Mom's Heartbreak: 5-Year-Old Daughter Labeled Overweight

A mother is now "extremely heartbroken" following a school health evaluation that labeled her athletic 5-year-old daughter as being overweight.

Willow Iris Hill is an energetic and lively student who loves engaging in activities such as playtime, dance, gymnastics, and swimming.

At Blaenavon Heritage School located in Torfaen, South Wales, healthcare professionals visited to measure and weigh a child who is five years old.

However, after the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board School Nursing Team visited, her mother, Natasha Hill, was sent a warning letter regarding her daughter.

It said 'The results suggest that your child's weight is above the healthy weight range for their age, sex, and height.'

The letter then provided links to websites for guidance around nutrition and living a healthy life.

Ms Hill, who has since sharply criticized the system as 'cruel,' was informed that her daughter's Body Mass Index exceeded what was considered ideal by just two percent.

Labeling the system as 'cruel' and 'fundamentally flawed,' Ms. Hill further stated that it fails to consider her daughter's healthy way of life.

I am completely heartbroken and stunned," she stated. "BMI doesn’t consider any aspects related to one’s way of life or dietary practices.

My daughter was categorized as being overweight, yet she doesn’t carry an excess bit of fat. She naturally possesses great strength.

Labeling the BMI system as 'obsolete' and 'discouraging,' the parent mentioned they were queried about wanting some 'advice' concerning their offspring's well-being.

She added: 'But do they know she already does a lot of sport? They labelled her as overweight which is disheartening and upsetting.'

I go to great lengths to guarantee her lead a wholesome and well-balanced life. It’s important to be cautious as categorizing children can significantly affect them.

Elaborating on her daughter's 'highly energetic and robust routine,' Ms. Hill mentioned that her child participated in gymnastics sessions twice weekly and also joined various performing arts classes along with numerous other pursuits.

"We both are dedicated to offering her healthy food options and maintaining a well-balanced life for her," she stated.

I am truly troubled by what seems to be a lack of research or thoughtfulness in evaluating my child.

Currently, Ms. Hill is urging healthcare authorities to alter their strategy because she worries that the present system might harm children’s self-esteem and has initiated a petition as well.

She stated, "In order to obtain precise measurements, they must dig deeper. The institution merely adheres to the guidelines; however, their data isn’t accurate."

Most of the parents I'm familiar with believe this isn't a suitable method. We need to overhaul the entire procedure. If you don't speak up for your child, nobody else will.

The criteria for assessing children are established by Public Health Wales.

Top hotels are getting serious about wellness, according to the Global Wellness Institute, offering holistic, physical and spiritual experiences to attract health-conscious travellers

As we enter the golden age of wellness tourism - the industry is growing exponentially and will be worth US$1.4 trillion by 2027 according to the Global Wellness Institute - luxury hotel brands are looking to capitalise on the trend by creating next-level wellness experiences to lure in new customers.

"Travellers nowadays are savvy and wellness travellers even more so," says Trisha Bannister, wellness director at the newly opened Layan Life at the Anantara Layan resort in Phuket . "They are looking for places that go beyond the spa, the yoga retreat or an aesthetic-based quick fix that can be found in a lot of hotels."

In the past, health-conscious travellers would head to dedicated wellness resorts such as Thailand's Chiva-Som or The Farm in the Philippines to experience cutting-edge medical and wellness treatments. These resorts, however, are starting to face stiff competition from luxury hotels launching 360-degree experiences that embrace physical, holistic and spiritual modalities, while offering world-class hospitality and luxe accommodation.

"Hotels are keeping up with wellness resorts by amping up their offerings but, likewise, wellness resorts are borrowing from hotels' playbooks in terms of elevating guest journeys and the customer experience. Increasingly these two worlds are converging," explains Cathy Feliciano-Chon, managing partner at marketing agency Finn Partners, whose clients include The Mandarin Oriental and Marriott International Luxury Brands.

"In many cases, they're partnering with established wellness centres because that is the quickest and most compelling way they can offer wellness. Hotels, after all, are about hospitality. They'll need to bring in the wellness experts to be able to do it right," she says, citing examples such as the Four Seasons Singapore's collaboration with Chi Longevity and Six Senses Ibiza's partnership with Rose Bar, led by acclaimed wellness expert Dr Mark Hyman.

The latest trend, however, sees hotels launching and operating their own centres, which offer the best facilities, treatments and staff to go with it. Often, they cater to the local community as well as guests. Take for example, London-based wellness and longevity members' club Surrenne, launched by Maybourne Hotels at The Emory, which opened in April last year. The 2,000-square-metre space is entirely devoted to health and well-being and includes the country's first studio from global fitness guru Tracy Anderson.

Wellness brand Soneva Soul, the brainchild of Soneva Resorts founder Sonu Shivdasani, is another stand-out. It combines ancient healing modalities with modern technology to curate personalised wellness experiences that cover movement, sleep, medical services and innovative, regenerative treatments like stem cell therapies - all of which can be enjoyed while on holiday.

New on the scene is the aforementioned Layan Life, which opened its doors in September last year. Located within the grounds of Anantara Layan Phuket Resort, this medical wellness concept is housed in a 1,767-square-metre, purpose-built facility designed using biophilic principles. A short walk from the hotel's main pool and restaurant, the stunning space blends contemporary architecture with nature and would not look out of place in a design magazine with its floor-to-ceiling windows, warm neutral tones, airy spaces and abundance of natural light.

The lower level, which is open to all hotel guests as well as members, features a state-of-the-art gym, yoga and Pilates studios, meditation rooms, and a hydrotherapy area with cold and hot vitality pools, Himalayan salt sauna and steam room. The upper floor is where guests can enjoy medical and holistic services, including physiotherapy, aesthetic treatments, IV procedures, cryotherapy , a hyperbaric chamber and colonic hydrotherapy using the latest equipment and technologies.

The centre also specialises in traditional Thai medicine (TTM). Guests can have consultations with a registered practitioner, experience a range of unique treatments and take home personalised remedies from the Thai herbal dispensary.

"Layan Life was created to burst the bubble on wellness retreat models that can be restrictive," says Bannister. "[We do this] by offering an approach that is inclusive of guests no matter their age or stage of life. They can come with friends and family, or choose a solo retreat, and this is what sets us apart. They can stay with us in the resort, or locally, as suits their needs."

Personalisation and evidence-based data is a core part of Layan Life. Although pre-designed programmes are available, guests are encouraged to take charge of their own health goals by undergoing a range of diagnostic testing before choosing their treatments, from epigenetic tests in the form of hair and heavy metals testing, to skin and postural analyses and body scans.

All this can be done while enjoying the comforts typical of a holiday, be it lounging by the pool or hanging out with friends.

"[Our guests] want to be understood when it comes to their health and needs, and for us to adapt to these while they are staying with us, creating a hyper-personalised experience," says Bannister.

Interestingly, some aspects of Layan Life are also integrated into the hotel, from the specially designed wellness menu at the main restaurant to a complimentary daily activity programme that includes boxing, strength training and stretching. There are also plans to launch programmes designed to target common problem areas such as menopause and sleep.

"One of our key indicators of success is ensuring that our guests have the time and space to integrate their experiences, be present - not feel the need to tick all boxes and have a performative experience," Bannister adds.

"Being in the combined setting of both a wellness and day-to-day resort allows the guest to have a sense of normalcy."

「今回紹介する『椅子に座ったCカーブ』は、上体を後ろに倒し背中で英語の『C』の字を描くエクササイズです。その際、お腹がくしゃっとつぶれるとNG。体幹を働かせるにはお腹を引き込み、背骨を長く保った状態を維持するのがポイント。まずはニュートラルポジションを作るプレワークを行い、『椅子ピラティス』の基本姿勢をマスターしてエクササイズにトライしましょう」(村越美加先生)

●ニュートラルポジションを作るプレワーク

〈やり方〉

1.脚を腰幅に開いて立つ。腰の両脇の出っ張った骨(上前腸骨棘)に両手首を置き、恥骨の前で左右の人差し指と親指を合わせ逆三角形を作る。このとき人差し指が真下に向くようにしてニュートラルポジションをとる。

2.骨盤を立たせ、鼻から息を吸って肋骨を広げる。鼻から吐いて逆三角形を小さくするイメ―ジで、下腹部の奥を収縮させてお腹を薄くする。エクササイズ中はこの状態をキープして。

骨盤が前傾して胸は前に、お尻は後ろに突き出ると体幹が上手く使えない。

骨盤が後傾して背中が丸まると、体幹が使えずバランスが取りづらい。

●椅子に座ったCカーブ

目的と効果:上体の動きをお腹の深層部の力を使ってコントロールし、体幹を強化。

1.椅子に浅めに座り、座骨で座面を捉え骨盤を立てる。膝の間はこぶし一つ分開け、膝とつま先を前に向ける。体の前で両腕をクロスし肋骨に手を添える。お腹を引き込み、引き上げて、吸う息でCカーブを保てるところまで上体を後ろに倒し、あごと鎖骨の間はこぶし一つ分開ける。

ポイント

肋骨に手を添えたら、吸う息で背骨を伸ばし、吐く息でお腹を引き込んでおく。

2.吐く息で、上体が腕を乗り越える位置まで体を前に戻す。肩の力は抜き、腿のつけ根の力に頼らずお腹の力を使って動きをコントロールする。10回×2セット。

Centenarian's Simple Tips: Gym Workouts and Driving Key to Long Life

At 100 years old, Joseph Caminiti goes to the gym more often than many people a fraction of his age. He works out five days a week with a routine that includes cardio and weightlifting.

Caminiti lives independently with his 98-year-wife and drives himself to The Edge Fitness Club in Bristol, Connecticut, every weekday morning for a workout that lasts about an hour.

He credits the active routine for his long, healthy life.

“You’ve got to exercise. You’ve got to keep going. You’ve got to keep moving,” Caminiti tells .

“If you see me, you wouldn’t think I was 100. Everywhere I go, they (say), ‘You’re not 100 years old.’ And I say, ‘That’s what I am.’”

Most people exercising next to the energetic gray-haired fitness buff likely have no idea about his incredible life story.

Born in 1924 in West Virginia, Caminiti was part of a large family that included eight children. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps when he was 17 and served in World War II and the Korean War. The veteran is a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima , fought 80 years ago, and watched the U.S. flag-raisin g on the island.

Caminiti went on to work for many years producing bearings at a unit of General Motors located in Connecticut. He has been wedded to his spouse for 78 years.

The centenarian has few health problems and never had cancer or heart disease. That he has good genes is helpful too — his parents and some of his siblings lived into their 90s. He has one surviving sibling, a sister who is 92.

Being 100 is “like any other day in my life — 100 is just a figure. I’m just lucky that I made it this far,” he says.

Below are his suggestions for a lengthy lifespan:

Move your body

Caminiti has been involved with the gym since his childhood days. As a young boy, he delivered newspapers and would frequent a Boys Club starting at age 12.

Every weekday morning, he heads to the gym. There, he spends 30 to 40 minutes walking on a treadmill before using various weight machines to build muscle in his legs, arms, and elsewhere. To unwind at the end, he lies down on a hydro-massage table for relaxation.

"Some individuals hire a trainer to guide them through their fitness journey, but at my age, I find it unnecessary. I've frequented the gym since childhood," states Caminiti.

Nothing requires motivation for me; I simply do it because I enjoy it.

Caminiti’s son William, aged 77, recounts that a physician advised his father to steer clear of a sedentary lifestyle and keep active.

"He likes heading to the gym. He often mentions, 'I have to stay active,'" he shares about his dad.

Aid your body in maintaining wellness

Caminiti didn't smoke cigarettes. He enjoyed an occasional beer but otherwise drank little alcohol .

"He never smoked, he never drank," his son says.

When questioned about his primary advice for long life, Caminiti straightforwardly states: "Number one, don't smoke. Stay as active as possible. If you can, avoid relying on pills," he recommends.

He mentions that he doesn't consume any medication except for this one. vitamin D and B12 supplements.

Have things to anticipate with joy.

For Caminiti and his spouse, it involves a monthly trip to a casino where they engage in playing slot machines.

For her, it feels like therapy," he observes. "She really enjoys being there.

The hundred-year-old mentions that he has been visiting casinos for seven decades and has never had a significant win, yet still finds pleasure in the activity.

Enjoy food

Caminiti has maintained a hearty appetite and follows an unrestricted diet. His preferred meals consist of lobster, baked stuffed shrimp, steak, spaghetti with meatballs, and salad.

"I never shied away from any cuisine. No matter what was placed before me, I dug in," he states.

"He maintained a healthy diet, yet he also consumed nearly anything he desired," his son adds.

The centenarian has recently lost weight because of an esophagus problem, which makes it hard for food to go down — a common issue as people age — so he now has to take his time to eat and choose foods carefully.

But he still loves dessert.

“Oh, yes. I have ice cream almost every night. I eat pie, I eat cake, I eat cookies,” he says.

Stay independent

Caminiti still drives a car and he maintained his big house until a few years ago, including going up a ladder and painting it himself when he was 95.

Looking after the home eventually became too much work, so he and his wife sold the house and moved into an apartment, which they enjoy. She still cooks their meals.

“It’s a regular apartment house,” Caminiti emphasizes. “Assisted living — I don’t need that yet.”
