SEBERANG PERAI, April 12 – Malaysia needs to utilize its advantages and collaborate with other ASEAN nations to tackle the effects of the 24 percent tariffs introduced by the United States, stated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He mentioned that he had contacted nearby ASEAN countries to unite in tackling the issue.
"So we aren't tackling this challenge alone as just one nation, but rather together as a unified group comprising all 10 ASEAN nations," he stated.
Anwar further stated that Malaysia, adhering to the principle of Asean solidarity, would persist in striving for solutions to address the challenge.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that Malaysia needs to set a robust example as a peaceful and stable country.
"Peace should continue to prevail in Malaysia, accompanied by economic stability supported by transparent policies and a diligent populace," he stated during his address at the Madani Aidilfitri celebration hosted at the Picca Convention Centre in Butterworth.
“We must put an end to bad practices, laziness, delays in approvals, and corruption,” he added.
Anwar pointed out that besides ASEAN collaborations, Malaysia also sustains strong relationships with the United States, European countries, and China.
He mentioned that Penang had expressed reservations about the tariffs since its semiconductor export sector surpassed RM200 billion, with 60 percent of these exports destined for the United States.
"I have told the Penang Chief Minister that in each challenge, each crisis, we have the option to either complain and surrender or channel our efforts towards discovering solutions. We must seek means to elevate ourselves," he stated.
He encouraged Malaysians to confront challenges with bravery and determination.
"I am confident that we can achieve the changes and successes we desire," he stated.
Anwar highlighted that the nation requires these transformations to guarantee employment protection, financial steadiness, and pristine, efficient educational institutions and healthcare facilities.
Anwar had reportedly welcomed a reprieve in the tariff imposition following the US decision to pause its implementation.
