Man Fatally Shot by NY State Police After Opening Fire on Barracks

MALTA, New York (AP) — Authorities reported that a man died from fatal shots fired by state troopers on Wednesday following multiple rounds he discharged at a State Police barracks in upstate New York.

A "hunting-style rifle" was used by the gunman when he began shooting just before 2 p.m. at the Saratoga barracks in Malta, which is situated roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Albany, the state capital, according to a police statement.

Following a report about gunshots close to the barracks, the troopers exited the structure and confronted the suspect, resulting in fatal injuries to the person, as stated in the announcement.

The streets around the barracks were shut down approximately two hours afterwards as authorities looked into the situation.

The police stated that the shooting did not present any continuing danger to public safety.
