Rural-Urban Migration Exacerbates BYO Water and Sewage Crisis

The Bulawayo City Council has linked the frequent sewage backups to a rise in people moving from rural areas to urban centers, leading to overburdened infrastructure.

Bulawayo city is expanding with new areas like Emganwini, Emthunzini, and the Magwegwe North Extension currently being developed.

A council report regarding the sewerage sector revealed that local officials were worried about the repeated bursting of sewage pipes, which could expose inhabitants to water-related illnesses.

The indications suggest that several sewage improvement initiatives are scheduled in the city.

Councillor Tinevimbo Maposa called on council to rehabilitate the city’s sewage reticulation system, particularly in old high-density suburbs.

“In most of these areas, the sewer system has collapsed,” the minutes read.

“Most sewage challenges are related to the water supply. If the city had constant water supply, there would be less sewage challenges.

“The sewer system was designed to have running water all the time to prevent slugging.

There are inhabitants who intentionally damage the sewage network by introducing harmful substances into the system.

Council member Khalazani Ndlovu praised the council for addressing sewage spills effectively.

"The system is overwhelmed due to migration from rural areas to cities," Ndlovu stated.

Councillor Adrian Moyo agreed. He praised the committee and department for the sewage system repair carried out by a private company in Ward 2.

“Residents should be warned against depositing wrong materials in the sewer system.”

Councillor Felix Madzana expressed concern over the breakdown of the truck used by the team covering ward 18.

Madzana said this caused a backlog in sewer burst attendance, adding that schools and other public institutions must be prioritised.

Mayor David Coltart hailed the environmental management and engineering services committee and the engineering department for dealing with sewage reticulation challenges.

As stated by the city engineer's office, Bulawayo's water and sewage systems have exceeded their useful life span.

Middle East Clash: Video Disputes IDF Account of Aid Worker Deaths

The Palestinian Red Crescent said the footage shows ambulances driving with emergency lights on, contradicting the Israeli military's account that it opened fire on suspicious vehicles.

A video provided by the Palestinian Red Crescent has raised questions about the Israeli army's version of events regarding the deaths of 15 medical personnel and civil defenders in Gaza.

The video, shared by the rescue service on X, shows clearly marked ambulances and a fire engine driving with their headlights and blue emergency lights switched on.

The Israeli army stated that its personnel had fired upon multiple vehicles when those vehicles moved toward them unexpectedly, lacking proper communication and lights.

Israeli authorities stated that the soldiers had eliminated individuals affiliated with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Other headlines indicate that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. The discussions will likely cover topics including the conflict in Gaza and tariff issues.

Below is a summary of updates from Israel, Gaza, and the broader Middle East on Saturday, April 5:

Netanyahu set to meet Trump regarding tariffs, according to reports

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is anticipated to have a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday, according to statements made on Saturday by four Israeli officials and one White House official.

The unexpected face-to-face meeting might be the first time a foreign leader attempts to discuss the removal of tariffs announced by Trump earlier this week.

Under the "reciprocal" tariff scheme, Israeli products imported into the United States will face an additional 17% duty.

Israel had already taken steps to eliminate its remaining tariffs on approximately 2% of US imports.

An official mentioned that the discussions would additionally address Turkey's increasing impact in adjacent Syria, disputes with Iran, along with the strife in Gaza.

Netanyahu's office hasn't confirmed the trip to his nation's top ally and primary trade partner. This comes as the Israeli leader continues to stay in Hungary despite facing an international arrest warrant related to the conflict in Gaza this week.

Israel deploys forces in new Gaza security zone

Israel states that its forces have been dispatched along a recently created security zone through southern Gaza to intensify the pressure on the Palestinian militant organization Hamas. This group is regarded as a terrorist entity by both Israel and the United States, among others like Germany.

A military announcement stated that soldiers from the 36th Division have been dispatched to the newly established Morag Corridor, intended to isolate the southern city of Rafah from the remainder of the area.

Initially, it wasn't evident how many troops had been sent out or precisely where this corridor was situated.

The settlement known as Morag was located between Rafah and Khan Younis, formerly inhabited by Jews.

Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proposed that the corridor should connect the two towns.

He stated that Morag would become "another Philadelphia Corridor," alluding to the area on the Gaza side of the border with Egypt farther south, which has been under Israeli control since May of the previous year.

Israel has likewise reclaimed authority over the Netzarim corridor, which separates the northern part of Gaza, encompassing Gaza City, from the remainder of the area.

The previous passages extend from the Israeli border all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Aid organization: Footage reveals instant prior to Gaza relief personnel's fatalities

Video evidence seems to challenge Israel's assertion about the vehicles transporting 15 Palestinian medics killed In Southern Gaza last month, the area reportedly lacked emergency lights, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The assistance organization stated that the video, uploaded onto X, was obtained from the cellphone of aid provider Rifat Radwan. The footage captures scenes involving medical personnel, with distinctly labeled ambulances and blinking emergency lights amid intense gun battles starting up.

The approximately 7-minute video, seemingly recorded from within a moving vehicle, shows a red fire truck and several ambulances traveling through the nighttime amidst relentless automatic weapon fire.

The cars pull over alongside each other at the side of the road, according to the Red Crescent, as two men in uniforms exit their vehicles.

It does not seem like the teams are behaving abnormally or in an intimidating way as three medical personnel exit their vehicles and move towards an ambulance that was previously attacked.

A few moments later, a burst of gunshots rings out, followed immediately by darkness.

The video clearly debunks the assertions made by the occupying forces that Israeli troops did not arbitrarily attack ambulances, stating instead that certain vehicles were moving towards them in an unmarked manner without proper lighting," stated the Palestinian Red Crescent. "This evidence reveals the actual events and discredits these misleading accounts.

Among those who died were eight employees of the Red Crescent, six members of the Gaza Civil Defense Agency, and one employee of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

The Israeli military claims that their troops did not arbitrarily target any ambulances, maintaining that they shot at individuals described as "terrorists" who were advancing toward them in "vehicles of suspicion."

Physicians cautioned that out of the two dozen patients still admitted to the hospital, some were not yet out of danger, particularly the eight individuals whose conditions were deemed critical.

"If the injuries are severe, there isn’t much time" remaining to rescue patients in such critical condition, stated Health Minister Víctor Atallah.

He and several other medical professionals stated that the victims suffered from fractures in their skulls, thigh bones, and pelvic regions due to concrete panels collapsing onto attendees of a merengue performance at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, resulting in over 200 people being hurt.

On Wednesday evening, the government announced that they were transitioning to a recovery stage aimed at locating victims.

The iconic nightclub was filled with musicians, pro athletes, and government officials when debris started raining down onto their beverages early Tuesday. Shortly after, the rooftop caved in.

The victims encompassed merengue star Rubby Pérez, who was performing for the audience when the ceiling collapsed; ex-MLB athletes Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera; as well as Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, located in the northwest part of the country, with his sibling being the renowned seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.

Among those who lost their lives were a former UN official; Luis Solís, the saxophonist performing when the ceiling collapsed; New York City-based fashion designer Martín Polanco; the son-in-law and daughter of the public works minister; the sibling of the deputy minister for youth affairs; along with three workers from Grupo Popular, a financial institution, which included the head of AFP Popular Bank alongside his spouse.

Randolfo Rijo Gómez, who leads the nation’s 911 service, mentioned that they fielded over 100 emergency calls, including some from individuals trapped beneath debris. According to him, law enforcement personnel reached the location within 90 seconds, quickly followed by initial responders. Within approximately thirty minutes, the efforts included deploying 25 troops, seven firefighting teams, and mobilizing 77 ambulance services, as stated by him.

Authorities stated that teams utilized canines and thermal imaging devices to locate individuals, successfully saving over 180 survivors from the debris.

Initially, it was not evident what led to the roof collapsing, nor did it seem known when the Jet Set building had its most recent inspection.

The authorities announced late Wednesday that after the conclusion of the recovery stage, they would initiate an extensive inquiry.

The club released a statement indicating their cooperation with law enforcement officials. A representative of the family who owns the club informed The Associated Press that they were relaying inquiries concerning possible inspections.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works referred questions to the mayor’s office. A spokesperson for the mayor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Abandoned Diver Seeks Safety Review After Ocean Ordeal

A scuba diver who was abandoned in the sea near Perth when his vessel departed unexpectedly has applauded the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for investigating the matter.

Ian, who has had their last name omitted for confidentiality purposes, was among the two individuals saved by a nearby Rottnest Ferry Following several hours approximately two to three nautical miles offshore on March 2.

Ian stated that it was crucial for the AMSA investigation to uncover what had occurred.

"I place my complete trust in our regulator, AMSA, to conduct a thorough investigation into how and why we were abandoned by our dive boat," Ian stated.

Although it's common to look for quick solutions, I encourage everybody to refrain from making judgments until the complete AMSA report is available.

In spite of the stringent headcounts and roll-call procedures instructed by diving organizations, such incidents continue to occur.

Although the problem might have resulted from human mistake or poor communication, he pointed out that dive boat operators bear considerable accountability when it comes to ensuring divers’ safety.

He stated that when divers rely on a dive operator for their safety, they are entitled to expect that appropriate protocols will be adhered to.

Neglecting to verify each diver’s presence before departing from the location is unacceptable, and we must take away valuable lessons from this.

I am confident that AMSA's findings will aid in bolstering safety protocols and avoiding subsequent accidents.

AMSA stated in a press release issued on Wednesday that they would intervene should a violation be detected.

"AMSA places great importance on the safety of both passengers and crew members and will not shy away from taking immediate and robust measures if any violations of safety rules or protocols are detected," the statement read.

fortunate salvation by the ferry team

The ABC has learned that Ian and another individual were seen in the water by someone onboard a Rottness ferry which was heading back to Hillarys.

It is known that the divers had spent several hours underwater after the vessel they were with went back to land without them.

James Mulholland, who is the director of Rottnest Fast Ferries, stated that the men were retrieved from the water and brought to land.

The ABC was informed that one of the men subsequently went to the hospital.

The gentlemen were participating in a diving excursion organized by the Perth Diving Academy, which operates out of Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Upon being contacted by ABC Radio Perth, Perth Diving Academy director Troy Lane initially declined to comment but later stated that everyone was safe and "no one perished."

The incident mirrors the case of the American tourists Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who were accidentally remained behind during a scuba diving excursion in North Queensland way back in 1998 .

Even after an extensive search, their remains were never discovered.
