Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski has created history and has overtaken Ferenc Puskas to become the first player with most goals in La Liga after turning 36. The iconic record was previously held by the Hungarian icon, who had scored 21 goals after turning 36.

The former Bayern Munich forward scored two goals against Girona and helped Barcelona secure a crucial 4-1 victory on Sunday, March 30. The match was tied at 1-1 when Lewandowski netted his first goal in the 61st minute. Fermin Lopez was the one who had assisted Lewandowski.

In the 77th minute, Lewandowski once again saw his name on the scoresheet as he extended the Catalan's lead to 3-1. It was Ferran Torres in the 86th minute with the match winning goal as the team leapfrogged Real Madrid in the points table.

Before the match, Lewandowski had 20 goals to his name in the Spanish top-tier football after turning 36. With this, the former Borussia Dortmund star has now overtaken the Real Madrid legend. The Poland international has been in exceptional form this season as he has 38 goals and three assists to his name in the 42 appearances across all competitions.

In addition to this, he leads as the top scorer in La Liga this season with 25 goals. He surpasses the second-place player Kylian Mbappe by three goals. Furthermore, Lewandowski has managed to score in eight out of their last nine matches for Barcelona.

Following their victory with a score of 4-1 against Girona on Sunday, Barcelona’s defender Eric Garcia stated that each upcoming match will essentially feel like a ‘must-win’ situation for the Catalans as they aim for yet another La Liga championship. During this particular game, Garcia played as a defensive midfielder for Barcelona, maintaining an impressive pass completion rate of 94%, along with securing two successful duels.

Hansi Flick’s squad is riding a wave of success with an impressive nine-game winning run under their belt. Their most recent loss dates back to December 2024. In total, they've played 29 matches and accumulated 66 points, placing them three points clear at the top above Real Madrid who sit in second spot.

In contrast, Real Madrid has achieved 19 victories this season. Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals on Wednesday, April 2nd.
