Ex-MLB Players with VA Connections Among Victims of DR Roof Collapse

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (WWBT) - Two Major League Baseball players with connections to Virginia were among those who died following an incident that claimed hundreds of lives. The rooftop of a nightclub in the Dominican Republic caved in.

Both Octavio Dotel Tony Blanco was extracted from the debris during the night but passed away subsequently.

Dotel, who was 51 years old at the time, began his Major League Baseball career in 1999. He played for 13 different teams and also competed in the minor leagues with the Norfolk Tides. WVEC .

Blanco, who is 44 years old, was part of the Washington Nationals in 2005 and also represented both Japan and the Dominican Republic.

So far, only about several dozen individuals among the confirmed 180 fatalities have been recognized, marking one of the deadliest incidents to occur in the Dominican Republic.

Death Toll Rises to 218 in Dominican Nightclub Roof Collapse Tragedy

The death toll from a roofing collapse at a well-known nightclub in the Dominican Republic climbed to 218 on Thursday, according to an official statement.

Juan Manuel Méndez, who leads the Center of Emergency Operations, stated that teams present at the location continue their search for victims and possible survivors; however, nobody has been located alive since Tuesday afternoon.

We have essentially searched every inch around ground zero," he stated, noting that only a tiny section of debris remains where teams are concentrating their efforts. "This whole situation has been extremely challenging for everyone involved.

At the same time, numerous individuals in Santo Domingo’s capital continued to search for their missing relatives, becoming increasingly exasperated as they received no responses after checking various hospitals and the nation's forensics institution.

Physicians cautioned that out of the two dozen patients still admitted to the hospital, some were not yet out of danger, particularly the eight individuals whose conditions were deemed critical.

"If the injuries are severe, there isn’t much time" remaining to rescue patients in such critical condition, stated Health Minister Víctor Atallah.

He and several other medical professionals stated that the victims suffered from fractures in their skulls, thigh bones, and pelvic regions due to concrete panels collapsing onto attendees of a merengue performance at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, resulting in over 200 people being hurt.

On Wednesday evening, the government announced that they were transitioning to a recovery stage aimed at locating victims.

The iconic nightclub was filled with musicians, pro athletes, and government officials when debris started raining down onto their beverages early Tuesday. Shortly after, the rooftop caved in.

The victims encompassed merengue star Rubby Pérez, who was performing for the audience when the ceiling collapsed; ex-MLB athletes Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera; as well as Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, located in the northwest part of the country, with his sibling being the renowned seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.

Among those who lost their lives were a former UN official; Luis Solís, the saxophonist performing when the ceiling collapsed; New York City-based fashion designer Martín Polanco; the son-in-law and daughter of the public works minister; the sibling of the deputy minister for youth affairs; along with three workers from Grupo Popular, a financial institution, which included the head of AFP Popular Bank alongside his spouse.

Randolfo Rijo Gómez, who leads the nation’s 911 service, mentioned that they fielded over 100 emergency calls, including some from individuals trapped beneath debris. According to him, law enforcement personnel reached the location within 90 seconds, quickly followed by initial responders. Within approximately thirty minutes, the efforts included deploying 25 troops, seven firefighting teams, and mobilizing 77 ambulance services, as stated by him.

Authorities stated that teams utilized canines and thermal imaging devices to locate individuals, successfully saving over 180 survivors from the debris.

Initially, it was not evident what led to the roof collapsing, nor did it seem known when the Jet Set building had its most recent inspection.

The authorities announced late Wednesday that after the conclusion of the recovery stage, they would initiate an extensive inquiry.

The club released a statement indicating their cooperation with law enforcement officials. A representative of the family who owns the club informed The Associated Press that they were relaying inquiries concerning possible inspections.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works referred questions to the mayor’s office. A spokesperson for the mayor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Minnesota Sisters From Myanmar Raise Funds for Earthquake Relief Back Home

The death toll of the Southeast Asia earthquake has risen above 3,100 individuals. In Myanmar, search crews are sifting through debris hoping to find any trace of over 200 people who remain unaccounted for.

While recovery operations persist, a local organization based in the Twin Cities is exerting maximum effort to assist individuals abroad.

That was the moment when this earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck Myanmar, causing these St. Paul sisters to reach their limit.

“I found it hard to comprehend; things were just so baffling. As I examined it further, they became increasingly overwhelming,” stated Mirian Seng Bu, a resident of St. Paul. Mirian along with her sisters Ruth, Margaret, and Mary belong to the ‘Kachin’ ethnic group, which is part of the larger Tibeto-Burman community from northern Myanmar, commonly referred to as Burma. Following the military takeover, their family decided upon settling down in Minnesota.

Therefore, as they consume headlines reporting a death toll exceeding 3,000 in and around their home country...

I told my sisters right here, 'We can’t stay idle anymore,’ so we began brainstorming ideas for raising funds,” explained Mirian.

An idea has currently garnered more than $6,000 through GoFundMe along with a significant amount raised outside this platform.

"Essentially, what we want to ensure is that every single donation goes directly to those affected out there," Mirian said to WCCO.

They are collaborating with an Anglican archbishop well-acquainted with the family and a head of a youth philanthropy group who has previously assisted in similar scenarios.

"She was saved after being stuck for more than 120 hours at a hotel in Mandalay," Mirian mentioned additionally.

And as the sisters cannot be there to save...

Just let me voice support for my nation," Mirian stated. "Our folks are not quitters; I have faith in them. They will strive hard to reconstruct our tomorrow.

All the sisters have attended St. Paul College and are hoping their fundraising initiatives will make significant progress.

Laporan Anggit Puji Widodo

Southeast Asia's second largest economy revises tourism strategy, still targets 38 million visitors despite earthquake

Thailand, the second largest economy in Southeast Asia, is maintaining its forecast for foreign tourist arrivals at 38 million this year despite the powerful earthquake that rocked Southeast Asia last week.

The impact of the quake is to be limited and short-term, Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong told reporters on Monday, adding more than 1,000 hotel room bookings had been canceled since the quake centered in Myanmar hit Bangkok on Friday.

The ministry plans to revise its strategy for the second half of this year to address the sluggish Chinese market and weak confidence following the earthquake.

Thienthong said that a tourism risk and crisis management team will be established to support the industry, with representatives from organizations in the tourism supply chain, such as the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Roads Authority.

He said that based on initial feedback from the private sector, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports plans to collaborate with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to issue certificates for hotels that have passed a safety examination following the earthquake.

The ministry will focus on communicating a single message, ensuring that Thailand is safe for travel, he noted.

Sorawong added that the Chinese market is the most sensitive to news concerning the earthquake, and the ministry plans to discuss the matter with the Chinese ambassador, seeking to restore confidence.

Given the upcoming Songkran celebrations, all activities are expected to go ahead as planned. The ministry has asked the Tourist Police to coordinate with provincial police to ensure tourism safety in major areas.

Sorawong showed his belief that the sluggish period for bookings would not last for a long time, as authorities have been consistently working to solve the issue.

He estimated that the average hotel occupancy rate during April and the Songkran festive period will remain around 60%, lower than last year's rate of 65%.

Meanwhile, a representative from the Airlines Association of Thailand said airline bookings during the two days after the earthquake decreased by 40-60%. The drop in bookings from China was particularly significant, declining by 60%.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake was the strongest to hit Myanmar in a century, with the death toll at 2,719 as of Wednesday.

In Thailand, the death toll from the quake rose to 21 on Tuesday, with hundreds of buildings damaged.

Between January and March 16, Thailand welcomed 8.3 million international visitors, a 3.9% increase year-on-year.

Shake-Up in Malibu: Essential Earthquake Updates

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Malibu region on Sunday evening, impacting numerous locals.

The earthquake occurred at 8:17 PM Pacific Time, approximately eight miles away from Westlake Village and nine miles from Thousand Oaks, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). It had a focal depth of seven miles.

Why It Matters

Over the past ten days, the Los Angeles area has experienced two quakes measuring 3.0 or higher on the Richter scale.

Last year, there was also a rise in moderate seismic events, according to seismologist Lucy Jones. The Los Angeles Times .

The previous year witnessed fifteen seismic events, each of which featured at least one earthquake measuring 4.0 or greater in magnitude. the highest in a single year in over sixty years.

What To Know

There have been no reports of injuries or property damage after the earthquake on Sunday.

Yet, over 3,000 individuals reported having experienced the earthquake by 3 a.m. on Monday, as stated by the USGS.

California's initial alert system, USGS ShakeAlert, was triggered by the earthquake; however, notifications weren’t sent to mobile devices because the tremor didn't reach the required magnitude of 4.5.

The city of Agoura Hills distributed an earthquake advisory to its inhabitants on Sunday.

“Drop, cover, and hold on when shaking occurs; develop an emergency plan and prepare kits for both your vehicle and residence; ensure large items such as bookshelves, fridges, water heaters, TVs, and wall-mounted objects are secured,” it stated on X, previously known as Twitter. Twitter .

The statement was amended to read: “In case of an earthquake while driving, attempt to safely pull over and halt the vehicle. Engage the parking brake.”

Los Angeles is near the San Andreas Fault zone, making earthquakes common in the area.

Many earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.5 or higher have occurred. were documented near the fault line at the beginning of this month.

What People Are Saying

A resident in Thousand Oaks told the Los Angeles Times They experienced "quite a shake" that went on for approximately 10 seconds on Sunday.

Sergeant Joseph De Mel , from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department station in Agoura, experienced the earthquake as well, but noted that it "wasn't particularly intense."

What Happens Next

Geologists are keeping a close watch on California's fault lines due to rising worries about the potential for the "Big One" happening in the next few years. This term describes a significant seismic event that might take place along the San Andreas Fault.

Researchers forecast that this seismic event might attain a magnitude of 7.8 or greater, potentially leading to extensive damage throughout southern California or the San Francisco Bay Area, contingent upon where the fault ruptures.

Abandoned Diver Seeks Safety Review After Ocean Ordeal

A scuba diver who was abandoned in the sea near Perth when his vessel departed unexpectedly has applauded the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for investigating the matter.

Ian, who has had their last name omitted for confidentiality purposes, was among the two individuals saved by a nearby Rottnest Ferry Following several hours approximately two to three nautical miles offshore on March 2.

Ian stated that it was crucial for the AMSA investigation to uncover what had occurred.

"I place my complete trust in our regulator, AMSA, to conduct a thorough investigation into how and why we were abandoned by our dive boat," Ian stated.

Although it's common to look for quick solutions, I encourage everybody to refrain from making judgments until the complete AMSA report is available.

In spite of the stringent headcounts and roll-call procedures instructed by diving organizations, such incidents continue to occur.

Although the problem might have resulted from human mistake or poor communication, he pointed out that dive boat operators bear considerable accountability when it comes to ensuring divers’ safety.

He stated that when divers rely on a dive operator for their safety, they are entitled to expect that appropriate protocols will be adhered to.

Neglecting to verify each diver’s presence before departing from the location is unacceptable, and we must take away valuable lessons from this.

I am confident that AMSA's findings will aid in bolstering safety protocols and avoiding subsequent accidents.

AMSA stated in a press release issued on Wednesday that they would intervene should a violation be detected.

"AMSA places great importance on the safety of both passengers and crew members and will not shy away from taking immediate and robust measures if any violations of safety rules or protocols are detected," the statement read.

fortunate salvation by the ferry team

The ABC has learned that Ian and another individual were seen in the water by someone onboard a Rottness ferry which was heading back to Hillarys.

It is known that the divers had spent several hours underwater after the vessel they were with went back to land without them.

James Mulholland, who is the director of Rottnest Fast Ferries, stated that the men were retrieved from the water and brought to land.

The ABC was informed that one of the men subsequently went to the hospital.

The gentlemen were participating in a diving excursion organized by the Perth Diving Academy, which operates out of Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Upon being contacted by ABC Radio Perth, Perth Diving Academy director Troy Lane initially declined to comment but later stated that everyone was safe and "no one perished."

The incident mirrors the case of the American tourists Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who were accidentally remained behind during a scuba diving excursion in North Queensland way back in 1998 .

Even after an extensive search, their remains were never discovered.

Three-Year Battle Over Flood Insurance Payout: A Cautionary Tale

As former tropical cyclone Alfred approached the coastline, Lismore resident Elizabeth Mackney experienced an increasing sense of worry.

Only a few weeks prior, she had gotten the insurance compensation for the damage caused by the floods at her house in 2022 and was concerned about having to face it once more.

Fortunately, her house escaped damage this time, but she cautions those who have thus far submitted 34,000 insurance claims pertaining to Alfred to prepare for a lengthy journey ahead.

"You should expect it won’t be simple; it’s akin to appearing in court without representation,” Ms Mackney said to aynur1015.blogspot.com.

Dealing with NRMA following the flood has caused far more distress than the actual flooding.

Ms Mackney has adorned her house with fairy lights and foil streamers to mask the harm done to her kitchen, living space, dining area, swimming pool, and various other parts of her home.

She submitted an insurance claim less than seven days after the flooding occurred, yet she and her son have resided in their ' uninhabitable' house over the last three years awaiting payment. This situation followed when her ex-husband along with their other offspring left them.

Ms Mackney and her insurance company had differing opinions regarding the repair costs, leading to a disagreement that was submitted to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority earlier this year. The authority ultimately sided largely with Ms Mackney in their ruling.

She mentioned that it simply spun around in loops, moving between various individuals.

Ms Mackney feels her situation "slipped through the gaps," and she hopes that every insurer providing coverage for significant incidents offers proper training for their employees.

She stated that if you're offering protection against natural calamities, then during such events, it’s crucial to have personnel skilled in handling and communicating effectively with individuals undergoing severe emotional distress.

She advised communities affected by floods to remain cautious and have the courage to turn down an initial financial offer if they feel it won’t be sufficient for their recovery needs.

"Jot down each discussion you engage in, record the date, time, and everything covered, along with taking pictures—do all these sorts of things," she stated.

A significant degree of self-assurance is needed when it comes to comprehension, communication skills, and overall literacy.

A representative from NRMA Insurance mentioned that recent modifications have been implemented to enhance engagements with susceptible clients. These updates include providing additional training for customer-facing employees as well as collaborating partners who are constructors.

"The company expressed disappointment over the customer’s experience and apologized for both the delayed resolution of their claim and the distress experienced throughout the process," it stated.

Since the 2022 floods, we've implemented major alterations throughout the company, aimed at assisting customers and communities impacted by ex-tropical cyclone Alfred in southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales.

NRMA mentioned that their claims team has been strengthened and their partner builder network expanded, ensuring that homes affected by Alfred will be restored promptly. They have deployed representatives at recovery centers and dispatched mobile response units for assistance.

The majority of claims submitted for Alfred pertain to water damage or food spoiling due to power failures. To date, approximately $2.4 million has been disbursed in emergency funds to around 6000 clients, as reported by the Insurance Council of Australia.

Even though Lismore often faces threats from natural disasters, Ms. Mackney remains resolute in staying within the community where she has lived for over two decades and rebuilding her house.

She expressed her affection for the house and their location, noting that despite some frightening instances, it was truly lovely.

Tornadoes and Storms Ravage U.S., Leaving 16 Dead

Over 20 tornadoes allegedly hit the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, and Mississippi. Meteorologists caution that the most severe conditions may still be ahead, with the intense weather expected to reach its climax on Saturday evening.

Several tornadoes have struck extensive areas of the U.S. Southeast and Midwest, destroying houses and resulting in at least 16 fatalities, according to authorities.

Over 20 twisters were recorded from Friday night through early Saturday morning as a low-pressure system brought intense thunderstorms across the nation’s midsection, according to David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

There is a substantial likelihood of additional tornados sweeping through Alabama and Mississippi today, with the probability standing at 30%," he stated. "This is quite notable.

At least 11 fatalities reported in Missouri exclusively.

The authorities stated that the highest number of casualties occurred in Missouri, with a minimum of 11 deaths confirmed. According to the state’s law enforcement agency, tornadoes, severe storms, and giant hail led to fallen power lines and toppled trees, resulting in significant property destruction.

Tornadoes struck Illinois, Mississippi, and Arkansas as well, with authorities reporting that at least three individuals lost their lives.

"Teams are currently assessing the destruction caused by yesterday evening’s tornadoes, and we have first responders on site providing assistance," stated Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders on X, noting that she has allocated $250,000 (€228,000) for disaster relief efforts.

The broadcaster NBC stated that over 400,000 individuals in the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States found themselves without electricity.

What is the anticipated development of these storms like?

Additional tornadoes are expected across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee for the duration of Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, the storms were heading eastward, potentially reaching Florida and Georgia by midnight.

Meteorologists indicated that the intense weather conditions were anticipated to intensify further, with an elevated chance of tornadoes and heavy thunderstorms developing as the night progressed.

Islanders Who Dodged Millions in Damage From Cyclone Alfred Call Themselves Lucky

Residents refer to Moreton Island as a haven.

Encircled by pristine waters along the south-eastern coastline of Queensland, this sandy island lacks asphalted roads and its inhabitants primarily reside without being connected to public utilities.

Aaron Conis has been coming to the Island since he was 16 years old and now considers Moreton as his home.

"There hasn't been much change in the last 40 years," he stated.

Just the ideal retreat from society, which is precisely why we’re all gathered here.

More than just a peaceful retreat located 58 kilometers away from Brisbane, Moreton Island and the adjacent bay islands of Queensland hold significant importance for the area.

They safeguard Brisbane and other mainland regions against intense storm surges and ocean swells, serving as natural defenses.

And they were instrumental in protecting millions from the brunt of Cyclone Alfred.

Mr Conis stated that it was accurate that the islands effectively shielded Brisbane.

However, when it comes to playing rescuers, the level of sacrifice could have been much greater.

He remarked, 'It’s akin to receiving a Purple Heart for merely swatting a mosquito.'

Islands serve as natural obstacles

The Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner stated that the city "avoided a major issue."

Moreton, North Stradbroke, and Bribie Islands served as buffers, bearing the initial impact of Cyclone Alfred before it weakened into a tropical low.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) stated that Alfred initially made landfall on Queensland's offshore islands as a Category One tropical cyclone.

"When engaging with the islands, the system slowed down and started to weaken," according to the BOM explanation.

The wind gusts subsided, causing the system to fall below cyclone strength.

Steve Turton, an associate professor of environmental geography at Central Queensland University, has spent three decades researching tropical storms.

He indicated that it was reasonable to state the islands effectively shielded Brisbane from a far more damaging storm.

“If those islands weren’t out there, it likely would have continued advancing inward and might have stayed at category two intensity,” he explained to the ABC.

He mentioned that regions on the mainland, away from the island group, faced greater exposure, which explains why the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast experienced much stronger impacts.

He stated that there is no offshore protection.

Not only are they vulnerable to events like this, but also to East Coast Lows.

The people who live on Moreton Island feel fortunate.

Even though the Bay Islands experienced the brunt of the storm, residents report that they ended up with less damage than anticipated.

When compared to certain regions on the mainland, they consider themselves fortunate.

Initially, Moreton Island experienced gusts of up to 100 km/h.

However, Mr Conis, who assists at a store in the northwestern township of Bulwer, mentioned that the effect "wasn't really severe."

He mentioned that several trees had fallen, debris was scattered everywhere, and there was significant soil erosion.

The shop received a few tree branches through the roof and lost power, but things are finally beginning to fall into place now.

Moreton Island operates independently of any energy supplier.

A majority of the locals and enterprises rely on solar energy, battery systems, and generators, which means they were quite equipped to handle a natural calamity.

Bulwer local Colleen Gaffney mentioned that "everything continued as usual."

The individual, who is 64 years old, oversees 40 properties on the island, with just two of them experiencing water damage.

She mentioned it wasn’t something serious.

"No-one was scared."

The north side of Stradbroke encountered the heart of the storm.

On North Stradbroke Island, the cleanup efforts have been quite extensive; however, residents were still taken aback by how quickly things bounced back.

The center of the cyclone grazed North Stradbroke, passing over the island as a Category One storm.

Marco Kelsand ventured to the headland with a companion to observe the eye of the storm passing through on Saturday.

He observed the skies grow darker and the winds become increasingly strong prior to turning "dull".

He believed the island had mostly escaped unscathed until the weather made another severe change.

"The next evening turned out to be the one when everything fell apart," Mr Kelsall stated.

The winds intensified once more and howled through... at certain moments, you genuinely felt uneasy.

The individual mentioned that at age 27, the island experienced extensive power failures and significant flooding, with several buildings completely submerged in water.

Separated from the rest of the land, local volunteers stepped forward to clear the roads and visit elderly residents.

However, within roughly three days, emergency vessels started to arrive, initiating efforts to rebuild the power supply and communications infrastructure.

"The majority of it, they’ve really dived into, which is excellent," Mr Kelsall stated.

Although some spots are still experiencing minor flooding, it’s incredible how effectively the water has receded, considering we’re on an island.

Islands set to recover

Julian O'Grady, a senior coastal researcher at the CSIRO, stated that the sand islands like Stradbroke, Moreton, and K'gari to the north have developed inherent toughness over time.

They had a "vital part" in protecting the mainland from ocean waves, yet they were strategically positioned to bounce back from severe meteorological conditions.

He mentioned that winds over millennia have sculpted massive, steep, and high sand dunes on the barrier islands, allowing for quick draining through the permeable sands.

Conversely, the flat areas of mainland Brisbane hold onto water for extended periods due to their reliance on sluggish draining through both natural and man-made systems.

It was anticipated that the beaches would also recover through natural means.

Professor Turton mentioned that although it might take some time, the sand will ultimately find its way back, and the beaches will revert to their previous condition.

Locals struggle to leave

Even though the natural setting might be adept at handling extreme weather conditions, there remained a possibility that residents could find themselves cut off for several days.

Natalie Lutter, a volunteer with the Bay Islands Kindness Team, mentioned that the effects of Alfred led to numerous vulnerable individuals requiring assistance.

The organization assists communities on Bay Islands including Macleay, Russell, Lamb, and Karragarra.

In the last seven days, they have assisted numerous locals with property cleanups and supplied them with meals, grocery items, and necessities.

Ms Lutter mentioned that several residents attempted to depart from the islands prior to the storm; however, not everyone managed to reach the mainland before ferry services ceased operations.

"The bay can be perilous because of strong currents, consistent winds, and floating debris in our waters," she stated.

This may lead to transportation being interrupted until conditions become safe, which in turn impacts medical services, food supply, employment, and education.

Several residents have had their power disconnected for over 120 hours, however, Energex has been working to restore these essential services, as mentioned by her.

Isles will keep safeguarding Brisbane

Professor Turton stated that the islands will remain significant in the future, particularly when dealing with intensified cyclones.

He mentioned that if they pass those islands, these would continue to offer protection, yet there’s still room for a more intense storm.

The intensity of Alfred was reduced due to its more leisurely tempo.

Doctor O'Grady from the CSIRO mentioned that there was additional time for friction to occur over land, which helped dissipate the storm's energy.

"As they cross land, there isn’t the warming effect of the ocean beneath them, causing them to dissipate," he explained.

They lack the moisture needed to fuel and invigorate the tropical cyclone.

However, if quicker cyclones were to come closer in the days ahead, the islands would have limited options for action.

"To be frank, [this time] they escaped with relatively minor consequences given how bad things could have turned out," Professor Turton stated.

Should cyclones move swiftly, the islands might fail to provide complete protection for the mainland.

For residents of the islands such as Mr Conis, the prospect of being in the storm buffer zone didn’t faze him if the weather were to become more intense in years to come.

He was more concerned that others might discover their picture-perfect way of living.

He stated, 'I don’t believe the weather is anybody’s business.'

The reality is that we lack both traffic signals and paved roads… our biggest concern is that an influx of visitors might discover this place.

Cubans Struggle as New Power Outage Hits Nation

Many Cubans remained without electricity for a consecutive day on Saturday. However, similar to the previous significant blackouts over the last six months, people are adapting--albeit with a sense of inevitability.

The recent power outage started late Friday at a substation close to Havana before expanding across the country, impacting most of the financially strained island's 9.7 million inhabitants.

On Saturday, officials stated they were endeavoring to reinstate electricity.

Meanwhile, Cubans were making the most of their situation.

Jorge Suarez, a 47-year-old attorney, visited a private bar in Havana for a drink. The establishment remained operational with the help of a compact generator.

He said to AFP, 'One gets accustomed to these conditions.' It’s similar to how animals living in deserts must adapt to survive without water.

All we can do now is adapt and await intervention from the government, as resolving this issue falls within their jurisdiction.

Adela Alba, who is 37 years old, runs the place, which functions both as an eatery and a grocery store.

"It’s extremely challenging to work under these conditions,” she remarked. “Electricity is crucial for every task.”

Her modest generator assists in keeping at least some basic services running since they still need to cover rent and taxes amid these circumstances, she explained.

Cubans have been enduring a severe economic downturn characterized by pervasive scarcity of food, fuel, and medicines. The country’s outdated and frequently malfunctioning power infrastructure has exacerbated these difficulties.

Ariel Mas Castellanos, an official from the electric company in Havana, stated to local media that the faulty equipment "has been operational for several years and is now showing signs of wear and tear."

On Saturday, officials stated that parallel circuits were assisting in supplying electricity to critical areas such as hospitals, along with certain neighborhoods.

"Certain provinces now feature parallel circuits, and generator units are beginning to sync with the national grid," stated Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on X.

Silvia Torres, a 64-year-old inhabitant of the Las Tunas province located in eastern Cuba, resides in an area that receives benefits from the alternative electrical systems.

"Praise be to God, we rose to illumination... a gift since I am aware that numerous regions remain without light," she shared with AFP via telephone.

On Friday night, an outage left the streets of Havana shrouded in darkness, causing residents to rely on their phones and flashlights for navigation.

Many parts of Cuba's main city experience daily electricity shortages lasting four to five hours, with disruptions extending up to 20 hours or longer in rural areas.

In February, officials halted all operations on the island for two days to prevent a large-scale power outage.

In the last quarter of 2024, two service disruptions occurred, lasting multiple days each, with one happening coincidently during a hurricane.

"Giving us strength, our nation seems to be deteriorating further," remarked 82-year-old Havana resident Xiomara Castellanos on Saturday. She expressed concern that the food in her fridge could go bad.

Nearly all of the nation's eight thermal power plants, which were mostly built in the 1980s or 1990s, face frequent breakdowns.

Mobile Turkish energy vessels along with several generators support the country’s power grid, yet the US embargo imposed from 1962 onward complicates fuel imports.

The administration is hurriedly working towards establishing at least 55 solar parks within this year -- a move they claim will meet approximately 12 percent of the country’s energy requirements.
