2025 Audi Q3 Review: A Closer Look at the Ultimate Urban Explorer

I reckon the Audi Q3 It’s one of those impressively solid vehicles that deserves more attention from potential buyers.

Personally, I would opt for the SUV variant, specifically the entry-level 35 TFSI model. To my mind, this is the most appealing choice as it strikes an excellent balance between functionality and power, all at a reasonable price point.

When I got tossed the keys to the car Audi Q3 Sportback 40 TFSI S line - the priciest, seemingly least practical option within the lineup before you reach the higher tiers. RSQ3 region – I was not anticipating how much I would enjoy it.

However, I went ahead with it – it’s genuinely excellent, and allow me to share my thoughts in this review.

How does the interior of the Audi Q3 feel?

The phrase that continually comes to mind when discussing Audi’s interior design is 'technical elegance,' and once more, the company has successfully achieved this with their latest Q3 series.

While it may appear somewhat less ostentatious than its German counterparts, I personally enjoy the sleek finish throughout the dashboard, the sharp angular designs, and the vibrant yet straightforward displays.

The 10.1-inch touch screen entertainment system is user-friendly due to its straightforward menu design, along with support for both wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionalities. Throughout my use of the vehicle, I encountered no difficulties when linking or disconnecting my smartphone from the system.

The sides lack physical buttons, and although there is a volume/tuning knob, it's located far beneath the climate control panel. I suppose having at least some form of tuning option is better than nothing.

When discussing the climate system, you'll find an intuitive set of climate controls and adjustments readily available. The heated seat functions also have their own dedicated buttons.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument panel offers clear and easy-to-use controls, complete with a navigational display option designed for individuals preferring to utilize the built-in GPS feature—featuring actual Google Maps images displayed directly before the driver.

The storage features include sturdy bottle holders in the door panels equipped with rubberized bottoms to prevent items from shifting. Additionally, there are cupholders located between the front seats, a built-in wireless phone charger, along with two USB-C ports situated in the same region. A compact center console bin can be found beneath the armrest as well.

The seats with leather trim provide excellent comfort; we completed several stretches over two hours without any issues – plus, both occupants can adjust their seating positions electronically.

Given the driver's seat adjusted to my height (I'm 182cm/6'0"), I have ample space to sit comfortably without my knees bumping into the rigid plastic-covered front seat. There’s also sufficient room for my toes. The best part about this being a coupe-styled car is that despite everything, I still have some headspace left above me.

My 6'4" brother-in-law didn't find it entirely agreeable, but we were aware of this beforehand.

The five-up test received some criticism regarding legroom, largely due to the impact of the transmission tunnel on rear seating area. Two people in the backseat? That’s manageable. Three? It starts to get cramped.

Nevertheless, during routine tasks when I installed my granddaughter's car seat (as there are two ISOFIX anchorages available in the rear windows and three top tether anchors), it turned out to be an ideal fit.

Passengers in the rear get directional air vents, two mesh pockets for maps or accessories, door-mounted bottle holders, a fold-down armrest complete with cupholders, and even a couple of USB-C ports for keeping devices charged.

Audi states that the trunk capacity of the Q3 Sportback matches that of the regular SUV; however, this measurement is taken up to the cargo cover. Despite this, it offers ample storage room. 530 litres of capacity.

Should you attempt to fit longer items, you may hit the capacity boundaries of the loading space. However, it is certainly spacious enough to accommodate all the baggage for a family of three on a short trip without issue.

It's fantastic to observe the adaptable boot floor – you have the option to drop it down for additional room or maintain it at a higher level to create a seamless loading area across the folding rear seats.

It includes a compact spare tire that doubles as housing for a subwoofer. Smartly, there are barriers along the edge of the trunk area ensuring the floor panel remains upright when you're reaching into the under-floor storage.

Additionally, the boot area features storage compartments on both sides; one includes a 12-volt socket, and the other houses a first aid kit.

What’s under the bonnet?

Unlike other models in the Audi lineup, the Q3 series has not yet received an update to include 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology. Consequently, it continues to use the same engine options that were available when it was first introduced.

What is the driving experience like with the Audi Q3?

Before sharing my thoughts on the 40 TFSI variant of the Q3, let me first mention that if I were purchasing one of these SUVs, I'd probably opt for the base model 35 TFSI engine instead.

I don’t require all-wheel drive, and I appreciate how the smaller engine’s free-revving characteristic offers a somewhat more engaging driving experience. It also gives the car a lighter feeling at the front end.

As mentioned, the 40 TFSI quattro variant offers greater power and agility in its handling; thus, one might opt for this version knowing they will value the all-wheel-drive capability and smoother operation.

I contend that it isn’t fully zippy enough to qualify as a true sports SUV, yet it possesses sufficient power to glide through most scenarios effortlessly. Indeed, it becomes rather lively when you press the accelerator, particularly in Dynamic driving mode, and with Sports gear selection enabled.

That being said, it might just be the only SUV someone would truly require if they're considering this type of vehicle. However, I get the sense that it appears quicker than it actually performs.

The quattro all-wheel-drive system excels at helping you accelerate through turns, and the steering has a smooth, consistent feel, resulting in an enjoyable driving experience.

The suspension performs well even when fitted with 20-inch wheels and low-profile tires — whether you're cruising through the city or traveling long distances on the freeway, it remains generally smooth and stable. However, encountering sharp-edged bumps might cause some roughness in the ride quality.

I also put the quattro all-wheel drive through its paces on an uneven surface when I served as the designated driver for a wedding in rural New South Wales. Additionally, I navigated a rough stretch near Goulburn. The vehicle cruised smoothly despite carrying five adult passengers, offering excellent stability. However, it’s worth noting that the front-wheel-drive 35 TFSI could likely manage such conditions just fine.

However, some aspects of the driving experience fall short when it comes to refinement.

Inside, the car can be noisy over rough chip-sealed roads, and at low speeds, you may notice the sounds of the drivetrain when changing gears between reverse and drive while maneuvering in tight spaces. Many other SUVs, whether luxury or otherwise, tend to isolate you better from these kinds of disturbances.

There is also considerable road noise observed across various road types, along with significant wind noise. Keep in mind that this vehicle costs around $75k as an SUV; however, it may not exude the same level of refinement found in other $75k SUV models such as the Lexus NX , for instance.

A versatile American SUV

The Ford Escape has been in the market for 25 years, which makes it one of the long-lasting entrants in the compact SUV segment. Although it hasn’t seen the same sales success as some of its rivals, the Escape has continued to be a crowd favorite for its versatility and affordable pricing structure. For 2025, the Ford Escape is better than before, offering a few different engine choices, a roomy interior, and an intuitive infotainment system.

There are five different trim levels to choose from: Active, ST-Line, ST-Line Select, Platinum, and ST-Line Elite. The base Active and ST-Line models come standard with a 180-horsepower, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine and a front-drive configuration, but all-wheel drive is optional. The three highest trim levels come with a 250-horsepower, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive. Every model comes equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

There are also hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Escape, which offer more fuel efficiency and a limited electric range. The base Escape comes standard with basic amenities, including manually adjustable cloth seats, an 8-inch infotainment display, a proximity key, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It also comes equipped with plenty of standard safety and driver-assist features.

There are also a few packages, including an Active Premium Tech package that upgrades the audio system, adds power-adjustable seats, and a power liftgate for an extra $4,370. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats, remote start, and a heated steering wheel for an extra $995. Lastly, the Tech Package includes Ford’s Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance suite, lane-centering assist, navigation, evasive-steering assist, steering assist, and a 13.2-inch touchscreen.

While you can technically opt for a base Ford Escape, add the Active Premium Tech package, and call it a day, some of the higher trim levels come with more desirable features like a leather interior, a 10-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system, and a strong engine.

The 2025 Ford Escape also has plenty of passenger and cargo space, with up to 65.4 cubic feet behind the first row. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 2,000 pounds. As for pricing, the Ford Escape starts at $29,150 for the base model and soars to $35,940 for the top-trim ST-Line Elite. The Escape’s pricing is on par with its competitors, and while it has a lot to offer, some of its competitors may be a better fit for some buyers.

2025 Kia Sportage

Although it has been in the U.S since 1995, the Kia Sportage has always been a bit of a wild card in the compact SUV segment. It was never as popular as its rivals from Japan, especially since earlier versions lacked good build quality. Nowadays, though, the Kia Sportage has come into its own. For 2025, the Sportage wears a bold design that stands out in the compact SUV crowd, but what really sets it apart is the value it brings to the table.

The base Kia Sportage LX starts at $27,390 and comes with a wealth of standard features, such as an eight-inch touchscreen navigation system, HD radio, a USB port, Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, and a 12.2-inch digital gauge cluster. Moving up the trim levels unlocks more premium features, like a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless device charging, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The Sportage is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four engine that produces 187 horsepower, but a hybrid version is also available for those who value fuel economy. Whichever powertrain you choose, front-wheel drive is standard, but an all-wheel drive configuration is also available. Compared with the Ford Escape, the Kia Sportage offers an easier way to choose a trim level since every trim is value-packed with features. However, it’s worth noting that the Sportage costs a little more when the top-trim X-Pro Prestige is chosen, as it has a starting price of $38,290, which is over $2,000 more than the equivalent Escape model.

2025 Mazda CX-5

The 2025 Mazda CX-5 stands out from the crowd with its upscale cabin, engaging driving dynamics, and refined ride quality. However, it does cost a little more than the Ford Escape at every trim level. The CX-5 comes in eight different trim levels, with the base model starting at $28,770 and the top-trim 2.5 Turbo Signature starting at $40,800. But what do you get for the money?

The base CX-5 comes standard with a 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, a 10.25-inch touch screen, and rear cross-traffic alert. The higher trim levels come with more premium features like leather upholstery, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry, and a Bose premium audio system. The highest trim levels upgrade the engine to a 250-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and add more amenities like a Nappa leather interior, ventilated front seats, and a head-up display.

In terms of interior space, the Mazda CX-5 offers a little less than the Ford Escape, with only 58.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down. However, buyers may find that the CX-5’s fun driving dynamics and high-horsepower engine are its saving grace when it comes to spending a little more for a crossover.

2025 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has been a perennial favorite over the past few decades, and it doesn’t look like buyers will be losing interest in it any time soon. What makes the Toyota RAV4 so great is its value-packed trim levels and reputation for reliability. It’s also a little more rugged-looking than others in its class, which could appeal to some buyers.

Beyond that, the Toyota RAV4’s trim level tree is easy to navigate as there are only four different trims to choose from. The base LE model comes well-equipped and starts at $29,250. For that kind of money, buyers get a 203-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, an eight-inch infotainment screen, a cloth interior, and a single-zone climate control. However, opting for higher trim levels opens up more features like dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a moonroof.

The Toyota RAV4 also sports plenty of cargo space, measuring 69.6 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down, which is a little more room than the Ford Escape. However, choosing a RAV4 over an Escape comes with a premium, as the top trim level starts at $37,555, which is a couple thousand more than the fully loaded Ford Escape.

2025 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V has been a front-runner in the SUV segment with its solid build quality, practicality, and refinement. Like the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V is easy to shop for as there are only three different gas-powered trim levels to choose from, in addition to three hybrid trims. However, they all come packed with set features at every step, which takes the burden off of adding packages like you would have to do with the Ford Escape.

The base Honda CR-V LX starts at $30,100, which is a little more than the Escape. At this price level, the CR-V comes with the basic necessities, including a 190-horsepower, 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Honda Sensing Suite of driver-assist features, a cloth interior, and smartphone integration. Stepping up to the higher trim levels unlocks features like a leather interior, a power tailgate, a larger infotainment screen, and a Bose premium audio system.

A CR-V Hybrid model is also available, which adds a 204-horsepower hybrid powertrain that can achieve up to 40 mpg in combined driving. Every trim level, except the highest Sport Touring trim, comes standard with a front-drive configuration, but an all-wheel-drive layout is available. Additionally, the CR-V boasts a good amount of cargo space, measuring a whopping 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down, which bests the Escape by about 11 cubic feet.

As for pricing, the Honda CR-V tops out at $35,000 for the top-trim gas version and $41,100 for the Sport Touring Hybrid model, which is a little more than the Escape.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, the 2025 Ford Escape is the middle-of-the-road option when it comes to pricing and value. However, it can be a little confusing when configuring the different trim levels and adding packages, which can drive up the price. Some of the alternatives, like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, which are packaged better, or the Kia Sportage, which costs a little less, can be better choices for buyers in the market for a compact SUV.

2025 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series: A Timeless Legend Revisited

It's undoubtedly a peculiar sensation to climb into the cockpit of a Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series and see two pedals and an automatic gear shifter.

Note: This review has been revised since its initial publication in February 2024. The well-established V8 turbo-diesel engine is no longer part of the lineup, and instead, the newer 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel motor now comes with a manual transmission choice.

How does the interior of the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series feel?

The vinyl seats and door panels, cleanable flooring, and rigid plastics certainly aren’t plush; however, this stripped-down cabin is designed to withstand rough treatment for many years. Thus, it’s more practical to view it from this perspective.

The stolen steering wheel taken from a HiLux can be adjusted for both rake and reach. Behind it lies a brand-new instrument panel featuring an intriguing speedometer design along with a contemporary-style trip computer positioned beside it.

The dashboard is quite shallow and has a more pickup-like design rather than an SUV, giving it a robust feel. The interior maintains simplicity with a standard display, traditional manual air conditioning knobs, and sturdy plastic materials throughout.

It has an old-school charm in numerous aspects, which makes it delightful during a short-term borrow of one week yet is intentionally crafted this way. The manual quarter windows, side windows, and mirrors are less likely to malfunction, and even if they do, they can be relatively simple to repair out in the field.

Although Toyota has included a modest touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity as an accommodation, it appears rather like an add-on accessory. Despite my efforts, I was unable to successfully operate Android Auto throughout the duration of my testing.

The automated gearshift is located beside an independent shift lever for engaging low- and high-range four-wheel drive. It also features buttons and knobs to adjust power and haul throttle settings, as well as controls for downhill assistance and trailer brake modulation.

The storage options include a compact center console between the seats, some area behind each seat, a spot roughly the size of a smartphone along the central tunnel, two cup holders, and a glove box.

What’s under the bonnet?

The 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which is used in the HiLux, has been part of the LandCruiser 70 Series lineup for more than a year. At first, this motor was exclusively paired with an automatic gearbox; however, a manual option has recently become available as well.

What is the driving experience like for the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series?

Turn the key, and what strikes you initially about the 2.8-litre diesel engine is its relative silence when idling, and how much more soothing it feels to operate using a six-speed automatic transmission—especially once you hit 110 km/h, as this taller final gear does an excellent job of keeping RPM levels low.

Across all metrics, the four-cylinder surpasses the V8. In our tests—which you can watch in the linked video—it accelerated from 0-100 km/h in just 12.7 seconds, beating the V8 by 2.0 seconds; at speeds between 80-120 km/h, it did so in 11.2 seconds, ahead of the V8 by 1.0 second; for the quarter-mile run, it clocked 18.3 seconds; and it also proved more efficient under load using a trailer dyno test.

In theory, it seems obvious, yet the V8 undoubtedly offers some advantages. The experience of shifting gears manually, the deep-throated roar, the potential for customization, along with its prestige and probable higher resale value down the line – all these elements make this car truly one-of-a-kind. Keep in mind; such an automobile won’t come around again.

When it comes to fuel usage, Toyota stated 9.6L per 100km, but my actual experience yielded around 12L per 100km during mainly highway travel, which didn’t measure up as well as advertised.

Although the engine hadn't been thoroughly broken in yet, the LandCruiser’s weight and angular design imply that it can never be fuel-efficient, despite having four wheels.

The LC70’s mechanics are straightforward and robust, focusing on off-road capability, cargo hauling, and towing rather than on-road luxury.

It features solid axles, leaf springs at the rear, and hydraulic power steering with an impressive 14.4-meter turning radius. Despite this, it’s worth noting that it comes equipped with rear disc brakes, unlike some pickup trucks which still utilize drum brakes.

The truck boasts a robust 3510kg gross vehicle mass along with a 2130kg curb weight, which leaves nearly 1400kg available for cargo space including the tray. Additionally, its 7010kg gross combined mass allows it to tow up to 3.5 tonnes while still being fully loaded with maximum payload.

For clarity, the LC70 boasts a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) that is 460kg heavier and a Gross Combination Mass (GCM) that is 1160kg more substantial compared to those of a HiLux SR cab/chassis.

The cramped cabin can lead to knee bumps against the window controls for taller individuals, yet it offers an impressive vista of the roadway thanks to the slim supports, despite the extensive hood stretching out front. However, maneuvering this sizable vehicle isn’t particularly easy due to its dimensions, absence of a rearview camera, and the cumbersome hydraulically assisted steering.

Given its slim rear track (which is 95mm narrower compared to the front), along with robust rear leaf springs and beam axles, it tends to bounce and wiggle over poor road conditions when empty. However, this vehicle isn’t meant for cruising around in pristine, like-new condition anyway...

The classic features extend to off-road driving, where the LC70 remains as the sole model equipped with manual locking hubs. You can switch these from Automatic—where they engage when the transfer case shifts into 4H or 4Lo—to Locked using a lug wrench.

You activate the 4WD using the secondary shift lever, and with a ground clearance of 316mm, along with low-range gears, locked differentials at both ends, and all-terrain Dunlop Grandtrek tyres, nothing will hinder your progress. However, comfort remains elusive due to significant head movement and cumbersome handling from the stiff steering.
