Richard Childress's Grandson Shakes Up RCR with Season-Shifting Off-Season Switch

This is the strongest lineup of competitive leaders we've ever seen. When Chris Rice, the president of Kaulig Racing, spoke those words, he was sincere. Throughout the NASCAR Cup Series offseason, Kaulig experienced significant staffing adjustments. One notable addition was Mike Cook, previously the chief engineer at Stewart-Haas Racing, who came aboard as the competition director. However, the biggest shift involved Ty Dillon—showing signs of promising progress.

In December 2024, Andrew Dickesen transferred from Richard Childress Racing to join Kauling Racing. He took up the position of crew chief for the No. 10 Chevrolet driven by Ty Dillon. Since Ty Dillon has yet to secure any wins in the Cup Series, doubts about his abilities have been widespread. However, a knowledgeable observer is now backing Dillon.

Could Ty Dillon be heading toward redemption?

The 33-year-old grandson of Richard Childress hasn't exactly had an illustrious career so far. From 2017 through 2023, Ty Dillon raced full-time for six seasons across various series. During his time with Germain Racing, he achieved his best finish—a third-place spot—in October 2020 at Talladega. Throughout his Cup Series participation, he managed seven top-ten placements overall. Additionally, he secured three wins in the Craftsman Truck Series and one win in the Xfinity Series. Looking ahead to 2025, changes loom large as well; notably, Andrew Dickeson will be joining him as his new crew chief. With extensive experience under his belt from competing both Down Under in Australia within the V8 Supercars Super2 category and here stateside, Dickeson brings valuable insights into their upcoming season together.

Presently, Dickeson leverages his skills to bring out the best in Ty Dillon’s potential. Driving identical vehicles in 2024, Daniel Hemric secured a 29th place in the championship rankings. According to NASCAR expert Eric Estepp. emphasized in a YouTube clip How Dillon is surpassing that achievement. Being 25th in points might seem insignificant. However, he managed a 15th place at Martinsville and a 16th place at Darlington just last week. A fresh face joined his team as well; Andrew Dickesen transferred from RCR. Currently, Ty Dillon boasts an average finish that’s almost three spots higher than before and holds a lead of four points over where Daniel Hemric stood with this particular vehicle during the previous year.

Certainly, the doubters of Ty Dillon There were many instances of this. Both he and his brother Austin have underwhelming career trajectories — last year, Austin Dillon attracted more criticism because of his performance at Richmond. Nevertheless, Eric Estepp backed Dillon, urging him to maintain his positive run. “Many people ridiculed this decision. Even I had my doubts. 'Seriously? Is Kaulig replacing an Xfinity Series champion just to give more chances to one of Pop-Pop’s offspring? Can we be certain?' However, kudos to Ty Dillon—he largely ignored all that criticism. Keep in mind, he's a seasoned driver at 33 with his own family. So far, he has silenced those critics. While finishing 25th might seem underwhelming, it actually surpasses expectations for how this season started...No DNS races so far this year; that’s significant as it means they aren’t losing valuable points—keeping that streak alive will be crucial."

Clearly, Ty Dillon is capitalizing on his chance. However, whereas Dillon excels in NASCAR, he fared extremely poorly in another game.

Dillon exhausted his breath.

Sure, NASCAR drivers enjoy letting their hair down from time to time—even when such activities push them to extremes. Recently, an interesting intersection occurred between the racing world and athletics as Cup Series racer Ty Dillon connected with Leo Neugebauer, the premier decathlete globally. Neugebauer secured consecutive national titles in track and field during his tenure at the University of Texas before representing his country at the Olympics in Paris earlier this year, where he earned a silver medal. This encounter wasn’t merely casual; rather, it felt like two different worlds colliding head-on. The meeting took place at the Circuit of the Americas race at the track in the Lone Star State during early March, where they decided to have a foot race along the track’s frontstretch all the way up to Turn 1. It was clear that Neugebauer held an uneven advantage here—still, Dillon accepted the challenge without hesitation.

Neugebauer mentioned that he attempted to provide Dillon with all the advantages he could consider. I'm dressed like a true cowboy at the moment, with my hat and boots on, fitting right in here in Texas. He called me out, but I love taking on challenges. So, I gave it everything I've got. Of course, being in boots limited me somewhat. Despite that handicap, I managed to secure the win, which is really what counts. Even though he spectacularly failed in this competition with legs rather than tires, Dillon found humor in the whole ordeal. He outpaced me in the uphill run. I kept up with him at the beginning, but since he was wearing cowboy boots and a hat, I guess he wasn’t even giving his full effort.

Even though Ty Dillon was outpaced during the run, he is burning up the track in NASCAR. With the ongoing Cup Series season, we'll have to wait and see if the Kaulig Racing driver manages to achieve his objectives.

Dillon already boasts two top-15 finishes in 2025, matching the total he secured during his previous full-time engagement with Spire Motorsports in 2023. His self-assurance was evident even before the start of the 2025 season. In February 2025, Dillon stated: For me, you know, this is the greatest chance I've had in my professional life, joining Kaulig Racing. My ambitions are quite lofty. I entered this sport aiming to claim victories in the Cup Series and contend for titles, making it to the playoffs, and I believe this is my finest shot so far. Ambitious objectives are achieving favorable outcomes, and along the way, he has silenced many skeptics.

Christopher Bell Speaks Out After NASCAR Denies Him Elite Status with Controversial Rule

NASCAR's point system stands out due to both its intricacy and contentious nature. In contrast to most global motor racing circuits, which allocate points solely based on final standings, NASCAR includes additional criteria such as performance throughout various segments of the race alongside regular race outcomes. Each event is divided into three parts, and apart from earning points for winning races, competitors can gain points after every segment concludes.

NASCAR has long prided itself on its capacity to grow and adjust over time. Since implementing the playoff structure, they've continually refined it to improve competitiveness. However, each modification brings about debate. This holds particularly true for both the playoff format and the distribution of stage points.

Last weekend, Bell etched his name in the record books by becoming the first racer to secure three back-to-back victories during the Next Gen era. Despite claiming victory in three out of four contests this season, the pilot of the No. 20 vehicle currently sits at second position in the standings. Interestingly, William Byron, with only one win under his belt, leads the pack. Can you explain how this scenario unfolded?

When wins don’t matter

Everything becomes achievable thanks to the stage points. William Byron Currently leading with 49 stage points, Byron holds the top spot, while Bell ranks seventh with only 26 points. This 23-point gap places Bell as the runner-up in the point standings, with Byron at number one. Despite both having secured one stage victory apiece, Byron consistently achieves stronger finishing positions than Bell across races, which explains their respective rankings.

The discussion around multi-stage races is quite heated among racers, and enthusiasts wondered what Bell’s stance might be. However, he shocked everybody when Bob Pockrass questioned him regarding his position behind Byron even though he had accumulated more finish line victories.

I truly believe that the current points system is excellent because it encourages consistent performance throughout the race... William Byron, who drives the same type of car as mine, has accumulated more stage points than I have. Therefore, I am satisfied with how the scoring works and realize that my failure to lead in points stems from not securing enough stage points. ” Christopher Bell stated during an interview before the Las Vegas race.

Although Bell seemed diplomatic regarding the point system, there was also a hint of frustration and resolve in his remarks, " I believe things will work themselves out as we progress through the regular season when the best competitors naturally stand out. A total of 10 points are given to the stage winner, decreasing step-by-step until reaching 1 point for the driver who finishes in 10th place. Consequently, those finishing within the top ten positions earn additional points, which BELL must aim to secure in future races to narrow the gap with the leading scorer.

Bell also suggested ways in which he has successfully adapted to the present framework to focus on victory, " I've achieved impressive finishes and secured victories in the races, but let me clarify: In Atlanta, I led just one lap, whereas at COTA, I managed to lead for nine laps. Bell’s talent for closing strong even without leading early demonstrates his tactical mindset and knack for capitalizing on opportunities during crucial moments. Although he might employ a conservative strategy initially to secure the win, navigating through staged races will be essential. It’ll be important for him not to overlook the additional playoff bonus points awarded for winning stages along the way.

Christopher Bell focusing on the broader perspective

As Fans and experts keep debating about NASCAR’s points system. One question on everybody's mind is: Can Bell finally claim the title? He has demonstrated his abilities and potential to excel at the top level. Although last year he nearly clinched the championship, will he be able to finish the job this time around?

Definitely, following Race 26, winning the regular-season points championship has been among our objectives over the past few seasons, yet we haven’t managed to achieve it. Personally, I've never secured the regular-season title – however, this remains a significant aim for me. Those extra 15 points can make quite an impact during the postseason, offering a substantial edge. Therefore, currently, I'm not overly worried about topping the point standings; nonetheless, as Races 24, 25, and 26 approach—the culmination of the regular season—this becomes a major incentive that I intend to pursue vigorously. Christopher Bell stated this when questioned about topping the points leaderboard and his aspirations for the championship.

Bell recognizes that the regular-season rankings significantly impact the overall scenario. In last year’s playoffs, Tyler Reddick secured the regular-season title and managed to remain competitive through the Round of 8 partly due to the additional 15 bonus points he earned. Conversely, Kyle Larson led in victories during the regular season but failed to advance as expected. With sufficient wins under their belt now, the No. 20 team can concentrate on achieving stage wins and accumulating further playoff points for future advantages.
