PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Tom Homan, who serves as the White House border policy adviser, traveled to Phoenix on Tuesday. He was there to speak before a specially convened joint session of the Arizona Legislature about the Trump administration’s initiatives aimed at fortifying the southern border.
Arizona stands at the forefront of efforts to fortify our southern border and safeguard American communities. Tom Homan is a true patriot whose career has been devoted to upholding our country's sovereignty and ensuring the safety of Americans," stated Arizona House Speaker Montenegro before Homan was set to appear. "Currently serving as the Border Czar under President Trump's administration, he is spearheading the much-needed federal initiative to reinstate lawfulness.
Homan's comments centered around present issues at the borders, collaboration between federal and state governments, and alterations from the prior leadership.
He arrived exactly one day following the approval by State House Republicans of a measure mandating cooperation between state and local agencies with federal immigration authorities. The decision rests with Governor Katie Hobbs of Arizona regarding its enactment into law; however, numerous state Democrats have expressed their opposition to this move.
When Republican congressmen and women gave Homan a standing ovation, Democrats chose to stand up and leave the room.
"I adore it! Thanks for brightening my day. I enjoy having critics around; they make my day every single day," Homan remarked as they exited the event.
Democratic State Senator Analise Ortiz didn't hesitate to criticize Homan's reaction. "He actually thanked us for brightening his day. These individuals find joy in tearing our families apart. That's repulsive, brutal, and unethical," she exclaimed passionately. "Homan isn’t wanted here! Go back home, Homan!" she shouted.
In response to those claims during his address on the House floor, Homan stated, "For everyone saying, 'Not many criminals in custody, Mr. Homan; shouldn’t your focus be on criminals?' Well, here’s why: because of sanctuary cities, and this is what we will continue to do."
"Following Trump taking office, millions of individuals have been deported. There have also been cases where people were held for engaging in peaceful protests or voicing their opinions at colleges, as well as those who had tattoos that certain law enforcement officers believed indicated gang affiliation," Ortiz stated.
Following the address, tensions escalated as protesters shouted at Homan and Republican officials. State Representative John Gillette seemed to gesture rudely towards the audience.
Representative Teresa Martinez expressed her dissatisfaction with her fellow Democrats in another way. "Our aim is to support public safety and speak out for the victims," she stated. "I do not align myself with terrorists, drug traffickers, rapists, or those involved in child smuggling. I refuse to be on their side."
Homan was not the sole member of Trump’s cabinet to make an appearance in Arizona this week.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is set to speak at the Border Security Expo In downtown Phoenix on Tuesday. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., was also organized various gatherings across the state on Tuesday And is anticipated to do so once more on Wednesday.
