PSG vs Le Havre: Luis Enrique on Mental Toughness and Squad Mastery

categories:

On Saturday, during Matchday 30 of Ligue 1 for the season 2024-2025, Paris Saint-Germain (ranked first) will face off against Le Havre (in sixteenth place) at the Parc des Princes stadium (with kick-off scheduled for 5 PM CET). Prior to the game, Coach Luis Enrique from Paris addressed several queries during a press briefing.

Luis Enrique said, "I appreciated the mindset of my players."

Can you describe how the second half began against Aston Villa?

Overall, I enjoyed the entire match. As a Champions League qualifier, this was exactly what we anticipated. Upon thoroughly analyzing the game, I believe our performance surpassed our expectations. However, factors like emotion and the final outcome also played significant roles.

There is always space for enhancement. However, when I assess the match objectively, devoid of emotional bias or outcomes, I observed a highly valiant squad at Villa Park. The demeanor of my players was commendable too. Despite committing errors—common in football—we did have some bright spots. Improvement remains essential, yet we also had encouraging aspects.

It wouldn't be right to assume that we will always dominate our rivals or that we're considered favorites. No one at PSG entertains such thoughts. Our presence in these four semifinals is well-deserved; we were also there last year. Throughout the game, I noticed many encouraging signs, despite facing some challenging moments during the first part of the second half.

Luis Enrique: "We're not indestructible, but we never surrender."

Is PSG expected to become even more powerful next season?

(Laughing), I genuinely can’t say for certain. There was some doubt last year, but clarifying that has been beneficial. The message needs to get through though. We must persuade both the team members and supporters. Should we remain resolute, they will follow suit without hesitation. As of now, predicting our success this season remains unclear since three major trophies are yet up for grabs, such as the Club World Cup. By the time those games come around, I should have more insight to share with you.

Are you focusing on the mental aspects to understand how to respond to challenges?

No, we aim to be prepared for anything that occurs throughout the season. Handling the positive aspects is straightforward, but managing the negatives is more challenging. However, the squad has successfully navigated these issues all season long.

I appreciated how we responded following the tough period in the latter part of the game, particularly when we created opportunities to take back control. Our aim is to maintain possession whenever feasible; otherwise, our adversaries excel at their tactics. While we aren’t unbeatable, we always persevere. This determination resonates with our supporters.

Luis Enrique stated, "We have reached the semifinals and we will be facing one of the top teams globally."

Why isn’t the Strasbourg game being postponed? Is it to maintain consistency in the schedule?

Every read tends to vary somewhat, each player brings their own set of skills. Certain individuals require additional training sessions. No one strategy fits every situation. Flexibility is key. Our squad excels across various tournaments. This gives us an edge going forward. I trust my roster completely, regardless of which athletes I select.

Does having played for English clubs prior to joining Arsenal offer an advantage?

No, not a drawback either. A recognizable trend might exist among English teams. Throughout the season, we've faced multiple English clubs, such as Arsenal initially. Although they eliminated us from contention previously, we find ourselves in the semifinals now against what’s considered one of the top sides. Under Mikel Arteta’s leadership, they have shown significant improvement.

Luis Enrique: "Our objective is to create history."

Did you achieve your goals upon joining PSG?

Not yet, we haven’t achieved our goal. Ever since we got here, our mission has been to create history. For us to accomplish this, we must secure every victory, right up to claiming the trophy everyone knows about. We will leave nothing on the field as we strive to be the inaugural champions in Paris.

The crucial aspect is to reach our destination and put forth all of our efforts. Regardless of the outcomes, the team continues to move ahead persistently.

Luis Enrique stated, "A lot alters when there is a shift."

Why wasn't Warren Zaïre-Emery included in the only lineup alteration for the match against Aston Villa?

Each game requires a resolution. Many factors can be adjusted during play. Typically, we implement alterations between the 60th and 70th minutes. However, in crucial matches, my team and I must ensure with certainty that our modification will improve our chances of winning.

Many aspects transform when there’s a shift, varying positions on the field. Starting from the 65th minute, I enjoyed how the team played; we created opportunities and should have scored, but I believed in the players on the pitch.

They were crystal clear about their course of action. Had we entered overtime, I would've implemented the alterations. This scenario was quite out of the ordinary for me. Still, perhaps we sidestepped potential errors. Possibly those adjustments might have proved more beneficial. Yet one must remain steadfast in their decisions.

Luis Enrique states, "Always perform at the peak level."

What steps are you taking to get ready for Le Havre and the remainder of Ligue 1?

As always, we're making our preparations. There's an opportunity to set a new record, which serves as excellent motivation. We've already claimed the championship title, achieving our primary objective. However, I emphasize to my team that if they aspire to represent PSG over multiple seasons, they must consistently perform at their peak capability.

Le Havre will enter the game with high motivation since many things are on the line. However, the squad needs to demonstrate their competitiveness fully. This drive propels us to prepare adequately for upcoming challenges. Undoubtedly, maintaining this level of enthusiasm throughout the match could prove challenging.

Luis Enrique " Football moves at an incredible pace; things can shift rapidly. That’s what makes it so captivating."

Must you endure suffering to become competitive in soccer?

Facing tough moments doesn't imply ceasing to play; every player has an adversary as well. During the semifinals, at least one team will inevitably get knocked out and must exert all their effort to advance further. The sport moves swiftly, with situations shifting rapidly. This unpredictability is part of what makes soccer so captivating.

Yesterday, we witnessed it during the match between Manchester United and Lyon; it was sheer chaos. Such is football—these unpredictable moments are hard to control. It's all part of maturing. That’s what makes this game so thrilling.

What strategies do you use for managing players with minimal or zero experience in the Champions League, ensuring they maintain strong performances moving forward?

That's an excellent point. I have faced significant criticism throughout Europe for employing extensive player rotations. This has consistently been part of how I manage every team. There will be games when I deviate from this approach, and I receive backlash. As a coach, I place great trust in numerous players. It's crucial to have as many squad members prepared to step into starting roles as feasible. Quality playing time is essential.

Just because they haven't participated in a game, it doesn't imply I lack faith in them. It's possible for me to harbor uncertainties, but I take action solely when I am convinced.

Luis Enrique stated, "Both teams were exceptionally robust."

Is Paris more mentally resilient than Lyon?

No, that’s a common reporter’s query. You're considered mentally tough if you win and weak if you lose. However, that doesn’t apply here. When everything looked bleak for Lyon, they fought back even with one player short and changed the course of the game.

That's impressive from a mental standpoint. Afterwards, they faced challenges when taking shots down a player, especially with a defender in the box; that goes beyond just mental fortitude. Both teams displayed remarkable strength.

London Showdown: Osimhen and Lookman a No-Go for Ghana Clash

The chances of four key players of the Super Eagles playing in the upcoming friendly game against Ghana at the four-team tournament in England are looking very slim, as revealed by OwnGoalNigeria.com.

The initial match for the Super Eagles in this four-team tournament is scheduled for May 29th against the Black Stars from Ghana. This encounter follows the opening game between Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.

The timing of the match has come as an unexpected development for four crucial players on the squad, who will still be engaged with their respective clubs during the scheduled date. This situation raises concerns about them potentially skipping both the match and possibly the entire tournament.

The players who may be absent from the game are Victor Osimhen , Ademola Lookman, Maduka Okoye, and Samuel Chukwueze.

Osimhen will participate in his final match of the season on June 1st, just prior to the Super Eagles' initial fixture of the competition. This indicates he won't join up with the team until after being discharged from Galatasaray’s duties.

Additionally, Lookman’s final match with Atalanta, the Italian team, is scheduled for May 25th, which is four days prior to the commencement of the tournament. The soonest he could join up would likely be around the 26th or 27th. Moreover, his current club has requested him to use the summer break to recover from recent injuries and prepare himself physically for the upcoming campaign, as he continues to work towards regaining full fitness.

Because of their allegiance to their clubs, goalkeeper Okoye from Udinese and Chukwueze from AC Milan are reportedly contemplating sitting out the competition.

Top 10 Highest-Paid Brits Abroad in 2024-25: Kane, Bellingham Lead the Charge

Stars from AC Milan , Bayern Munich and Real Madrid include some of the most highly compensated British athletes competing overseas during the 2024-25 season.

Although most British players compete in England, Scotland, and Wales, a growing number of them have begun relocating overseas in recent years.

Based on data from Capology, we've compiled a list of the top 10 highest-paid British players competing overseas for the 2024-25 season.

10. Kyle Walker – £76,335 weekly salary

Although Walker earns £175,000 weekly with his contract at Manchester City, AC Milan has been covering just £76,335 during his loan period.

The player, who is 34 years old, lost favor with Pep Guardiola during the initial part of the season and consequently sought a transfer in the January window.

At the end of the season, Milan can choose to sign Walker for £4.3 million, but it is uncertain whether they will activate this option.

9. Eric Dier – £82,436 weekly salary

eyebrows rose when Bayern Munich signed Dier last January following the player’s limited appearances for Tottenham during his final half-year with the team.

Nonetheless, he has proven himself as a consistent player under Vincent Kompany and is poised to claim his inaugural significant title, with Bayern leading the Bundesliga by eight points at the summit.

8. Ruben Loftus-Cheek – £84,580 weekly salary

Chelsea supporters were disappointed when Loftus-Cheek left in 2023, as he had dedicated his whole professional journey to the club since joining Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a good debut season in Milan last year, but has missed the majority of the 2024-25 campaign through various injuries.

=6. Dele Alli – £91,669 weekly

Considering he hasn't played much football lately, it could be surprising to know that the ex-Tottenham midfield player continues to earn substantial salaries.

Following minimal appearances for Everton throughout his three years at Goodison Park, the 29-year-old moved to Serie A club Como in January.

Nonetheless, things haven't been entirely easy for the midfielder since his move to the Italian club.

He was shown a straight red card just nine minutes into his debut against AC Milan And has not played for Como since then.

=6. Scott McTominay – £91,669 weekly

McTominay has appeared rejuvenated since his move to Napoli, earning the same salary as Alli in Serie A.

The Scotland national team member has netted nine league goals this season, surpassing all players from Manchester United who have scored fewer times in the Premier League.

"It's impressive how well several former United players are performing. McTominay, I believe, fits perfectly into Amorim's system," Gary Lineker stated on The Rest is Football podcast.

He's exactly what they require. I understand they had to let him go due to his PSR, and he happens to be from the area, which everyone considers an absurd aspect of this specific regulation.

5. Tammy Abraham – £95,132 weekly

Following his stint in Italy over the past four years, Abraham might see a comeback to the Premier League this summer.

During his first season with Roma, the 27-year-old had the most productive season of his career, scoring an impressive 27 goals.

Sadly, he hasn't reached those figures again since then, and during the 2024-25 season, he was sent out on loan to AC Milan.

Even though he still has a few years remaining on his contract with Roma, rumors suggest a possible return to England.

4. Conor Gallagher – £143,496 weekly

Last summer, Atletico Madrid offered Gallagher a five-year deal with a weekly salary of £143,496.

Since moving to Spain, he has excelled and quickly became one of Diego Simeone’s favored players.

"It’s not always simple for English players to adjust to the Spanish league, with the language being one of the challenges… He has performed quite well in various settings and roles that aren’t necessarily his preferred ones," Simeone stated.

He will develop further; there’s significant potential for his advancement. His gameplay is remarkably strong both offensively and defensively, contributing greatly to our team.

3. Jude Bellingham – £332,112 weekly

One of the most recognizable figures in soccer nowadays, Bellingham is currently earning a weekly wage of £332,112 at Real Madrid.

This places him as the shared third-highest-paid player at Real Madrid, along with Vinicius Junior, ranking just below David Alaba and Kylian Mbappe.

2. Harry Kane – £398,599 weekly

Not surprisingly, Kane stands as the undisputed top earner in the Bundesliga, with a weekly wage slightly below £400,000.

The English team leader secured a fair salary increase from his previous earnings at Tottenham, and his agreement with Bayern remains effective until 2027.

Given that Bayern is now eight points ahead at the summit of the Bundesliga, it seems likely that he will clinch a significant title this season as well.

1. Ivan Toney earns £406,730 each week.

Although many football supporters ridiculed Toney for moving to Saudi Arabia, he can feel content knowing his finances have significantly improved as a result.

After joining Al-Ahli, Toney secured the title of the highest-paid British player globally, with earnings exceeding £400,000 each week.

It’s equally important to keep in mind that due to Saudi Arabian laws, Toney’s earnings will be exempt from taxes.

Okocha Breaks Silence: The Inside Story of His Bond with Ronaldinho

categories:
  • Jay Jay Okocha was teammates with Brazilian soccer icon Ronaldinho at the French team Paris Saint-Germain.
  • The pair are arguably two of the greatest dribblers football has ever witnessed as they showcased incredible skills on the pitch
  • Okocha has revealed his connection to the ex-Barcelona playmaker, stating that he acted as a mentor figure for him.

The former Nigeria national team player Austin Jay-Jay Okocha revealed that the Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldinho regarded him as his elder brother.

Considered among the best dribblers in football history, this duo was teammates at the French club Paris Saint-Germain from 2001 to 2003.

In 1998, Okocha inked a landmark contract with the Parisian team, whereas Ronaldinho joined them in 2001 after playing for the Brazilian side Grêmio.

Because of their comparable playstyles, rumors circulated that Okocha and Ronaldinho trained their signature moves together at PSG.

Back then, the Nigerian icon had been more firmly established, as he had made his move to Europe sooner.

Some devoted supporters took this notion a step ahead, proposing that the Super Eagles player had an impact on Ronaldinho, who seemed to adopt some of his flamboyant style.

Okocha has now shared some insights into his connection with the ex-Barcelona player, describing him as someone of higher rank.

Jay Jay informed Oma Sports:

When he joined PSG, I was already well-known in the household there, as PSG was his inaugural European club or his first one beyond Brazil. He was just 20 years old at that time.
So naturally, it takes time to acclimate and understand different cultures. Indeed, there were moments when I acted somewhat like an older brother, offering guidance and encouragement since his talents were evident to all. However, adjustment requires patience. In this process, I had my part to play, and I'm pleased that he recognized this.

Despite their comparable playing styles, Ronaldinho proved more impactful and ended up representing some of the top teams globally.

Although both players enjoyed remarkable football journeys, Ronaldinho emerged as the more accomplished one, claiming victory at the FIFA World Cup along with the Copa America while representing Brazil.

He reportedly won multiple trophies at the club level, including the UEFA Champions League, according to Soccernet.

Ronaldinho also secured numerous individual honors, such as the FIFA Best Player award, the Ballon d'Or, the UEFA Best Player distinction, and the South American Best Player accolade.

In contrast, despite winning the Africa Cup of Nations title and an Olympic gold medal during his career, Okocha continues to be highly regarded around the world.

Although the unpredictable playmaker didn’t participate for top-tier global teams, he left his imprint at PSG, Fenerbahce, Eintrcht Frankfurt, and Bolton.

Okocha remembers the day he encountered Oliver Kahn.

Diwida >.ng Earlier reports indicated that Nigerian football icon Jay Jay Okocha mentioned having encountered the remarkable Oliver Kahn some years following his memorable humiliation of the German goalkeeper.

Okocha netted one of the most memorable goals in history, effortlessly maneuvering past five defenders and the goalie before coolly slotting it home.

Upon getting a pass in a risky zone, he pretended to shoot before quickly cutting backward, causing Kahn to end up flat on the ground.

Man Utd's Chaotic Chaos: Spanish Press Mock Amorim's 'History-Laden' Red Devils

Manchester United’s victory against Lyon served as the 'ideal representation' of the present version of the Red Devils, described by a Spanish publication as a team with 'a richer legacy than gameplay.'

AS On Friday, they published an article anticipating United's forthcoming Europa League semi-final match against Athletic Bilbao and concluded that Athletico Bilbao does not pose much of a threat to Ernesto Valverde’s team.

Some argue that the present group of United players can achieve both greatness and downfall due to their lack of 'settled structure.' They become particularly 'volatile' during disarray compared to regular gameplay. Consequently, their victory against Lyon perfectly encapsulates what manager Ruben Amorim aims for with his team.

They reserved commendation for 'metronome' Bruno Fernandes and a 'revived' Alejandro Garnacho, yet they are not at all satisfied with an offense lacking 'substantial power.'

The biggest risk is believed to be that Manchester United has more at stake since the Europa League is their sole path to qualifying for the Champions League, whereas Athletic Club aims to secure a spot through other avenues, such as their current position in La Liga.

The report also described the impending confrontations as an opportunity for winger Nico Williams to showcase his skills, suggesting he could be a top contender for Arsenal’s list this coming summer. It is believed that Williams remains highly favored by the club. Manchester City are said to be interested as well. in the 22-year-old.

Williams stated on Friday that "all kids dream of playing at Old Trafford," and further noted, "Our aim is to secure victory in the Europa League and then make a big impact in the Champions League next year. Step by step. In my opinion, our strategy of keeping a low profile is ideal. Everything we're doing right now is working out great, and we plan to keep up this momentum all the way to the finals."

The squad is phenomenal, and we're set to commemorate this win. San Mamés truly merits it above all others. We've performed exceptionally well to make it to the semifinal we aspire to reach. Just one more stride remains until the finale, and ideally, we'll succeed.

His comments follow reports suggesting he might significantly disappoint Arsenal by choosing not to join the club at the Emirates and instead extending his contract with Bilbao. a move 'that nobody expected' .

According to the report, 'in an unexpected turn of events', Williams is now seriously considering extending his contract and remaining with the team in Bilbao.

Athletic Club is currently negotiating a new contract with Williams. This agreement would modify his release clause and result in "a significant increase" in his weekly wage, which presently sits at £200,000.

It's believed that Williams hasn’t ruled out the possibility of departure in the future but is open to remaining temporarily provided that a competitive project is assured.

I Secured Africa's Best Player Title – Okocha

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha believes it was unfair for him not to have won at least one African Player of The Year Award, noting that he did enough during his heyday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Okocha is regarded as one of the most skilful players to have played football and was active for Nigeria between 1993 and 2006. He was a key part of Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON-winning and World Cup team.

He netted 15 goals in 75 matches for Nigeria.

Before retiring in 2012, his club career led him to play in Germany, Turkey, France, England, and Qatar. Okocha had an impressive journey with teams such as Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahce, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers, amongst others.

Despite winning various individual accolades, the midfielder notably failed to secure the title of African Player of the Year during his prime years.

"I mean, at one point, I felt like I had done enough to secure victory, you know? But ultimately, I must accept that perhaps this is just how life goes; sometimes you can't have everything," Okocha stated to Oma Sports TV.

Perhaps it just wasn't destined to happen, yet naturally, I felt entitled to win it at least once. You see, when you consider the roster and some of those who claimed victory during my tenure, I would concur with you that it indeed seemed unjust.

In 1998, he finished as the runner-up, with Morocco's Mustapha Hadji placing first – this was his strongest chance at winning the award.

Four years later, he secured the third position behind Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba, and this order was replicated in 2004 even though Okocha had won the award for best player at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia earlier that same year.

Even without claiming prizes, the athlete takes pride in being acknowledged for who he is.

The most crucial aspect for me is being recognized for who I truly am and remaining memorable. Honestly, I may not have claimed numerous titles, yet I've touched people's hearts—a feat which I consider invaluable. Therefore, I refrain from comparing myself with others since I'm aware of where my journey began and the accomplishments I’ve earned; this awareness allows me to value immensely all that football has bestowed upon me.

French Outlet: Morocco's U-17 AFCON Triumph Leads African Football’s ‘Golden Generation’

On Monday, Foot Mercato, a specialized outlet, reported that Morocco’s exceptional talent pool has propelled them to the summit of African football. This achievement follows the Atlas Lions' triumph over Mali in the U-17 AFCON finals, which was decided through an exciting penalty shootout.

The 2008-2009 cohort created history by being the first ever to claim victory in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), noted the publication.

Boasting an impressively strong lineup, the team spearheaded by ex-Moroccan international Nabil Baha, known for his time at Montpellier, was regarded as one of the top contenders in the competition.

The head coach had confidence in multiple gifted athletes, beginning with the squad's standout player Abdellah Ouazane, whose pivotal contributions from central midfield included 2 goals and 2 assists throughout the tournament.

Morocco also had a dependable goalkeeper during crucial times named Chouaib Bellaarouch. Having been trained at the well-known Mohammed VI Academy, he demonstrates significant room for growth. The French website reports that several clubs in France have shown interest in bringing him over this summer.

Ilies Belmokhtar is another notable performer. The talented AS Monaco winger consistently impressed throughout the game. From the first match onwards, he shone brightly and was arguably Morocco’s most effective offensive player, as mentioned by the source.

This Moroccan squad also includes several notable talents poised to make their mark in coming years. A standout among them is Ibrahim Rabbaj, often referred to as the "Moroccan Messi," playing for Chelsea. According to Foot Mercato, he is considered a high-potential player with the potential to emerge prominently in the near future.

A comparable situation involves Elyes Ghrissi, a midfielder with Auxerre. After receiving his first call-up early this year, he swiftly secured a starting position during preparatory games and cemented himself as an essential player for the team’s campaign. His potential continues to attract significant attention from talent scouts across Europe, according to Foot Mercato.

Nigerian Court Rules Football Federation and Club Negligent in Chineme Martins' Death

categories:

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has determined that the Nigerian soccer league, the federation (NFF), the match commissioner, and Chineme Martins' club were at fault for the player's demise in March 2020 due to negligence.

According to a statement released by the global footballers' union FIFPRO on Thursday, this is what was indicated.

Martins fell lifeless during a league game with Nasarawa United in March 2020 and passed away shortly after; he was just 25 years old.

The court ruling said it was “reprehensible” that Martins was allowed to play without complete medical tests and without the provision of adequate medical facilities at Lafia Township Stadium.

The club has been instructed to compensate Martins' family.

"The court has stated and decided that Nasarawa United, the league managing body, and the NFF failed to consider my sibling's safety, health, and well-being, leading to his demise," expressed Martins' brother Michael.

“I hope that the appropriate medical provisions are put in place for Nigeria’s footballers going forward, so that no family has to endure the pain we have suffered," he continued.

A report released on the NFF website that same year pointed out that Nasarawa United lacked both a medical doctor and a physiotherapist during the match and also noted that there was an absence of a functioning ambulance at the stadium when the accident occurred.

Furthermore, Martins did not have an echocardiogram conducted at the beginning of each of his three seasons with the team.

The legal team from FIFPRO assisted Martins' family in pursuing their negligence lawsuit.

10 Legendary Players Who Now Own Football Clubs: Modric, Beckham, Ronaldo & More!

Luka Modrić has joined the ranks of top-tier soccer stars who have invested in clubs, turning this trend into a more frequent occurrence.

The realm of football club ownership is notoriously unstable; however, there are several prominent instances of well-known figures in the sport thriving by investing and managing these teams successfully.

These are 10 iconic athletes with ownership interests in teams.

Luka Modric

Modric has reached an agreement to join Swansea City’s ownership group in April 2025.

The 39-year-old’s investment in the Championship club will not impact his playing career, with the midfielder keen to continue playing for Real Madrid beyond this season.

Modrić boasts considerable familiarity with British football, having played 160 matches for Tottenham Hotspur prior to joining Real Madrid in 2013.

His upcoming appearance in South Wales will usher in a fresh chapter for the club as he becomes part of Swansea’s new ownership group.

In November, Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan's eight-year tenure in leadership concluded as they offloaded their controlling stake to Andy Coleman, along with co-owners Brett Cravatt and Nigel Morris, and entrepreneur Jason Cohen.

David Beckham

Even before Beckham retired from football following his last season with Paris Saint-Germain, rumors circulated in the press about his potential investment in an MLS team and his plans for a business venture after hanging up his cleats. The brand he built was far too substantial for him to confine himself to roles like sports commentary or coaching.

Following the establishment of Salford City alongside his fellow Class Of ‘92 alumni and Singaporean businessman Peter Lim, he went on to found an MLS team. Despite initial delays, Inter Miami CF is now thriving—boasting one of the most impressive collections of star players in contemporary MLS history.

It traces back to when he played for LA Galaxy.

It is said that he accepted a significant reduction in his wages from what he earned at Real Madrid. However, he has taken full advantage of a stipulated provision in his agreement that enabled him to acquire an expansion team for merely $25 million.

By 2025, Inter Miami's worth is projected to exceed $600 million.

Now he can see himself as the person who brought Lionel Messi to America, marking the nation's biggest signing since his own arrival... or tracing back even farther, to when Pele played for the New York Cosmos.

"It's simply the impact that Leo has on both the game and the world," Beckham said to Jimmy Kimmel.

One of the reasons we aimed to bring him to America was to motivate the upcoming generations. This was always part of my vision. Of course, I intended to welcome him both as an exceptional athlete and admirable individual. Having faced him multiple times myself—twice being particularly fortunate—I have long been his admirer and followed his career closely.

And my intention was always to add what I consider the best player ever to grace the sport, to our squad. Fortunately, it came to fruition.

Didier Drogba

You likely recall the final chapters of Drogba's illustrious career. His time playing in Turkey and China was bookended by his triumphant comeback at Chelsea, leading to an impressive stint with the Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer.

However, if we were to quiz If you followed every team Senegal's star player was part of throughout his career, you might overlook his stint at Phoenix Rising. Following some time without a club, he joined the USL side based in Arizona and acquired a minor ownership interest in the team.

We've come across the concept of a player-manager, though it has become less common nowadays. However, the idea of a player-owner is much rarer, and from what we know, Drogba was the pioneer in this regard.

Before retiring in 2019 after scoring 17 goals in 26 matches for the team, Drogba concluded his playing career. Despite owning part of the club presently, they have not managed to secure entry into MLS so far.

N’Golo Kante

Following his departure from Chelsea during the previous summer, Kante surprised many in the soccer community by buying into and taking over as chairman of Belgian third-division side Royal Excelsior Virton.

The club stated, "It is clear that Flavio is immensely delighted about the opportunity to transfer the club’s key responsibilities to N'Golo Kante."

“[He is] a player of great class, not only for his footballing qualities but also and above all for his unanimously recognised human qualities.”

We have no objections. However, his choice to accept Saudi funding was somewhat disheartening.

Royal Excelsior Virton concluded their season at the 10th position in the Belgian National Division 1 during the 2023-24 campaign.

Paolo Maldini

Beckham isn't the sole European Cup champion investing in Florida's sunny real estate. Maldini preceded Beckham by establishing the USL team Miami FC as early as 2015.

"When I established Miami FC, Paolo assisted us in boosting the club's visibility, and he was instrumental in bringing Alessandro Nesta aboard as our very first head coach," said Miami FC owner Riccardo Silva. Transfermarkt .

In recent times, the renowned Italian defender has stepped away from his current role and refocused his efforts on AC Milan as their technical director.

"There were never any intentions to establish official connections between the two teams [Miami and Milan], despite both being passions of mine. However, I wouldn’t dismiss the possibility for the future," Silva added.

It seems less probable now since Maldini has stepped down from his position as Milan's technical director due to conflicts with the club's management board.

Ronaldo

O Fenomeno holds an 82% controlling share in the Spanish team Real Valladolid, which has been fluctuating between La Liga and the Segunda División over the past few seasons.

The footballer, who has won the World Cup twice, had an ownership interest in struggling Brazilian club Cruzeiro. However, he decided to sell his shareback in April due to the team’s ongoing administrative issues.

My response will be brief; Valladolid comes next," Ronaldo stated at the time. "After selling both Cruzeiro and Valladolid, I plan to take some time off.

Nevertheless, he has recently reversed his decision and declared his intent to remain the owner of Valladolid, apparently because there were no attractive offers forthcoming. As it was recently reported, he rejected a €28 million proposal from the construction company Inexo.

Gerard Pique

Despite still being an active player for Barcelona, Pique was often touted as a potential future club president due to his entrepreneurial mindset and involvement in various sports ventures.

He is presently being investigated due to allegations regarding his possible role in illicit payments associated with moving Spain’s Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.

He was also engaged in tennis; however, in January 2023, the International Tennis Federation opted to terminate its agreement with the former footballer’s firm responsible for organizing the Davis Cup after just under half a decade.

In addition to his E-Sports team, he also has the seven-a-side Kings League project, which joins YouTube personalities with former professionals.

Phew.

In terms of football – the real thing, not the kind watched on screens or promoted by influencers – he also owns a team in a lower division called FC Andorra. He acquired the club back in 2018.

In the previous season, they concluded at the 21st position in the Segunda División, which led to their demotion to Spain’s third division.

Should we doubt the achievements of this four-time Champions League champion... however, it appears that his business endeavors might not be faring as well.

Thierry Henry

"One of the objectives is to invest in the Como community and foster collaboration with locals through programs aimed at generating job opportunities," Henry stated to journalists during a press briefing in August 2022.

Como has an interesting past; it is renowned for the beauty of both the city and the lake. Hopefully, it won’t be long before it also gains recognition for its football.

Two years ahead, and Como have risen to become a Serie A club, with Henry’s former Arsenal teammate Cesc Fabregas both managing from the bench and holding a stake in the club. This certainly shows they are meeting their objectives.

The present coach of the France U21 team holds just a minor shareholding in the club, yet when it comes to rationalizing periods spent enjoying the stunning views around Lake Como, this serves as quite an appealing excuse.

Observing a diverse team that includes Pepe Reina, Alberto Moreno, Andrea Belotti, and Patrick Cutrone? Even more enjoyable.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Speculative articles from excitable tabloids suggested that Zlatan Ibrahimovic could potentially end his playing career in Sweden with Hammarby FC following his appointment as co-owner of the club in 2019.

After departing from LA Galaxy, he became a free agent. Indeed, he made an emotional comeback that same year... but this time it was with AC Milan at the San Siro, where he netted an additional 37 goals, claimed yet another Serie A title, and continued playing well into his forties.

Technically, joining Hammarby wouldn't have amounted to coming back home—something agitated supporters of his local team Malmö would quickly point out.

In response to the Hammarby news, they tried to set fire to his statue near their stadium. Ouch.

Hammerby came in second place in the Swedish Allsvenskan league standings last year... yet they were nine points behind the winners, Malmö. Wonder what Ibrahimovic thinks about that.

Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe acquired 80% of the shares in Caen for less than €20 million during the summer of 2024.

One of several teams in French soccer, this Ligue 2 club is presently facing financial difficulties.

We've seen players like N'Golo Kanté, Thomas Lemar, and Raphael Guerreiro excel after their time at Caen, and it will be intriguing to witness how Kylian Mbappé can propel the team forward.

"Honestly, for an entire month, people were discussing this with me, yet I remained skeptical," ex-coach Patrice Garande stated. La Parisien .

This is remarkable news. Primarily because of the financial security it brings. Additionally, it enhances the club’s reputation significantly. Aligning oneself with the world’s top player undoubtedly serves as a major boost.

'We understand Mbappé's ambitions and his drive for success. If he joins our team, it won’t be a casual decision; it will definitely be with the intent to win and consequently create a squad that helps this club regain its place among Europe's top clubs.'

Football Leaders Respond to Death of Christian Chukwu

On Saturday, football representatives in Ibadan collectively stated that Chukwu's passing has created a significant void in Nigerian football.

A former coach of the Super Eagles and once an international player himself, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, merely stated that Chukwu’s passing away at the age of 74 was truly unfortunate.

Onigbinde stated that nobody anticipates such news because, in his view, the person is still young.

A ex-midfielder of the Super Eagles, Mutiu Adepoju, referred to the recently departed captain of Rangers International as both esteemed and unpretentious.

Each player enjoyed being around him. When we were just kids and still growing up, we used to watch him play as a skilled Rangers member.

"I had the privilege of playing under him as the coach of the Super Eagles," Adepoju said.

Adepoju believes that merely uttering a casual farewell to the individual widely known as Chairman would fall short of being adequate.

Hours could never suffice to convey the sorrow engulfing the global football community at present. He served as motivation for countless individuals, a benchmark for yesteryears, contemporary times, and forevermore.

Chairman showed great fondness for his teammates, particularly for his players from a coaching perspective.

The former player mentioned that soccer fans would recall him based on his legacy and accomplishments in the sport.

"He will always remain unforgettable, and his legacy will endure indefinitely within every one of us who cherishes the game," he stated.

He implored God to bestow blessings upon the departed soul and comfort his relatives, as well as the Enugu Rangers International team and Nigeria's football community.

At the same time, prominent sports commentator Tayo Balogun stated that the deceased football icon exemplified true sportsmanship.

Balogun characterized the deceased Chukwu as diligent and consistently brimming with immense enthusiasm for the national Nigerian squad.

He was a leader who set an exemplary standard.

"In his era, he led a national team where all the players beneath him were eager to represent Nigeria genuinely. Chukwu became a national icon for Nigeria. He fostered a productive competition between Enugu Rangers Football Club and Shooting Stars Sports Club," Balogun further explained.

Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74, was an eminent figure in Nigerian football.

In 1980, he led the victorious Green Eagles team that secured Nigeria's inaugural Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship, thrashing Algeria 3-0 in the finale held at the National Stadium in Lagos.

Later, he became the head coach of the Super Eagles and led the team to a third-place finish at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

FG Implements E-Visa Automation on May 1st: Interior & Aviation Ministries Unite for Enhanced National Security

ABUJA The federal government, via the Ministry of Interior along with the Ministries of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has established May 1st as the start date for implementing the new policies related to E-Visas, automated landing cards, and departure card digitization across the nation.

On Wednesday, during a joint inter-ministerial press briefing in Abuja, both ministers—the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo—revealed that their collaborative efforts, particularly with the implementation of the Advanced Passenger Information System and e-gate solutions, resulted in the apprehension of several blacklisted foreign nationals who were subsequently turned over to INTERPOL.

Providing clarity, Ojo-Olujimi expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Aviation and mentioned that both parties have concurred on establishing a joint task force. This team will work towards ensuring the successful implementation of the E-Visa system as well as the automated processing of landing and departure cards.

The program commences on May 1, 2025, with an additional three-month grace period before the comprehensive enforcement and execution begin on August 1.

There will be an amnesty allowing individuals with visa overstay issues or those who have violated immigration laws to step forward and legalize their status by reporting to the immigration offices.

Following the implementation of the AP system, we faced another challenge with the E-Gate. We extend our gratitude to FAAN, who serves as our landlord, for their assistance. Currently, both our facilities in Lagos and at the Abuja airport boast fully operational E-Gates, providing convenience for Nigerians while enhancing border security even further. Today, we gather to address the next phase—introducing the E-Visa alongside an automated landing and departure card process.

We recognize that previously, we've used exit and landing cards in a traditional manner, where individuals needed to complete paper forms. However, considering that Nigeria is home to 230 million exceptional people, it’s essential for us to be at the forefront of technological advancement. Therefore, we plan to automate these processes starting May 1, 2025.

He went on to say that the landing and exit cards, which are complimentary, must be completed online prior to your departure and shown to airline staff as part of the boarding process.

Beyond this, we will implement additional measures that we can clarify further at a later time. We've also concurred that the Electronic Visa will simplify entry into Nigeria while improving national security. Naturally, these applications will be submitted online.

“There is a centralized visa approval centre already at Nigera Immigration Headquarters. Officers have been trained, well-equipped, and solution-integrated to all major criminal record systems in the world, Interpol and the rest. And of course, there will be better background check in terms of people coming into Nigeria.”

“We are also looking at removing bottlenecks and also making sure people can get visas to Nigeria without lobbying anybody to come into Nigeria. We want to open our borders without compromising national security for people to come and explore the beauty of the land called Nigeria,” he stated.

On his part, Keyamo assured that the automation will be seamless.

What the entry and exit card signify, along with what my brother is explaining, is that upon arriving in the country, you fill out an entry form online. This process is automated. Therefore, once they enter your passport number into the system, all relevant information appears instantly—such as the date of your arrival, the type of visa used for entry, and the duration of your authorized stay.

The system recognizes it immediately, retrieves it, and proceeds. As you depart from your home country, the initial point you reach at the border exit is typically the check-in counter of a private airline. This is where the NCA becomes relevant.

When returning to your home country as a foreigner, they might ask for your exit card. This is their top priority. Without it, you won’t receive a boarding pass. Once you complete your exit card and input your passport number, information such as when you entered the country appears. Details like where you received entry stamps and for how long become visible. If these records show an overstay, following the protocols set by the NCAA, the airline will deny boarding and direct you to immigration authorities.

What we are accomplishing today serves as another proof of this government’s commitment to encourage collaboration among major ministries with overlapping responsibilities.

"The aviation ministry and the interior ministry, since day one, have made a decision to work together collaboratively, and we've been accomplishing this without interruption," he declared.

IPU: Kalu Urges Strong Post-War Recovery Plans for Africa

Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has called on countries of the world to take as a priority, the development and implementation of robust frameworks for post-war recovery.

He highlighted that this strategy is not just morally essential but also strategically crucial for ensuring enduring peace and stability in areas devastated by conflict.

As he puts it, the world can only aspire to turn the teachings of history into a strong basis for a tranquil tomorrow once this particular aim has been realized.

The Deputy Speaker made the call in a proposal titled l; “The Imperative for Strengthened Post-War Management” which he submitted at the ongoing 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Rt . Hon. Kalu, who was named a co-rapporteur to the IPU’s Standing Committee on Peace and International Security is to speak on “The role of parliaments in establishing robust post-conflict management mechanisms and restoring a just and lasting peace”

Alongside A. Al-Zu’bi of Jordan and Ms. F. Belhirch of Netherlands, he noted the devastating effects of conflicts and wars in Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

His words; “Despite multiple peace agreements, sporadic violence has persists due to inadequate post-conflict reconstruction and weak governance structures.

“The failure to establish a resilient peacekeeping and reconstructionframework has left Sudan vulnerable to renewed conflict, Economic marginalization and weak institutions.

This disappointing setback has hindered sustainable peace even more, highlighting the necessity for improved systems in managing the aftermath of war.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has faced conflicts since the 1990s, encompassing both the First and Second Congo Wars. These wars were dubbed 'Africa's World War' because of their extensive scope and the participation of several nearby nations.

The conflicts have led to more than 5 million fatalities, largely because of illness, hunger, and aggression. The area still faces intermittent fighting, which hinders years of tenuous reconciliation attempts.

Inadequate post-war leadership, widespread corruption, and lack of effective conflict-resolution methods have hindered enduring stability.

The global community's failure to implement complete peace agreements has led to a situation where ongoing violence has become commonplace.

The progression of history from World War I through regional conflicts in Sudan and the DRC illustrates an ongoing trend: the inability to create robust post-conflict governance structures leads to repeated episodes of violence and instability.

To disrupt this pattern, the global community, working alongside national governments, needs to focus on developing and putting into action strong structures for post-war recuperation.

Kalu, who is also the coordinator of the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) — an initiative focused on restoring peace in southeastern Nigeria using non-violent methods — emphasized that the experiences from conflicts in countries like Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and others around the globe show that achieving victory in combat is merely the initial phase in establishing lasting peace.

For lasting peace, Kalu thus called for enhanced institutions, economic rebuilding, social harmony, and integration as restorative measures along with international assistance.

Resilient governance systems can effectively handle post-conflict situations and promote inclusive political participation.

The full execution may ensure economic resurgence along with the reconstruction of infrastructure, generating employment opportunities, lessening disparities, and fostering communication between conflicting parties and communities. Consequently, this process could help mend longstanding rifts and bolster national cohesion.

Creating systems that include formerly marginalized groups within the political framework can be achieved through policies ensuring their involvement in governance and society. This approach can alleviate negative sentiments and foster national cohesion.

By integrating these elements, we not only uphold the tenets of fairness but also convert past resentments into chances for comprehensive governance," Kalu stated. "Furthermore, this approach leverages international bodies to offer continuous backing, oversight, and responsibility to guarantee the complete implementation of peace accords.

McCarthy Under Fire: South Africa Coach Labels Players as Lacking Ambition

  • Benni McCarthy thinks that South African players possess significant talent, yet their insufficient drive stops them from competing at leading European football clubs.
  • Following his tenure at Manchester United, the ex-Bafana Bafana forward took over as the head coach of Kenya's national squad.
  • Ever since, this 47-year-old individual has been at the helm of Harambee Stars for their participation in two significant World Cup qualifying matches against Gambia and Gabon.

Benny McCarthy, the 47-year-old head coach of Kenya's national squad, is encountering backlash following his assertion that South African players do not possess sufficient drive.

The ex-Manchester United coach took over as the Harambee Stars manager at the start of March.

Up until now, the South African international has coached two important games for the Kenyan national side, facing off against Gambia and Gabon.

What McCarthy commented on the South African players.

During an interview with NTV, McCarthy talked about the condition of South African soccer, mentioning that although South Africa boasts a wealth of talented individuals, the drive and aspiration among the players are quite minimal.

"South Africa boasts immense talent with players emerging from all corners, yet they have rather modest aspirations," McCarthy stated.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers player revealed that during his youth in South Africa, his dream was to represent Manchester United, and he put in immense effort to make that happen.

During my childhood in South Africa, my ambition was to become a player for Manchester United. I dedicated myself to working as diligently as possible towards this dream, but if I didn't succeed, I resolved to at least compete against them.

McCarthy stated that should he fail to join United, he would strive to compete against them anyway, viewing this as a crucial step just shy of his primary objective.

The former Orlando Pirates player mentioned that although South African footballers exhibit remarkable skill and hold great promise for success, numerous players prefer remaining in their home nation.

He highlighted that they hesitate to step outside their comfort zones, viewing this reluctance as a way of undervaluing themselves.

They prefer staying put as they're comfortable where they are, but I believe this is undervaluing oneself since to excel, one must compete with top-tier opponents.

Audience responses to McCarthy's comments about South African players.

Patrick Shepard reacted,

He doesn’t understand what he’s discussing. It’s not about being at a specific location; it’s about having a platform where one can showcase their skills. In their home country, South African players have such platforms, so why worry about Europe? They prefer avoiding the racism prevalent elsewhere. Other nationalities also feel frustrated due to how they’re treated abroad, leading them to act aggressively or engage in altercations during games. Got it?

Beth Mark said,

He ought to motivate the Kenyan players at his current workplace; indeed, moving to Europe could be advantageous, but our focus is on developing Africa so that we can restore greatness to this continent.

Luvuyo Yabo said,

He needs to concentrate more on his responsibilities as the Harambee Stars coach. With two games played and no victories, he has reason for concern. If those European clubs continue to undervalue our players and make absurd offers, these athletes won’t have any prospects.

Nathi Nkosinathi remarked,

US and Iran Set for Talks to Revive Nuclear Negotiations in Tehran

Iranian and U.S. officials are set to convene in Oman’s sultanate this coming Saturday for an important diplomatic session aimed at addressing Iran's swiftly progressing nuclear activities.

Even though an accord seems improbable, the consequences remain significant as these two nations approach four decades of hostility towards each other.

The strain between Washington and Tehran has intensified over the past few months. US President Donald Trump has often warned of potential air strikes aimed at Iran’s nuclear capabilities unless an agreement can be made.

Iranian authorities are progressively cautioning that they might opt to develop a nuclear weapon using their supply of uranium refined to nearly weapons-grade levels.

These talks hold particular significance against the backdrop of the continuing strife in the Middle East. Leading Iranian authorities have stressed that Tehran approaches these discussions with genuine seriousness.

Iranian authorities have emphasized that Tehran "will not agree to abandon its nuclear program "in pursuit of peaceful objectives" as part of any possible accord.

Ali Shamkhani, who serves as the political advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader, stated that the issue might be settled if the US demonstrated sincerity and exhibited genuine political commitment.

U.S. authorities have extended an invitation to Tehran to negotiate a pact aimed at achieving stability, underpinned by the notion that " peace equals strength."

Oman has been practicing discreet diplomacy for many years, allowing it to take on the crucial role of mediator.

Its distinctive history, population, and closeness to Iran have rendered it essential for Western interests as numerous discussions concerning Iran have been conducted here.

Byo Needs $38K for New Refuse Trucks: International Edition

The mayor of Bulawayo, David Coltart, has disclosed that the city council requires $38,000 to ensure all their garbage collection trucks are operational.

At the Bulawayo Economic Development Conference held yesterday, Coltart stated that the city must get its vehicle fleet up to standard.

"I recently received a report from our cleaning department stating that we require $38,000 to ensure all of our waste collection trucks are operational," Coltart mentioned.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the stark truth of our current situation.

We allocate $18,000 for this conference, yet our city has uncleared trash lying around.

He stated that the council needed to alter its priorities.

"And all we need to get all our compactors operational is $38,000," he stated.

“This clearly indicates where our priorities stand. That needs to shift.”

“Our priorities have to change and note that I’m not demeaning this conference.”

Last week, council commissioned refuse compactor trucks worth US$602 400 in a bid to improve waste collection and maintain a clean environment.

Council officials said Bulawayo requires 17 additional refuse trucks at an estimated cost of US$2,56 million.

Beyond cleanliness, the city is also working to streamline its bureaucratic processes to attract investors.

"If we lack a clean and well-managed city, we won't be able to draw the necessary investments to reach our objectives," he stated.

The city has been struggling against illegal dumping, refuse that remains uncollected, leading to waste accumulating in densely populated regions, thereby exacerbating the deterioration of the urban environment.
