1 Critically Injured After Shooting Near East Side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — An individual sustained critical injuries from a shooting that occurred on the city’s near east side Wednesday evening.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stated that at approximately 7:38 p.m., they started receiving calls reporting an individual on the ground in the roadway within the 300 block of North Temple Avenue. Early information relayed to law enforcement suggested that the person found in the street had been shot.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement at the location, they discovered an adult male who had sustained injuries indicative of gunshots. The police stated that the man was neither conscious nor breathing when they encountered him.

The IMPD has verified that the individual was taken to a nearby hospital in "extremely serious condition." By 9:07 PM, the man was undergoing surgery.

As a preventive measure, IMPD dispatched teams specialized in homicides and aggravated assaults to the location. Detectives focusing on aggravated assaults along with the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency have initiated a collaborative investigation, should the victim succumb to their injuries.

Following conversations with eyewitnesses, investigators concluded that the victim was strolling down the center of the road prior to the incident. Eyewitnesses reported to law enforcement that someone began trailing the victim in an automobile. After some time had passed since the pursuit commenced, gunshots rang out.

Based on the limited information we have gathered in this specific case, we believe that this man was clearly singled out," stated IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer at a press conference. "As mentioned earlier, he was walking down the center of the road when someone responded with 'Yes.' It appears that another person began following him after that.

So far in their inquiry, IMPD hasn’t made any suspects or individuals of interest public. The police also haven’t offered a depiction of the vehicle that followed the victim.

The IMPD is urging individuals with details about the shooting to phone (317) 327-3475. For those preferring anonymity, they may reach out to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana via a call at (317) 262-8477, through the P3Tips application, or by going online. www.CrimeTips.org .
