Team GB Star Alerts: Fat-Burning Drugs Like Ozempic May Unleash Ancient Disease

A British Olympic athlete has cautioned that the increase in weight loss Jabs might lead to a resurgence of scurvy epidemics.

The former speed skater Sarah Lindsay, who is 44 years old, thinks that medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro might lead users to become malnourished and lacking in vitamins.

The well-known celebrity personal trainer, who counts among his clients Piers Morgan , Ellie Goulding , Matt Healy and Christine Lampard has disclosed that certain individuals misuse medications.

She worries that the growing popularity of weight-loss injections might result in a resurgence of scurvy. This condition arises due to insufficient Vitamin C intake from fruits and veggies, which is crucial for maintaining the health of your skin, blood vessels, and connective tissues.

Over two million seafarers, who primarily subsisted on preserved food with scarce access to fruits and veggies, perished from this ailment during the period spanning the 16th to the 18th century.

Sarah acknowledged that individuals with specific medical issues might gain advantages from using GLP-1 medications, also referred to as "jabs."

However, she told the Sun :The extent of such abuse nowadays is widespread — individuals who are already slim desiring to be even more slender.

I've had clients seek physical therapy consultations when they're desperately trying to climb out of the rut they’re in: feeling weakened, exhausted, suffering from poor digestion, and experiencing significant hair loss.

Her primary two worries regarding the injections are 'muscle atrophy' and 'the long-term impacts of nutrient deficiency'.

She cautioned that the vaccines might lead to people feeling unwell or potentially trigger a resurgence of deficiencies such as scurvy.

Weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are all injectable GLP-1 receptor agonists, and they function by mimicking a hormone produced in the body that manages how quickly food is processed within the digestive tract - decelerating this process. This diminishes hunger and aids individuals in consuming smaller portions.

Earlier this week, Dr Ben Bickman, a scientist and professor at Brigham Young University in Utah, warned of three harmful consequences of these medications that he believes many are unaware of.

First off, he told the Mail he is concerned about pervasive weakness resulting from severe loss of muscle and bone density associated with these medications.

In a 68-week clinical study of semaglutide—the key component in both Ozempic and Wegovy—participants shed an average of 23 pounds of body weight. Additionally, they experienced various other effects. noticed a reduction of 15 pounds in lean muscle mass.

This point is considerably more subjective, but Dr Bickman thinks Ozempic might cause individuals to become 'mentally vulnerable'.

He highlights anecdotal evidence from patients who say that Ozempic not only blunted not only their desire for nourishment but also for various enjoyments in life like intimacy, spirits, caffeine, and more. .

Up next, Dr. Bickman suggests that over time, weight-loss medications might end up making individuals more overweight than when they started.

He explains how individuals may eventually gain back weight after using Ozempic for some time, stating: "Ozempic effectively curbs hunger... Nonetheless, its effectiveness wanes over time."

Around two years into usage, individuals notice that their desire for sweets returns to a typical level.

'Notably, this is also around the time when numerous individuals choose to discontinue the medication, with approximately 70 percent ceasing use after two years.'

Even though he has reservations about the side effects of Ozempic and similar weight-loss medications, Dr Bickman emphasizes that he isn’t opposed to their use; rather, his main worry lies with how they are prescribed.

People who have type 2 diabetes use Ozempic weekly as an adult to reduce their blood glucose levels, typically starting with a dosage of 0.25 mg.

This reduced dosage enables the body to adjust to the medication.

In Week Five, physicians generally boost the dosage to 0.5 mg once per week provided the patient handles the medication well.

Patients focusing on weight loss usually adhere to the standard dosage regimen, though their dose could be raised up to 2 mg per week.

US-Based Alumni Organize Medical Outreach Mission

LAGOS – Over the weekend, The Orthopedic Hospital in Igbobi, Lagos State buzzed with activity as numerous individuals received complimentary medical care thanks to a U.S.-based chapter of the Kegites Club known as the Universal Archivar Elders.

The collective put together a team consisting of six physicians, twenty-one nurses, and five skilled counselors to administer medical care and distribute complimentary medications that were imported into the nation from the U.S.

This initiative was not just a reaction to the increasing demand for available medical care; it was also a strong statement that when empathy is structured, it has the power to mend both physical health and emotional well-being.

The initiative aimed to provide essential medical care to underprivileged members of the Kegites Club as well as people in the Lagos community.

Starting as early as dawn, crowds comprising several hundred people assembled eagerly, with numerous attendees hoping for solutions to their neglected health issues. Throughout the day, more than 1,000 recipients benefited from various healthcare provisions at the event. These included basic medical advice, prescription medications dispensed, assessments of blood glucose and hypertension levels, vision tests, and examinations aimed at detecting cervical cancers, along with individualized guidance sessions.

Their unwavering dedication guaranteed that every patient received care marked by professionalism, compassion, and dignity.

A deeply moving moment occurred when an older lady, struggling with vision problems for many years, got her eyes checked. Following the examination, she was provided with a new pair of reading glasses which caused her to shed tears as she exclaimed, "It’s been five years since I saw things so clearly. May God bless each one of you." This incident served as a poignant reminder that even minor assistance can bring about significant changes.

The event was attended by Chief Kamal Baiyewu, Chairman of the Lagos State Local Government Commission, as well as Chief Edward Alo, who serves as the President of the Rotary Club of Abeokuta. Both individuals are also part of the Kegites Club.

Among those present were former leaders of the student chapter of the Club, including Chiefs Femi Oyafemi (1982), Olumide Oniyire SAN (1989), Olaoti Dester Adeyemi (1994), and Atesebi Oluwole Fidelis (1986). Also in attendance was Chief Irapada, known as the Otun Bashorun of the Egbe Agba Elemu, along with several others. The gathering also featured the current World Chief Ogunlade Prosper Oluwasogo alongside his national counterpart, Oluwapelumi Abiona.

"Indeed, the day presented several challenges. Coordinating for such a massive gathering within confined areas and constrained resources demanded quick teamwork and immediate issue resolution," stated Bashorun Fayth Deleola Daramola, who leads the organization.

He added: “The dedication and teamwork of our volunteers ensured that the event ran smoothly. The counselors played a key role in guiding anxious patients and helping those with critical conditions receive referrals for specialized follow-up care.”

Deleola further noted: “At the heart of this outreach was not just the medical care provided, but the sense of dignity restored to each individual who came through. Many left not only with free medications in hand but with renewed hope and knowledge to better manage their health conditions.

Expressing his contentment with the exercise, Daramola stated: "Today's event serves as a source of pride for the Kegites community because it has enabled us to reshape how people perceive the Kegites—from being just entertainment-focused to becoming socially accountable organizations akin to groups like the Rotary Club and the Lions Club."

Following the success of the day, Daramola shared his intentions for future similar events. He expressed, "Reflecting upon the joy, comfort, and heartfelt thanks we observed, it becomes clear that this is merely the start. More remains to be accomplished, and we stand prepared." Chief Oyafemi also conveyed immense enthusiasm regarding the outcome, stating, "Our sincere respect for the honor received. We express profound gratitude to God for the program’s triumph and acknowledge the dedication shown by those behind its organization. This pioneering effort sets an example of how the club can venture into new territories beyond traditional activities like dancing. May God bestow abundant blessings upon each participant and enrich their resources accordingly.” Based abroad in Canada, Chief Sorinmade echoed comparable sentiments over the event's achievement. He commented, "A hearty congratulations! Indeed, crossing ‘the Rubicon’ marks a significant milestone with irreversible implications forward." Further elaborating under the well-known title 'Chief Gboziah The Jew', he continued, "It would behoove us to implore divine intervention for exponential growth within our ranks. Such initiatives serve as benchmarks against which others must measure themselves. Let us celebrate this remarkable accomplishment and recognize it as divinely ordained—a truly awe-inspiring feat worthy of acknowledgment."

Chief Dester stated: "I was delighted to participate in this commendable initiative. I extend my best wishes to the Universal Archaivar Elders for their upcoming ventures as they work towards enhancing the global reputation of the club! This program was remarkable!!! May God bless you abundantly."

Healthcare Crisis: Unveiling the Challenges Facing Medical Staff

Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian polymath, was one of the earliest thinkers to conceive the notion of a flying apparatus through his design of a 'flying machine.' Although this particular invention didn’t function as intended, it marked the start of modern aviation. Interestingly, one of his other concepts evolved over time into the widely used helicopters seen today. Prior to Leonardo's groundbreaking ideas and before the Wright brothers—Orville and Wilbur—who attempted their inaugural flight on December 17, 1903, numerous individuals had also undertaken unsuccessful endeavors in crafting functional airborne vehicles.

As humanity has claimed mastery over the skies, numerous air crashes and incidents have taken place and will likely persist. Indeed, the worst aviation tragedy in recorded history unfolded on March 27, 1977, when a KLM Boeing 747 trying to take off crashed into another taxiing Pan Am Boeing 747 at Los Rodeos Airport on Tenerife’s Canary Islands, resulting in the tragic deaths of all 538 people aboard both planes.

In aviation mishaps and events, pilot error reportedly makes up 53 percent, whereas mechanical failures and adverse weather conditions contribute 21 percent and 11 percent each.

Similar to how aviation remains one of the safest modes of travel despite occasional incidents, Nigeria’s healthcare system also faces significant challenges. Doctor errors have resulted in numerous deaths and cases of permanent disability among Nigerians.

On New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1983, the military regime led by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari ousted President Shehu Shagari's administration at Dodan Barracks in Obalende, Lagos. In his inaugural address as head of state, Buhari criticized the "incompetent" Shagari government for transforming public hospitals into nothing better than walk-in clinics. Sadly, over four decades later, this issue persists; today, whether they're publicly run or privately owned, these medical facilities have regressed further. Instead of being mere consultation centers, they've become places akin to abattoirs with numerous physicians acting almost as executioners. These healthcare providers often resemble automobile repair technicians who rely heavily on guesswork rather than precise diagnosis techniques to identify issues within patients' bodies.

From instances of infant switching at numerous hospitals—both public and private—to cases of blatant kidnapping, inexplicable vanishings, misdiagnoses, as well as the mutilation of patients with subsequent theft or removal of organs such as kidneys and intestines, some Nigerian doctors have become akin to Riva de Biasio—a grotesque, disfigured serial killer from Venice, California, USA. This notorious figure was known for his gruesome murders and mutilations of young women and children in open settings. His horrific acts were chronicled in the renowned book "The Butcher of Venice" authored by Irmgard Rawn.

Some patients and their caregivers may have such poor attitudes that they believe you will end up regretting seeking treatment with them.

Even though we were in this dire situation, many of our doctors remained highly skilled, thorough, and remarkably precise in performing their responsibilities.

The blatant incompetence and deceit exhibited by culpable medical professionals in Nigeria’s healthcare system didn’t begin recently. Roughly three decades back, a close friend who worked as a seasoned photojournalist recounted to me how his spouse firmly believed their newborn had been switched post-delivery at the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital. She claimed she distinctly remembered giving birth to a girl, yet upon regaining consciousness, found herself with a male infant instead. Such unethical practices continue unchecked across numerous facilities in the nation. It comes as little surprise then that we've witnessed a dramatic rise in paternity disputes throughout the country.

Moreover, numerous medical professionals and patients experience similar issues; for example, the esteemed Lagos-based lawyer and human rights advocate, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), passed away on September 5, 2009, following an extended struggle with lung cancer. Initially, he was incorrectly diagnosed with a simple sore throat and cough in Nigeria but received the correct diagnosis of advanced lung cancer overseas when treatment options were limited due to extensive metastasis throughout his body. Unfortunately, countless comparable instances occur every day across the nation without ever being documented.

A significant number of Nigerian citizens have lost their lives, and continue to do so, on surgical tables within medical facilities across the country. According to reports, May Ellen Mofe-Damijo (MEE), who worked as both a journalist and the publisher of Classique magazine, succumbed to complications during what turned out to be unsuccessful uterine fibroid surgery at Providence Hospital in Surulere, Lagos, back on March 23, 1996; she was only 30 years old at the time. Additionally, Wale Aboderin, known for his role as chairman of Punch Newspapers Limited, apparently met with fatal circumstances when he underwent cardiac procedures at the First Cardiology Consultants clinic located in Ikoyi, Lagos, on May 30, 2018. More recently, shortly before passing away, Waheed Ayilara—who held the position of Police Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State—also tragically died due to issues encountered during prostate surgery performed at LASUTH, which stands for Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Were it not for divine intervention, Yusuf Olaniyonu, a former Information Commissioner of Ogun State and also a journalist, might have passed away much earlier following multiple surgeries for prostate issues at the National Hospital in Abuja. After being abandoned in one of the ward rooms with little hope of survival, he was eventually rescued when taken to a facility in Cairo, Egypt. Many of our fellow citizens do not enjoy such advantages. The situation involving Akin Bright, a 13-year-old boy who reportedly lost part of his intestines during transfers from a private clinic called Obitoks to LASUTH, culminated tragically on September 19, 2023, as the young lad succumbed to his condition.

As I pen this down, my heart is deeply wounded since one of my wife’s nieces, an entirely orphaned girl, lies motionless in a morgue in Imo State. Two hospitals were unable to save either her life or that of her newborn during and post-delivery. This dual loss of both the child and the mother is overwhelmingly painful for all of us. It seems endless when we consider the numerous dire situations within our healthcare facilities, which highlight our powerlessness and despair.

To avoid unnecessary medical travel and address this issue effectively, federal and state authorities ought to upgrade all university teaching hospitals so they can handle modern healthcare challenges and align themselves with advanced technological advancements seen in more developed nations. The era where members of the Saudi royal family frequently sought treatment at facilities such as our very own University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan—a hospital that has since fallen from grace—should not persist. It’s time these institutions stop facing issues like power supply disruptions due to unpaid bills, unlike what we see in some teaching hospitals today.

Additionally, both the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and the country’s universities should reassess the medical school curriculums. This is necessary because certain training methodologies used to educate physicians do not align with present-day standards.

Every time a report of negligence involves any physician or healthcare provider, both the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and related oversight organizations are obligated to look into these cases thoroughly. If guilt is established, disciplinary actions should be taken against the offending professional. The insufficient responsiveness from entities like the MDCN has led relatives of deceased patients to resort to taking matters into their own hands, sometimes resulting in violent attacks on doctors and nurses—particularly when they firmly believe that neglect was responsible for their family members' deaths. As a collective effort, we must restore our failing healthcare system to safeguard our well-being.

Drug Giant Accused of Concealing Zantac's Cancer Link, Lawsuit Alleges

The British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has faced accusations of concealing a study purportedly demonstrating a connection between its drug Zantac and cancer A fresh lawsuit has been filed, according to reports.

A pension fund has initiated a class-action lawsuit against the company in the United States, accusing GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and three top officials, including CEO Emma Walmsley, of deceiving shareholders by stating they were unaware of any link between their heartburn drug Zantac and cancer risks.

Zantac hit the market in the UK in 1981, and by 1988, it had become the globe’s quickest-selling medication.

However, in 2019, GSK removed it from the market in both the UK and the US due to concerns that ranitidine, an ingredient within it, formed a potentially cancer-causing chemical when mixed with nitrates, commonly present in various food items.

In the United States, tens of thousands of individuals pursued compensation. At that time, GSK stated that the prevailing scientific opinion was that there was 'no consistent or reliable evidence suggesting that ranitidine raises the risk of ... cancer'.

In October, GSK stated that they had incurred $2.2 billion in expenses to settle 93 percent of the cases without acknowledging fault.

However, in a legal case submitted to the US district court in Pennsylvania The Roofers Local No. 149 Pension Fund claimed that GSK knew about the connection between Zantac and cancer for approximately 40 years prior to removing the drug from the market.

Legal papers assert that in 1982, Richard Tanner, who was a researcher at Glaxo—a company that later became part of GSK—discovered that when ranitidine came into contact with nitrites, it generated approximately 232,000 nanograms of NDMA, which is a cancer-causing substance.

Subsequently, the American pharmaceutical regulatory authority declared that a drug should contain no more than 96 nanograms as acceptable levels.

The allegation asserts that Glaxo and GSK concealed the report, resulting in 'financial damage' for investors as GSK's stock value declined due to the legal proceedings.

GSK stated: "We're currently examining this legal case."

Since 2019, after reviewing 16 epidemiological studies examining human data related to the use of ranitidine, the scientific community has concluded that there is no consistent or dependable evidence suggesting that ranitidine raises the risk of developing any form of cancer.

After the initial Zantac personal injury lawsuit was filed in 2019, we reported the associated legal actions concerning Zantac as a possible risk factor and maintained regular communication with our shareholders.

Hey AI, What Bit Me? Tech Saves Lives in Lethal Snakebite Crisis

On the scorched plains of Mayen Abun-Twic County in South Sudan, Apuk Bak rests on a hand-woven mat beside her home, gently touching the scars on her leg—an enduring mark of a brutal encounter with a poisonous serpent. She gazes towards the distant landscape, reminiscing about the moment the snake attacked. At just seven years old, Apuk was tending to her parent's livestock when a black mamba sank its fangs into her flesh. The venom surged swiftly throughout her body, rendering her senseless and forever impaired. Her household lacked appropriate medical assistance and resorted instead to conventional cures—such as uncooked eggs and herbal concoctions—that proved futile against the toxin’s ravages. "My kin offered me an unboiled egg along with certain plants they believed might purge my blood," recounts Apuk. "But soon afterward, swelling consumed my limbs; mobility became impossible. Eventually, darkness claimed me." Even today, at seventy-six, Apuk carries both bodily and emotional remnants from that calamitous event. "This condition impacts every aspect of who I am—it restricts movement and tasks requiring strength," she reflects sadly. "It feels almost as though time advances relentlessly due to this incident involving the viper. Had suitable antidote been available during those critical moments, perhaps things would differ greatly now." Such narratives aren't uncommon within Mayen Abun; stories related to encounters with serpents frequently interlace families' oral traditions much like intricate patterns formed by threadwork. Throughout Southern Sudan, peril lurks covertly among dense foliage where various lethal varieties cohabit—their venoms acting stealthily beneath skin layers causing untold misery amongst local inhabitants spanning multiple generations. Venomous strikes predominantly strike poorer sections located far away from adequate health services in regions including southern parts of Kenya and South Sudan itself, resulting in countless fatalities alongside irreversible handicaps. Climatic events coupled with ongoing conflicts compound issues faced locally since flooding compels reptilian residents toward residential zones occupied by humans seeking shelter.

Can We Really "Delay" Aging? The Secrets of Getting Older

It's an undeniable truth that most of us shy away from: each moment that passes, we're all growing older. This can be frightening. However, it doesn't have to be.

"Living as humans and experiencing life is all about transformation, and that’s essentially what aging represents—it’s change occurring over time," explains Professor Julie Byles, a social gerontologist and researcher from Newcastle University.

Aging is an inherent part of life for all living beings on Earth, yet the manner in which we age and the elements that affect this process are intricate and hard to predict.

"Ageing is widespread yet inconsistent; it occurs across all cells and species universally, however, our experiences of ageing vary significantly," explains Professor Byles.

Australia boasts one of the longest life expectancies, placing ninth amongst OECD nations following Switzerland, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Japan, Sweden, Israel, and Spain.

A person born in Australia in 2019 could likely reach around 83 years of age, which is approximately 34 years more than those born in the 1880s (the life expectancy in Japan currently stands at slightly above 84 years). At present, roughly one out of every seven Australians is aged 65 or older. However, this ratio will shift so that by 2057, nearly one individual among four would fall into this category.

According to the World Health Organization, possessing good health extends one’s lifespan, thereby providing chances to explore new hobbies, revisit old passions, or perhaps embark on an entirely different professional path.

We might find ourselves better equipped to ensure these additional years are both satisfying and purposeful if we grasp how aging unfolds—a continuous journey rather than a sudden change triggered in our 60s—according to Peter Lange, a clinical associate professor at the University of Melbourne who specialises in geriatrics. "Many hold pessimistic views towards aging and assume illness is unavoidable; they envision ending up in a care facility or suffering from dementia," he explains. "This belief isn’t accurate, yet by anticipating this outcome, individuals often fail to act proactively against such possibilities."

Is it possible to decelerate aging? What triggers this process? Moreover, how can ageism act as a type of self-sabotage?

What is the usual process of aging?

Once individuals typically begin noticing the impacts, they are usually around 30 years old or older. , The origins of aging begin just as we do.

"It occurs throughout your entire life. It begins even before you're born, right from the initial cell division," explains Byles. This is due to the progressive buildup of issues, which start with minor mistakes during DNA transcription from the very outset.

Our mental capabilities reach their highest point around age 20. Indeed, many of our bodily functions are believed to hit their peak during the period from 18 to 30 years old, according to Leon Flicker, a professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Western Australia. "It appears this is when the aging process begins to take effect," he explains, "and then follows a gradual decrease."

Aging isn’t predetermined, even as we navigate our lives, we encounter minor damages – these can stem from exposure to sunlight, bacterial infections, twisting an ankle, faulty DNA replication, or poor nutrition – and subsequently, our bodies strive to mend them.

“It occurs during each and every moment of our lives,” Flicker states.

However, as time passes, our bodily resources deplete, leaving us with an accumulation of harm that our system slowly fails to repair effectively—manifesting in various forms.

The interesting aspect of getting older is that it influences all bodily systems, with various parts being affected uniquely. Each 80-year-old person will differ.

The alterations we undergo with aging are not straightforward or uniform, and there is remarkable diversity among elderly individuals.

"The interesting aspect of getting older is that it impacts all bodily systems, but various parts experience differing effects. Each individual at 80 years old can differ significantly," explains Dr Kate Gregorevic, a geriatrician from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and an author. Living Well: The Science Behind Longevity, Happiness, and Better Health

There are Certain signs of aging manifest at a molecular and cellular level. As Gregorevic points out, this includes accumulating damage within our DNA. A key aspect of this process occurs when our cells replicate; the protective caps located at the extremities of our chromosomes—referred to as telomeres, akin to the plastic tips on shoelaces—gradually wear down over time. This degradation impacts our capacity for accurate DNA replication.

If DNA gets damaged, an increasing number of cells may eventually perish or turn into cancerous ones. Additionally, many cells transform into so-called senescent cells—cells that cease reproducing. While this process helps prevent tumors from forming, those non-dividing senescent cells occupy valuable space without providing benefits; instead, they trigger inflammation and overly stimulate the immune response, overwhelming the body's ability to clear them out effectively.

According to Lange, then come the alterations we frequently observe starting around our 40s: our skin becomes less elastic; our hair grays due to the gradual loss of pigment cells within our hair follicles; our vision shifts towards farsightedness as eye lenses harden; and for some individuals, hearing may diminish.

Sarcopenia, which refers to muscle loss, is a common aspect of aging. A study found that muscle mass reduces by approximately 3 to 8 percent every ten years following the age of 30, with an accelerated decrease noted post-60. "As we get older, our muscles become weaker," explains Gregorevic, adding, "Specifically, we tend to lose fast-twitch muscle fibers—the type used during sprints or when quickly regaining balance after tripping over."

Simultaneously, bone density decreases while ligaments and joints become less flexible, making them more susceptible to injuries and slower to recover. We also frequently see deteriorating lung function. The cardiovascular system experiences alterations, accompanied by specific hormonal shifts, including an increase in cortisol levels (the stress hormone) as individuals grow older.

All these accumulating changes progressively heighten our susceptibility to illness or "insults" – like a slight tumble resulting in a broken bone – and ultimately result in frailty, which involves a depletion of physical reserves affecting nearly everyone by their ninth decade.

If you're frail," explains Gregorevic, "your body is struggling immensely even under ideal conditions to manage everyday activities. Therefore, catching a cold can completely deplete your energy reserves.

However, it's not all gloomy.

Is aging inevitably accompanied by illness?

A significant amount of misunderstanding exists regarding the subtle differences between the inherent mechanisms of aging and those of diseases. associated As we age, according to Lange, our cognitive functions provide a prime illustration. With the passage of time, as brain matter diminishes progressively, it’s typical for our mental processes to change—becoming more sluggish and less effective. However, experiencing complete memory loss or enduring severe decline isn’t inevitable; these are signs of dementia, which encompasses various disorders.

During the period from 2014 to 2015, nearly seventy-five percent of Australians who were 65 years old and above indicated they experienced good or very good health, as per data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. However, diseases tend to be more frequent among elderly individuals; in 2015, cancers along with heart conditions topped the list of widespread ailments, trailed closely by Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, persistent respiratory issues, and arthritis. These same illnesses also account for many fatalities.

Flicker states that cancer becomes more prevalent with aging largely due to the decreased ability of the body’s monitoring mechanism to identify and eliminate faulty cells. Similarly, we face an increased risk of diabetes, partially because our bodies become less effective at transforming glucose into energy and require greater amounts of insulin.

Nevertheless, although everybody's defenses weaken over time, not all of us are equally vulnerable to diseases. According to Lange, some individuals possess stronger natural protections from the start. Therefore, even though a person might suffer from conditions like high blood pressure and minor strokes — both factors associated with an increased risk of dementia — they might not inevitably succumb to some variant of the condition.

How does your past experiences influence the process of aging?

A mischievous phrase exists in gerontology, according to Byles: "If you want to age well, choose your parents wisely."

Starting off with minimal genetic flaws provides an excellent advantage from day one; additional factors like quality schooling, stable finances, and healthy meals during upbringing further bolster your advantages.

You might start off at a disadvantage due to your upbringing," Byles explains. "As you reach old age, being physically robust, possessing a healthy mind, receiving quality education, and maintaining a sturdy immune system contribute significantly... These factors allow you to manage even if you experience muscle weakness or general deterioration since you have numerous supporting elements.

According to the World Health Organisation, 25% of our aging process is attributed to genetic factors, with the remaining portion influenced by lifestyle choices and socio-economic conditions.

In 2015, over one-third (38 percent) of the health issues affecting elderly people in Australia could have been prevented, as reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Major factors included smoking, unhealthy eating habits, obesity, and hypertension.

The COVID-19 lockdowns, restricting exercise and social activities, highlighted the critical role of lifestyle choices in the aging process. According to Lange, the periods of confinement during Victoria’s lockdown significantly impaired the physical and mental capabilities of elderly individuals.

Several elements lie beyond our control.

Growing up in substandard accommodations, extreme deprivation, inadequate nourishment, along with numerous other factors; all these elements have led to our seniors experiencing ongoing health issues nowadays.

Socioeconomic disparity presents significant challenges. According to a 2020 study involving 5,000 British individuals, people with lower economic standing exhibited faster signs of aging. Researchers noted that wealthier individuals generally had greater access to amenities like parks and gyms along with intellectually enriching pursuits such as social groups and cultural events, factors that contribute positively to both their physical and cognitive capabilities. Conversely, those struggling financially often faced higher levels of stress, impacting overall wellbeing, and were typically subjected to increased exposure to environmental pollutants.

The difference in aging is evident in Australian government policies. Aged care service subsidies typically begin at age 65; however, Indigenous Australians, Torres Strait Islanders, and the homeless face greater risks of health problems and financial disparities, making them eligible starting at 50 years old (or as young as 45 if they are both Indigenous and homeless).

The life expectancy of Indigenous Australians is roughly eight years shorter compared to non-Indigenous Australians.

Aunty Geraldine Atkinson, a Bangerang woman and co-chair of the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria, states that additional efforts are necessary to promote healthy aging within Indigenous communities.

"Growing up in substandard housing, extreme poverty, and inadequate nutrition, along with many other factors, has led to our elders suffering from chronic health issues nowadays," she states.

Can we 'postpone' aging then?

A great deal of research is underway to discover a miraculous anti-aging pill; however, current evidence does not strongly support the effectiveness of supplements or medicines. Researchers are attempting to develop therapies aimed at elongating telomeres, as well as methods using drugs to eliminate senescent cells. gene editing with the hope these might decelerate aging.

Health professionals are closely monitoring ongoing clinical trials aimed at assessing the impact of the medication Metformin. Typically used to control blood sugar levels in diabetes patients, this drug appears to have wider applications across different ages. Previous studies indicated that individuals with diabetes using Metformin tended to live longer than those without diabetes who did not use the medication. Additionally, research showed that when administered to mice, the drug had anti-ageing properties; however, these benefits were observed only at lower doses as higher amounts proved harmful. Currently, the American Federation for Aging Research is investigating whether Metformin might also help in preventing heart disease, cancer, and dementia.

Nevertheless, every geriatrician will inform you that maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in consistent physical activity are essential for longevity. supporting Promoting healthy aging can lead to a longer lifespan. Additionally, engaging your brain may help reduce the risk of diseases, according to Gregorevic.

Just as with our muscles, if we don’t use them, we lose them—our brains work similarly," she explains. "One of the most effective ways to promote healthy aging is simply to continue trying new activities—not through formal brain training but by remaining involved in life, socializing, acquiring new abilities, and even picking up a foreign language.

It's always an appropriate time to begin. Byles advises individuals to initiate their plans for later life even while they're still young. She states, "Should you fail to take action by your 50s, then it becomes crucial to question oneself: 'What steps should I be taking next, and how can I safeguard my physical, social, and mental health?'". Implement modifications that ensure your continued well-being—so as to continue engaging in activities you love.

The appropriately titled Professor Norman Lazarus explained in his 2020 book why he believed that exercise, proper nutrition, and mental wellbeing form a "trinity." The Lazarus Plan: Aging Gracefully and Intelligently The doctor from King's College London decided to transform his way of life during his fifties. This transformation enabled him to excel as a competitive cyclist when he turned 66—a time in life where he anticipated struggling just to stand up from a chair or open jar lids. Now, at 86 years old, he continues cycling regularly, exercises at the gym, takes daily walks with his spouse, maintains a strict dietary regimen, and remains actively involved in teaching at the institution.

At each stage of life, I alter my behavior to make the most out of the physical capabilities I possess. Seeking eternal life isn't something I bother with.

Lazarus motivates individuals to acknowledge that getting older is inevitable, followed by altering their way of life – allowing them to genuinely relish the process of aging while maintaining their autonomy.

"At each stage of life, I alter my behavior to make the most out of the physical capabilities I possess. Seeking immortality isn’t something I’m interested in," he states.

The secret lies in focusing on activities you adore, ensuring you remain committed to them, he explains. Even though he and his spouse have shifted from multi-day treks to easier, less strenuous paths, they continue to cherish their shared moments. He goes as far as using the phrase "exercise deficiency disorders" to highlight just how crucial physical exertion can be.

A detailed research conducted in 2015 revealed that 26 prevalent conditions might benefit from physical activity, encompassing heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, weight issues, dementia, arthritis, bone density loss, and certain types of cancer.

The best anti-aging strategy available to us is exercise," Lange states. "It has positive impacts on virtually every aspect we've examined.

Working out enhances muscular power, equilibrium, skeletal mass, along with the functions of your immune system, heart, and lungs. It elevates spirits and aids neurological and vertebral well-being as well. Engaging socially through physical activities stimulates mental acuity; additionally, subjecting your body to mild challenges helps it adapt more effectively to minor disruptions.

Lange states that even a modest level of physical activity can have significant benefits, with strength training being especially crucial—this approach has been shown to dramatically improve mobility for bedridden individuals well into their eighties and nineties. He advocates incorporating spontaneous movements throughout the day: opt for carrying your groceries rather than using a cart, choose walking over driving, or engage in gardening tasks.

Despite having the most robust exercise, dietary, and social routines globally, you might still succumb to illness at an advanced age—or even earlier. "The grim truth remains that regardless of your actions, death is inevitable," Gregorevic states. He adds, "It’s possible to lead a flawless life yet still develop cancer. There are no guarantees."

That’s precisely why we should avoid judging individuals based on their health status as they age. As Byles highlights, those suffering from specific ailments like diabetes or lung diseases frequently face criticism. "While some conditions can indeed be avoided, others cannot. Partly because these issues develop over time due to prolonged exposure and numerous opportunities for problems to arise," she explains.

Why does ageism matter?

Flicker suggests that one reason individuals fail to recognize their own aging is due to the gradual nature of these transformations. People generally do not perceive themselves as evolving over time; their self-image remains firmly established.

Byles suggests, "I believe that everybody feels they're around 30 years old. There’s an internal perception of ourselves, making us feel younger overall, which is wonderful. However, this can sometimes lead to surprises."

She thinks that some of this can be attributed to our inherent ageism, where we consider youth to be more significant. Certainly, we reside in a society that idolizes young people.

The tolerance for lower quality services in aged care indicates a devaluation of elderly individuals' importance.

In Australia’s 2021 Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, Commissioner Lynelle Briggs highlighted that ageism was deeply ingrained within the country. "Accepting inferior services in aged care underscores a devaluation of elderly individuals' worth, along with preconceived notions and stereotypes regarding their abilities and potential, which amounts to ageism against them. Such attitudes must be altered," she stated.

Moreover, a comprehensive global survey conducted by the World Health Organisation involving over 83,000 individuals revealed that half of the participants exhibited ageist sentiments.

Gregorevic points out that one major tragedy of ageism is when individuals absorb these attitudes, leading them to form a adverse view towards their future older selves.

A typical instance of self-defeating behavior involves younger individuals who enjoy the sensation of exertion during workouts. In contrast, numerous older adults, uncertain about their abilities, interpret this as a sign that they ought to steer clear of physical activity, according to Lange. However, she emphasizes that such effort is precisely what constitutes exercise; it helps acclimate your body to demanding tasks. Consequently, when you face illness and require enhanced cardiovascular performance later on, your body will be better prepared for it.

It's crucial not to label everyone over 65 as old... The number sixty-five holds no special magic. It doesn't imply that suddenly they're all frail.

The notion that elderly individuals cannot effectively use technology is a misperception. Furthermore, Professor Linda Rosenman, who serves on the board of the Australian Association of Gerontology, points out that discussions around retirement age foster yet another myth. She states, "It's crucial not to label everyone over 65 as being old; rather, this is simply when they qualify for government assistance. This number isn't significant in itself—it doesn't imply that suddenly their health will decline."

Not every community in Australia experiences ageism.

"It doesn’t seem quite right, feels somewhat alien," remarks Aunty Geraldine, highlighting how Indigenous communities concentrate not on what is lost through aging but rather on the knowledge acquired over time. She believes this perspective is something the entire nation should take note of and adopt.

In Indigenous Australian cultures, an elder is acknowledged for their wisdom and continuous contributions to their community, never overlooked. These individuals are customarily addressed as "Aunty" or "Uncle."

We consistently honor and cherish our seniors, acknowledging their cultural leadership, respecting the tales they shared with us...and these narratives continue," explains Aunty Geraldine. "One becomes an Aunty not merely for one’s family line, but also for other young individuals.

It varies in other nations as well.

"When you're strolling through the parks in Beijing, you'll find them teeming with elderly individuals practicing Tai Chi or engaging in dance. It doesn’t feel like age is a barrier to participating," Byles explains.

Byles, a co-creator of the anti-ageism Every Age Counts campaign, suggests that individuals might be leading richer lives as they grow older.

“Aging is a significant personal and community achievement. We ought to welcome it,” she states.

What benefits do you accumulate as you get older?

Actually, we generally become more content as we get older, with studies indicating that elderly individuals often experience cheerier dispositions and exhibit fewer signs of depression and anxiety compared to their younger peers.

Byles suggests that this might be due to older individuals primarily engaging in activities that provide them with fulfillment. "As you get older, you can't participate in all the past activities... So, you tend to concentrate on things that hold greater significance for you," she explains.

You employ your mind to tackle issues all through your life... and every time you acquire a fresh approach, you can utilize it for different challenges, which embodies wisdom.

Moreover, she points out, we tend to worry less about others' opinions, which can be incredibly freeing. Additionally, there’s a feeling of satisfaction that arises as you gradually figure out how you and all the parts of your life align like puzzle pieces.

Individuals continue enhancing their lexicon even as they reach their 60s and 70s. Although cognitive processing speeds and short-term memory capacity tend to be highest during younger years, this does not mean that someone in their 20s possesses all the mental capabilities required to govern a nation.

Flicker explains that older individuals possess what is known as "crystallized intelligence." "Over your lifetime, you utilize your mind to tackle various challenges... And every time you acquire a new approach, you can employ it for different issues, which essentially constitutes wisdom," he adds.

Thinking about her personal journey, Rosenman views herself as having grown more patient and tolerant, and she appreciates the extra free time she has now.

You're no longer focused on climbing the slippery pole alone; instead, you're more inclined to guide and support others," she remarks. "In numerous aspects, life has become far more pleasurable compared to rushing off to work and managing your children... plus, having grandchildren is an enormous added joy.

Growing older is a significant personal and community achievement. We ought to welcome it.

What strategies can one use when facing the anxiety associated with approaching the end of their life?

Certainly, there is an existential dimension to getting older. "This can be rather challenging," Lange remarks. "I've encountered patients who have surpassed those around them—outliving not just their spouses and friends but occasionally even their offspring—and now face growing physical impairments and sensory restrictions."

However, according to Lange, most individuals eventually arrive at a stage where they cease fearing death.

“People usually accept it will come ... which is quite freeing.”

Lange promotes concentrating on aging gracefully instead of obsessing over the notion that growing older equates to nearing death—a concept that represents just a fleeting instant at the conclusion of an entire lifespan.

Flicker concurs: "I believe that over time, individuals come to understand that as long as they aren’t deceased, life ought to be experienced fully, and genuinely one should strive to relish being alive irrespective of whatever circumstances prevail."

It falls upon all of us to engage in conversations with one another to assist in reshaping how we perceive advanced age. The aged care royal commission report emphasized this point: "Each one of us has simple actions they can take to empower elderly individuals to lead as fulfilling lives as possible... We ought to motivate seniors to consider what brings them joy and encourage them to set daily or weekly aims or targets that provide direction."

Although numerous individuals fear ending up in a nursing home, the truth is that most Australians do not experience this. According to the same report, approximately 80 percent of Australians utilise an aged care service at some point before passing away; however, for the majority, this assistance comes in the form of support provided within their own homes.

"Nobody denies that recent years can be tough. It’s possible to face the loss of loved ones along with grappling with serious personal health issues, yet the overwhelming majority of individuals will remain healthy enough to live independently throughout much of their lives," Gregorevic explains.

We should keep in mind that life is limited, and oddly enough, this limitation is actually a precious gift.

Like all of us, Lazarus feels taken aback when he sees his older face in the mirror but says there isn’t any age that he wishes to be frozen in.

I'm uncertain about my current position. When I look at this elderly gentleman, I also see myself, yet... would I want to be 20 once more? Honestly, no," he states. "I cannot confine myself to any particular era since I have genuinely relished every moment.

People Speak Out: Constituents Rally Against Mike Johnson's Medicaid Cuts

Residents even from House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) strongly Republican congressional area are expressing their dissatisfaction with the Republicans' attempts to reduce financing for Medicaid.

NBC News reported Wednesday Rural residents in southwest Louisiana, which falls under Representative Johnson’s constituency, are urging the Speaker to make top priority a programme offering healthcare coverage for those with lower incomes. Reverend Leroy McClelland informed the network that due to various health problems, he relies heavily on support systems such as Medicaid and food assistance programmes. Both of these would be reduced as per the Republicans' budget plan. —to earn enough money.

McClelland stated, “People simply cannot live without this.” He further advised Congress, saying, “[...] Support us. Individuals are suffering out here. Even though you represent Louisiana, Mr. Speaker of the House, bridge the gap between parties. Collaborate to take necessary actions. This is what I urge you to do.”

Based on NBC reports, about 25% of individuals below the age of 65 residing in Johnson's constituency use Medicaid as their healthcare coverage. Additionally, around 20% of these residents utilize food stamps to manage grocery expenses. The recent budget resolution approved by the House along strict partisan lines proposes slashing Medicaid funding by $880 billion, with cuts also impacting food stamp expenditures. slashed by $230 billion .

Meanwhile, the Republican budget proposal would extend President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax reductions until FY 2035. According to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, this extension would amount to approximately $4.5 trillion over that period. Centre for Budget and Policy Studies (CBPS) mentioned earlier that the legislation favored the wealthy, was costly, and did not fulfill its commitments. According to the CBPP analysis, high-income families were projected to receive over three times the amount of tax reductions compared to those from lower and middle-income brackets.

Summer Stinson from Vinton, Louisiana expressed her concerns to NBC about potentially not being able to afford health insurance if the budget that her congressman guided through the House of Representatives was enacted into law.

My kids rely on Medicaid, so I genuinely worry about this issue. The cost of insurance through our current providers is just too high," Stinson explained. "We honestly don't know how we'd manage without it.

Self-Healing Gel Mimics Human Skin, Scientists Reveal

Espoo [Finland], March 10 (ANI): Gels are frequently utilized substances known for their soft and adhesive properties. They can be applied hair Or to the gelatinous elements found in different types of foods. While humans skin shares gel -like characteristics, it has unique qualities These properties are extremely difficult to duplicate. The material boasts both high rigidity and flexibility, along with impressive self-repairing abilities, typically recovering fully within one day following damage.

Until now, artificial gel They have either duplicated this high stiffness or maintained naturality. skin While focusing on either its self-healing capabilities or another property, a group of scientists from Aalto University and the University of Bayreuth has become the first to create a hydrogel with these attributes. gel with a unique architecture that surpasses previous constraints, paving the way for uses like medication transport, injury recovery, flexible robotic sensing, and synthetic materials skin .

In the breakthrough study , the researchers incorporated unusually large and extremely thin particular clay nanosheets into the hydrogel. gel
Sure, here’s your revised sentence:
Thus, they generally have a soft and pliable nature. This leads to a well-organized structure featuring tightly intertwined polymers among the nanosheets, enhancing its hydrophobic properties. gel 's mechanical properties and allowing it to self-heal.

The secret of the material lies not only in the organised arrangement of the nanosheets, but also in the polymers that are entangled between them - and a process that's as simple as baking. Postdoctoral researcher Chen Liang mixed a powder of monomers with water that contains nanosheets. The mixture was then placed under a UV lamp - similar to that used to set gel Nail polish. The UV radiation from the light makes the tiny particles link up, transforming it into a flexible yet firm material—a gel ,' Liang explains.

'Entanglement means that the thin polymer layers start to twist around each other like tiny wool yarns, but in a random order,' adds Hang Zhang, from Aalto University. 'When the polymers are fully entangled, they are indistinguishable from each other. They are very dynamic and mobile at the molecular level, and when you cut them, they start to intertwine again.'

Four hours after cutting it with a knife, the material is already 80 or 90 percent self-healed. After 24 hours, it is typically completely repaired. Furthermore, a one-millimetre-thick hydro gel includes 10,000 layers of nanosheets, making the substance as rigid as human bone. skin , providing it with an equivalent level of stretchiness and flexibility.

Tough, rigid, and autonomously healing hydrogels gel have long posed challenges. We've uncovered a method to reinforce the traditionally soft hydrogels. gel "This has the potential to transform the creation of novel materials featuring bio-inspired characteristics," states Zhang.

This project vividly demonstrates how nature’s biological materials encourage us to explore novel property combinations in synthetic materials. Think about robots equipped with durable, self-repairing skin s or synthetic tissues that autonomously repair," says Olli Ikkala, from Aalto University. And even though there may be some way to go before real-world application, the current results represent a pivotal leap. How Much Sleep Do You Need? Unraveling the Mystery of Sleep Tests

It takes just an additional 46 minutes of sleep for you to perform better.

It's widely recognized that possessing a good night’s sleep is needed for brain health and wakefulness. Even though we've frequently been advised that we ought to aim for approximately eight hours of rest That rule has been shown to have broader applicability.

What you really Researchers indicate that only an additional 46 minutes of sleep compared to your usual amount can significantly impact your well-being.

Sleep deprivation It has been extensively studied, with adverse effects spanning from problems related to memory and thinking abilities, to genetic harm, and even diminished sexual function.

Nonetheless, a recent study conducted by scientists from Baylor University in Texas found that adding an extra few minutes of sleep each night had a beneficial impact on participants' general well-being, sociability, thankfulness, toughness, and 'thriving.' In the field of positive psychology, thriving refers to finding contentment in life.

The study, featured in the Journal of Positive Psychology, aimed to concentrate on the beneficial characteristics that improve with a quality night's rest, instead of dwelling on what deteriorates due to lack of sleep.

The concept originated from first-year medical student Alexander Do, who developed the research for his honors thesis. His supervisor, Dr. Michael Scullin, commented: "Alexander excelled at devising a innovative thesis idea, bridging the work he had done in my sleep lab over the past two years with a fresh domain that would significantly broaden the scope of sleep studies."

What precisely did the researchers undertake?

In this research, a cohort of 90 young adults within the age range of 18-24 was divided randomly into three groups. One group had late bedtimes, going to sleep at 2 am and waking up at 7:30 am. Another group followed an earlier schedule, retiring for the night at 10:30 pm and rising at 7:30 am. The final group maintained their typical sleeping pattern throughout the weekdays.

People who went to sleep later saw their sleep duration decrease by about 37 minutes on average when compared to those with typical sleeping patterns. In contrast, individuals from the earlier bedtime group enjoyed significantly more rest, increasing their sleep time by approximately 46 minutes over what is considered standard for most people.

Participants were additionally requested to maintain a journal of their sleeping patterns , which were tracked using an actigraphy feature on a smartwatch. They filled out questionnaires at the start and finish of each week to evaluate their level of drowsiness and undertook some cognitive tests as well.

What amount of sleep is necessary for you?

Getting adequate sleep is crucial for rejuvenating both our brain and physique. It plays a key role in sustaining optimal physical and psychological wellness and quality of life.

Typically, an adult in good health requires between 7 and 9 hours of rest each night; however, factors like age, overall wellness, and individual situations can affect this requirement. Additionally, natural variations mean that some individuals naturally gravitate towards sleeping longer hours.

To determine the optimal amount of sleep for you, observe the number of hours you slumber when performing at your peak. Should you possess a smartwatch, it might also prove beneficial to check whether you frequently stir during the night as this could impact your rest duration.

Source: NHS

The researchers aimed to determine if improved sleep might enhance psychological wellness, shifts in mindset, along with emotions of thriving, toughness, and thankfulness through documenting acts of gratitude in a diary.

They discovered that it was quite nuanced changes in sleep patterns were sufficient to make a considerable difference.

Dr Michael Sculline, one of the co-authors, mentioned: "We observed that individuals who extended their sleep time by approximately 46 minutes each night reported higher levels of resilience, gratitude, life satisfaction, and a stronger sense of purpose in their lives."

When individuals had their sleep reduced slightly by an average of 37 minutes each night, they reported decreases in their mood, resilience, sense of well-being, and feelings of thankfulness.

The study also revealed that sleep quality influenced not just the participants' well-being but also their engagement in prosocial behaviors like donating to charities and participating in community projects, potentially leading to broader social benefits.

Dr Scullin stated: “It appears that obtaining additional rest extends beyond merely feeling more awake throughout the day. Improved sleep enables you to gain clearer insight into your future path and enhances your ability to bounce back from difficulties you might encounter down the road.”

What Are the Healthiest Sleep Positions? Doctors Reveal the Top 2 Benefits-Rich Poses

Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? The way you sleep can affect both the quality of your rest and your general well-being.

Sleep is essential for all bodily functions. Achieving the suggested seven to nine hours each night aids in maintaining a healthy brain, heart, immune system, skin, and various other aspects of well-being. Additionally, the position in which you sleep plays an important role.

The way you lie down when sleeping impacts your quality of rest and might exacerbate issues such as back pain, snoring, acid reflux, among others.

Regardless of whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, you might wonder which one is actually the healthiest sleeping posture. To find out more, we consulted specialists in sleep regarding the optimal as well as the least beneficial positions for overall health.

What causes us to sleep in specific positions?

It remains uncertain precisely what drives individuals to select one sleeping posture over another; however, typically, people opt for positions they find comfortable, according to Shelby Harris, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist and the director of sleep health at Sleepopolis.

Nevertheless, your favored sleeping posture might also be influenced by factors such as your body structure, your choice of mattress, the type of pillows you use, and whether you share a bed with someone else, according to Harris.

When you discover the sleep posture that feels best for you, it often turns into a routine thereafter, according to Harris. Nevertheless, your sleeping position might shift subtly over time as well. Many individuals switch between different postures during the course of one night, and they may also alter their preferred positions across various stages of life, explains Harris.

Changing habits can be difficult, but you can teach yourself to sleep in a different position. As Harris points out, "Most people eventually adapt, though it does take some time to become accustomed to it."

What is the most frequently adopted sleep posture?

The most common sleeping position among adults is side sleeping, either on the right or left side. More than 60% of people prefer to sleep on their side, based on the information from the Sleep Foundation .

The second most frequent sleep posture is resting on one’s back with the face upward, known as the "supine" position.

Dr. Dianne Augelli, a sleep medicine specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian, notes that most individuals generally find sleeping on their side or back to be more comfortable.

The least favored sleep posture is lying face down, with studies indicating that individuals spend fewer than 10 percent of nighttime hours in this position. per the Sleep Foundation .

Which sleep posture is considered the most beneficial for your well-being?

The healthiest sleeping position for you will be the one that is most comfortable and helps you fall and stay asleep. "There's no one best way to sleep. It's whatever works for you to limit the amount of pain that you have and help you to feel well-rested," says Harris.

Sideways versus back versus stomach sleeping

Lying on your side or back is typically viewed as more beneficial for your health compared to sleeping on your stomach, which can lead to various issues like back pain. "In the field of sleep medicine, we often favor side-sleeping," explains Augelli.

As mentioned, sleeping on your back or side might worsen specific health issues; for instance, acid reflux could become more severe when lying on your back, and shoulder troubles might intensify when you're on your side. Conversely, some individuals suffering from sleep apnea might find relief by sleeping face down.

In essence, the most beneficial sleep posture for you depends on your personal health condition, according to Harris. "It's not like everyone needs To sleep on their side," Augelli adds. "This varies depending on whether there is an issue and what that specific issue might be.

Always consult your physician if you have queries or worries regarding your sleep. Nonetheless, these sleeping postures are typically suggested for the subsequent issues:

Optimal sleep posture for alleviating back or neck discomfort

If you experience discomfort in your back or neck, choosing an appropriate sleeping posture can significantly reduce spinal stress, according to specialists. They recommend lying flat on your back for optimal relief of back pain and maintaining proper alignment of the spine—provided you also provide adequate support beneath the neck, Augelli emphasizes.

A tiny cushion or a folded towel may alternatively be placed beneath the knees to alleviate stress from the lower back. per the Mayo Clinic .

Snoozing on your side, supported correctly, might assist with discomfort in your back or neck, according to specialists. As Harris points out, "Ensure you use an appropriate pillow beneath your neck to bridge the space between your shoulders and head." Additionally, positioning a cushion between your knees could aid in realigning your spine and hips, thus reducing pain.

"In general, sleeping on your stomach isn’t great for maintaining spinal health," according to Augelli.

Pillows can indeed have an impact. According to Harris, individuals who sleep on their back or side typically benefit from a pillow of moderate height, whereas those who sleep on their stomachs would prefer a flatter pillow or even none at all.

Optimal sleeping posture for alleviating sleep apnea and snoring

For individuals with sleep-related breathing issues like sleep apnea, sleeping on their side or stomach is usually more beneficial. These positions assist in keeping the airways clear, according to the experts.

Sleep apnea is a condition that leads to repeated pauses and starts in your breathing throughout the night. as per the National Institutes of Health .

"You're typically going to have better breathing if you sleep on your side or stomach, or alternate between them, rather than sleeping on your back," according to Augelli.

Lying flat on your back is generally regarded as the least favorable posture for snoring or experiencing sleep apnea.

"Occasionally, individuals may experience snoring or sleep apnea exclusively when they're lying on their backs due to gravity causing additional tissue to shift into the airway," explains Augelli. This narrowing of the airway can then impede the flow of air.

Harris points out that various treatments are available for snoring and sleep apnea, including lifestyle modifications, surgical procedures, and dental or medical devices. Discuss with your physician which option would be most suitable for you.

The optimal sleep posture for managing acid reflux.

Lying on your left side typically offers the greatest benefits for individuals dealing with acid reflux and could aid in lessening the symptoms, as Augelli points out.

Gastroesophageal reflux happens when stomach acid rises upward into the esophagus, potentially leading to heartburn along with various other symptoms. the Cleveland Clinic Chronic acid reflux may result in GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). According to Augelli, both acid reflux and GERD tend to worsen during nighttime hours, which can affect sleep quality and how long one sleeps.

A study from 2022 published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology discovered that sleeping on the left side led to reduced nighttime esophageal acid exposure when compared to sleeping on the right side or on the back.

The specialists suggest that using pillows to raise the upper body or elevating the head might help reduce nighttime heartburn as well.

Lying flat on your back or stomach might exacerbate acid reflux.

The optimal sleep posture when expecting

According to experts, side-sleeping is deemed the most comfortable and advantageous position during pregnancy. While you can opt for either side, many physicians suggest sleeping on your left side throughout this period, as it is believed to enhance circulation.

Pillows designed for pregnancy or shaped like a U, which you place between your knees to support your belly and back, can assist in maintaining a comfy side-lying posture, according to Augelli.

Typically, individuals who are expecting should aim to refrain from lying on their back or stomach, particularly as they advance into the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

While sleeping on your back, the additional weight from an expanding uterus can put extra pressure on the spine and might constrict a significant blood vessel, according to perصند the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Stomach sleeping might be comfortable in the initial phases of pregnancy; however, it becomes quite uncomfortable as the uterus expands, according to Harris.

Which sleep posture is considered the unhealthiest?

Experts point out that the unhealthiest sleeping posture is one that leads to significant discomfort, exacerbates pre-existing medical conditions, raises the likelihood of negative incidents, or interferes with restful sleep.

Typically, sleeping on your stomach is usually the least favorable position for those experiencing back or neck pain, while lying on your back is often considered the most problematic posture for individuals with sleep apnea and snoring issues. Additionally, both positions are less than optimal during pregnancy or when dealing with acid reflux.

While side-sleeping is a favorite among many, it could cause or worsen shoulder pain in the side you sleep on, the experts note.

"Should nothing prove effective, be sure to consult with your physician to ensure we accurately identify the issue, focus on addressing it directly, and secure the necessary treatment for you," advises Harris.

Study Reveals: Exercise Intensity Could Ease the Pain of Hangovers

There have been numerous items lauded as hangover remedies throughout the years, from 'hair of the dog' In line with the late, esteemed Anthony Bourdain's recommendation of "aspirin, a chilled Coke, and fiery Sichuan cuisine."

It's unavoidable that individuals will experience the impacts of alcohol The following day, if they consume sufficient amounts – everything that goes up must eventually come down, after all.

However, recent studies have uncovered unexpected lifestyle elements that might lessen the intensity of hangovers.

A new research indicates that instead of considering what one consumes for food or drinks the following day, how frequently someone exercises plays a significant role in determining the intensity of their hangover symptoms.

The study is featured in the journal Addictive Behaviors and included 1,676 undergraduate participants.

Each of them had experienced being hungover at least one time within the preceding three months during the conduct of the study.

All participants engaged in the study performed a minimum of half an hour of moderate workout each week.

The data was collected through questionnaires that documented participants' alcohol intake, along with the intensity of their hangover symptoms and the level of physical activity they engaged in.

Higher amounts of physical activity contribute to an improved metabolism, allowing your body to process alcohol more effectively. Additionally, working out triggers the release of endorphins that serve as natural analgesics.

This follows an earlier study which showed that there is no proof of Consuming ample amounts of water helps eliminate hangover symptoms. .

Bauchi Govt Launches Task Force to Slash Maternal and Neonatal Death Rates

...approves N872 million as matching funds for health basket initiatives

The government of Bauchi State has established and launched a task force focused on decreasing maternal and neonatal death rates. This effort is aimed at advancing safer pregnancies within the region. By enhancing accessibility and quality of healthcare, especially for pregnant women and infants, this program seeks to achieve significant improvements.

The task force was formally launched by the Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sani Mohammed Dambam, on Friday following the completion of a five-day implementation design workshop focused on the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), which took place in Bauchi.

At the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Dambam assigned the team with the duty to examine medical institutions throughout the state, focusing specifically on primary health care centers, to guarantee the delivery of high-quality health care services to individuals seeking treatment.

"We express our gratitude to our newly arrived National Health Heroes who have recently joined us. I am delighted to have been an integral part of this significant meeting and training session from start to finish. Even though I wasn’t physically present all the time, I received timely updates regarding the workshop’s proceedings," he mentioned.

He underscored for the task force members that their journey had only started, emphasizing that the genuine challenge resided in practical execution out in the field as opposed to discussions held in the office.

Bauchi Governor Assures Christians of Equitable Governance
In Bauchi, police have confirmed the horrific murder of a 70-year-old grandmother accused of practicing witchcraft.
The government of Bauchi has ended contracts with food suppliers for boarding schools.

"Our mothers and society as a whole are anxiously awaiting our implementation of this commendable program aimed at enhancing the health and welfare of the citizens of Bauchi State and the country at large. It greatly pleases me that we have leaders deeply dedicated to these efforts, with the governor, Senator Bala Muhammad Abdulkadir, leading from the front," he concluded.

Dr. Dambam emphasized that healthcare has consistently been a key focus area ever since the present government took office in 2019. He disclosed that the Governor has sanctioned an additional N872 million as matching funds for the Healthcare Basket Fund with the aim of enhancing health services even more.

"It is pleasing to learn that, in addition to the previously discussed initiatives, the Governor has generously agreed to provide N872 million as matching funds for the Healthcare Basket Fund," he said.

Indeed, Bauchi State is the only contributor to this year's Basket Fund initiatives, and we have issued the instructions accordingly. The funds should be transferred to the Basket Fund account at any time now. We are quite pleased about this. Additionally, we urge our collaborators, notably Aliko Dangote and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to think about expanding their financial plans for the upcoming half-decade.

He stressed that this step was essential since the project is set to conclude by the end of this year. Nonetheless, Bauchi State has continually fulfilled its co-funding responsibilities.

"We stand as the sole state documented in this manner. It gives us great optimism that our collaborators have been highly impressed by both the performance and dedication shown by the state government under Governor’s leadership," he stated.

Dr. Dambam voiced his belief that the MAMII program would follow in the footsteps of earlier successful healthcare ventures. He guaranteed that this initiative would not operate independently; rather, it would merge seamlessly with current programs aimed at improving maternal and child health as well as reducing mortality rates.

Aliko Dangote and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation praised the Bauchi State Government for launching the Taskforce, emphasizing that this initiative was well-timed and intended to decrease maternal and newborn death rates as well as enhance the overall health of mothers and children.

A spokesperson from the JHPIEGO program at Johns Hopkins related to international education in gynecology and obstetrics commended the implementation of the MAMII initiative. They noted that this program will substantially aid in reducing elevated levels of maternal and newborn deaths throughout the nation.

At the same time, eleven Local Government Areas within Bauchi State have been chosen for the execution of the Nigeria Healthcare Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) initiative as part of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII). This program is being carried out via the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), which is led by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Development.

Hormonal Harmony Unveiled: A Conversation with Lieselot Theys

  2. Beweging

Sta minstens elk uur even op.

  4. Slaap

Slaap is zo’n ondergeschoven kindje.
