Suspect Apprehended in Aiken Following Lethal Shooting at Georgia Walmart

GEORGIA/SOUTH CAROLINA (WJBF) On April 11th, around 1:30 a.m., sheriff’s deputies from Newton County were dispatched to a shooting incident at the Walmart on Salem Road in Covington, Georgia.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, the store had been shut down for operations, with just the staff members inside at that moment.

An initial inquiry revealed that an employee left the premises, obtained a weapon, and then went back into the structure.

The suspect subsequently found someone they knew inside the store and killed them.

Later, the suspect came across another associate near the Walmart, who was subsequently shot and rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

After the incident at Walmart, the assailant broke into a home on Emerson Trail and found another person there, whom they proceeded to kill.

According to authorities, this wasn’t an active shooter scenario; the suspect specifically aimed at people they were acquainted with.

At approximately 3:55 AM, deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Interstate 20 near exit 32 eastbound following a request for help from the Georgia State Patrol in searching for an armed and potentially hazardous individual who was sought for murder charges originating from Newton County.

Following a short confrontation with the suspect, sheriff’s deputies, officers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and personnel from Aiken County Emergency Medical Services provided medical assistance for a gunshot injury sustained by the individual themselves.

The accused was taken to a nearby medical facility. None of the deputies sustained injuries.

The Aiken County investigators will lend support to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for their ongoing investigation.

This is an evolving situation.
