranging from 178% to 210%.

Increased consumer demand during the Lunar New Year holiday and the surge in international visitors to Vietnam contributed to significant growth in the service sector, according to the General Statistics Office.

Industry experts have noted that inbound tourism is seeing significant growth, with visitor counts exceeding those from 2019—the pinnacle year for Vietnamese tourism.

If the growth rate continues, the aim of attracting between 22 and 23 million will be achieved. international visitors This year seems attainable, they mentioned.

The unprecedented influx of tourists in the initial three months can be largely credited to promotional efforts initiated by multiple governmental bodies, more lenient visa regulations aimed at attracting new markets, and Vietnam emerging as an affordable getaway option amidst worldwide financial constraints, when individuals are increasingly cautious with their travel expenditures.

Crypto Tap-to-Pay: The Future of Travel in 2025

Traveling has consistently been thrilling, yet handling finances across various nations was previously quite cumbersome. Switching from Bitcoin to US dollars prior to journeys and subsequently converting those dollars back into local currencies was once both intricate and tedious.

By 2025, cryptocurrency payment systems have revolutionized international financial transactions, simplifying travel budgeting and enhancing convenience for travelers. These systems facilitate instant currency exchanges at competitive market rates.

The Development of Travel Payments

Prior to the widespread adoption of cryptocurrency for travel, tourists frequently managed various payment options —cash in local currency, credit cards charging hefty foreign transaction fees, and prepaid travel cards requiring frequent top-ups. These choices each came with their own issues: cash risked being lost or stolen, card payments sometimes got rejected, and keeping tabs on expenditures denominated in several currencies proved cumbersome.

By 2025, integrated cryptocurrency payment systems have tackled numerous obstacles. Now, travelers can utilize digital wallets linked to major payment networks, enabling direct payments using cryptocurrencies or automatic conversion into local currencies at the time of purchase.

How Today's System Works

The present cryptocurrency travel payment system comprises various interlinked components functioning cohesively:

Most travelers nowadays utilize multifunctional digital wallets designed for multiple currencies. These wallets can hold different types of cryptocurrencies and typically sync with smartphones and smartwatches, facilitating easy contactless transactions through a quick tap.

Currency Rate Security: Contemporary travel cryptocurrency applications allow users to secure advantageous exchange rates for their intended locations prior to leaving home. This aids travelers in planning their budgets precisely, eliminating concerns over unexpected changes in currency values.

Cryptocurrency Payment Systems: Leading cryptocurrency payment networks have expanded worldwide through partnerships, ensuring they are accepted at accommodations like hotels, eateries such as restaurants, travel services including transportation, and various points of interest in most popular tourism spots.

Expense Monitoring: The system automates expenditure tracking by sorting expenses into categories and gives instant feedback on whether travelers are adhering to their set budget plans.

Offline Functionality: Many cryptocurrency payment systems currently provide offline transaction options, enabling basic buying even in regions with restricted online access.

Benefits for Careful Travelers

The transition to cryptocurrency has not led to reckless spending; instead, it has had the contrary effect. These novel systems come equipped with mechanisms that assist travelers in keeping their finances under control.

Expenditure Caps: Individuals have the option to establish daily or weekly expenditure limits aimed at curbing spontaneous buying behaviors outside of their predefined financial plan.

Category budgets enable digital wallet users to assign particular sums for various components of their trip such as lodging, meals, experiences, and keepsakes, complete with notifications when they near these spending caps.

Shared Wallets for Group Expenses: These tools simplify cost-sharing among travel companions like friends or relatives, making joint trips easier by eliminating the previous hassle of uneven financial splits.

Real-Time Currency Conversion View: During transactions, travelers can view both the cryptocurrency amount and its corresponding value in their local currency, enhancing understanding of their expenditures.

Security Improvements

The cryptocurrency travel systems of 2025 have tackled earlier security issues via multiple advancements:

Biometric Authentication: Transactions demand either a fingerprint or facial scan, which makes unauthorized payments extremely unlikely, even if your device gets misplaced or taken.

Many cryptocurrency travel platforms now offer transaction insurance to protect against fraud or technical issues, ensuring tranquility for travelers.

Emergency Backup Access: Designated contacts can assist in regaining fund accessibility if primary devices are misplaced, preventing travelers from being left resourceless when out of their home country.

Selective Data Disclosure: The privacy functions enable travelers to manage which details merchants obtain during exchanges, thereby decreasing exposure of sensitive information.

Practical Usage Examples

The straightforward nature of contemporary cryptocurrency transactions for travel expenses becomes evident in daily situations:

Upon reaching a new location, travelers now have no need to seek out currency exchange booths or ATMs. Transport services from the airport can be easily covered with just a tap of your wristwatch or smartphone.

Street markets and small vendors that previously accepted only local currency now frequently show QR codes for cryptocurrency transactions, simplifying impromptu buying experiences.

Dividing a restaurant check among traveling buddies occurs seamlessly via group wallet functions, where everyone’s contribution is computed and withdrawn immediately.

Hotel deposits are managed using temporary holds instead of immediate charges, which makes the funds that were once unavailable until check-out now accessible.

Challenges and Considerations

Even with notable advancements, cryptocurrency-based travel payments still come with various concerns: 1. Volatility of crypto values can affect transaction outcomes. 2. Regulatory uncertainties pose potential risks for both travelers and merchants. 3. Widespread acceptance remains limited compared to traditional payment methods. These factors mean that while progress has been made, challenges persist in integrating cryptocurrencies fully into travel payments.

Although some far-off places still exhibit restricted adoption, this discrepancy keeps shrinking as worldwide infrastructure develops further.

For new users, there is an initial learning period; however, simpler user interfaces have significantly eased the first steps compared to earlier years.

While battery reliance continues to be an issue, power banks and fast-charging options have turned into typical travel essentials.

A Balanced Perspective

Although cryptocurrency has made travel payments easier, it hasn't altered the significance of prudent expenditure. This tech offers improved resources for making well-informed choices and adhering to planned budgets.

In 2025, for travelers, the main benefit isn't about having extra money to spend; instead, it's about being free from financial worries and bureaucratic hurdles that used to complicate global expeditions.

By eliminating these obstacles, integrating cryptocurrency payments enables individuals to concentrate on what truly counts — exploring new destinations, immersing themselves in different cultures, and making meaningful connections without constantly fretting over financial logistics.
