Preteen Arrested for Threatening School Shooting

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WWSB) - Law enforcement has taken a 12-year-old into custody following a sequence of incidents that originated from a fight at Port Charlotte Middle School on Thursday.

The student was taken into custody and faced charges for transmitting a written threat to carry out a mass shooting, which is considered a felony offense.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office stated that the students formed a Snapchat group chat wherein one participant mentioned, "Bring the weapon, mom, bring the weapon."

Initially stating he possessed a firearm, the Sheriff’s Office later clarified that the item was actually a BB gun. The suspect asserted that the weapon belonged to his acquaintance. At present, he remains under custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The individuals identified as Ciara Armstead, aged 36, andTerrance Carroll Jr., aged 34, were taken into custody on allegations of child endangerment and permitting a minor to have contact with weapons, according to a statement from the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office released to media and reported by them. According to investigators, the child discovered an unprotected weapon at their residence and put it in their backpack prior to heading to class. When they accessed their bag during class time to retrieve something else, they accidentally triggered the firearm, officials disclosed.

Fortunately, the incident did not become catastrophic. Major Elizabeth Scott from the Sheriff’s Office mentioned that the class instructor quickly moved all 26 children to safety as the school resource officer arrived at the location.

Officials stated that the firearm was not locked away and could be readily obtained within the residence of the family, which led to charges being filed against the parents.

The mother and father both worked with the investigators and were let go on a $5,000 bail the next day.
