Spain-Based Duo Eager to Make a Case for the Socceroos

A refreshed Awer Mabil is thriving in Spanish football, eager to showcase his skills and intent on earning a spot back with the Socceroos.

Mabil, aged 29, was a consistent player during most of Graham Arnold's time as coach, however, he hasn't received an invitation since Tony Popovic took over.

The upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia and China might be too early for Mabil, as he has only just joined the Spanish Segunda División team CD Castellon.

However, the winger strongly believes he can adapt to Popovic's style.

"It’s all about relishing my time playing football and putting in hard work for my club. When the national team coach reaches out and believes I can contribute, I’m ready to step up," Mabil stated.

It's clear that Tony has excelled in his role since taking over. I've kept up with the team closely... and have been backing them remotely, and they’ve performed admirably.

Evidently, the approach to playing has evolved. Nowadays, they utilize wing-backs along with two number tens.

It works perfectly for me since that’s the style we use at our club. Therefore, I believe it would greatly benefit me. It would make it much simpler for me to adjust.

I believe I can consistently assist the Socceroos. I feel I have performed well in the past. And I am certain there is still more I can contribute.

When the moment arrives, I believe the coach will clarify what he needs from me for the team, and I’ll strive to accomplish that with all my capabilities.

Mabil is thoroughly enjoying his renewed opportunity in Spanish football.

He signed with La Liga's Cadiz in 2022 but only managed to make six appearances for them.

He mentioned that he felt as though he had some unresolved matters.

Clearly, I missed out on playing time in Cadiz... which really affected me during the World Cup since I hadn’t gotten much action with Cadiz prior to it.

However, the coach (Arnold) believed in me enough to include me in the World Cup squad, despite my lack of playing time.

Yes, indeed, I have a sense of what I wish to accomplish during my time in Spain.

Fringe Socceroos midfielder Denis Genreau, 25, just moved to Deportivo La Coruna after a long stint in Toulouse, and wants game time to press his case for a first call-up under Popovic.

"I am really eager to have another chance to represent my country," he stated.

However, for now, Mabil and Genreau have their sights set on confronting each other at Nou Estadi Castàlia early Tuesday morning (AEDT), and neither of them will pull punches.

"When we last met, we were sharing rooms as part of the national team," Genreau stated.

It's always incredibly awesome spotting another Aussie on the opposite end of the globe.

Mabil added, "I'm really looking forward to seeing my friend once more."

For about 90 minutes, we might not remain friends temporarily.

This will be an excellent match for each of us and our respective teams—let’s see who comes out on top.
