KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Officers with the Kinston Police Department assisted a victim of a hit and run Thursday, after the victim flagged them down for help.
The person who was harmed informed law enforcement that their vehicle had been struck by another car at the junction where East Vernon Avenue meets Highway 11, after which the perpetrator left the scene. They also gave the authorities a detailed account of what the culprit’s car looked like.
Law enforcement was summoned to aid at yet another collision soon afterward, which occurred when a vehicle struck an edifice on North East Street. En route to this event, authorities received word of a third accident—a hit-and-run—occurring on East Washington Avenue. Upon their arrival at North East Street, responding officers located the getaway car reportedly linked to all three crashes.
The suspect in all three incidents, 39 year old Frank Smith, had allegedly come to a stop on the steps of Gateway to Heaven Church after hitting a light pole. Officers reportedly found him drunk and uncooperative. While attempting to detain him, Smith allegedly assaulted officers and caused property damage.
Smith was taken into custody and faced charges including felony assault against a law enforcement official, hit-and-run incident, operating a vehicle under the influence, felony misconduct by a detainee, damage to real estate, and obstruction of a public servant.
Smith was subsequently transported to the Lenoir County Jail and assigned a secured bond.
