Spartanburg Man Sentenced for Guilty Plea in 2023 Myrtle Beach Officer Shooting

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - An individual from Spartanburg County has been sentenced to more than ten years in prison for his role in a shooting incident that resulted in an injury to a Myrtle Beach law enforcement officer in 2023.

On Thursday, 19-year-old London Staggs admitted guilt to charges of first-degree assault and battery as well as firing a weapon into an inhabited vehicle, stated the solicitor’s office.

Staggs received a total of 15 years in prison; this includes 10 years for the assault conviction and an additional 5 years for the firearm offense. These sentences must be completed one after the other.

In June of 2023, The police were alerted about a questionable car and an extensive gathering in a parking structure. Upon attempting to communicate with this assembly, law enforcement was met with gunfire, resulting in the injury of one officer prior to the suspects fleeing the scene.

"The Solicitors' Office strongly supports our colleagues in law enforcement, and we have zero tolerance for assaults against police officers or any others within our jurisdiction. The incident took place at a parking structure during the Carolina Country Music Fest, which attracts numerous visitors to Myrtle Beach for enjoyable activities such as entertainment, live music, and summer festivities. Unfortunately, some individuals arrived in our area intending to disrupt these positive events. Law enforcement officials properly addressed reports of people displaying weapons," stated the Solicitors' Office.

The officer has made a recovery. In this case, six individuals were taken into custody during the probe.

The charges for his co-defendant are still outstanding.
