Despite Nebraska baseball not having secured a Big Ten Conference series victory this season, they will get two opportunities to achieve one this coming weekend.
In the opening game of the series at Haymarket Park on Friday night, Nebraska secured an 8-5 victory over Rutgers. This brings Nebraska’s record for the season to 13-17 and their conference standing to 3-7, whereas Rutgers drops to 14-16 overall and 4-6 within the Big Ten.
It took 70 minutes to complete the initial two innings, during which both teams scored a total of 10 runs.
Rutgers took an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. However, Nebraska responded with five runs off six hits in the bottom half of that same inning.
In the following half-inning, the Scarlet Knights tacked on an additional three runs. The Huskers had a chance to respond when they loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout thwarted their attempt.
Riley Silva put NU back in front during the fifth inning with a hit that drove in two runs via a single to the left side. In the eighth, Dylan Carey added an extra run for the Big Red with a sacrifice fly.
Will Walsh conceded five runs on nine hits across 5.0 innings, securing the victory and moving his record to 4-4 for the season. Luke Broderick earned the save with 1.1 innings of work, permitting only one runner to reach safely.
On the evening, the Huskers notched 13 hits, with five players ending up with two hits each. Carey contributed to this effort by getting two hits himself, which he used to score three runs.
Nebraska and Rutgers will resume their rivalry on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. CDT and can be watched on B1G+.
