How Consistent Bedtime Routines Are Transforming Sleep Quality Across India

In the fast pace of contemporary Indian life, an unnoticed wave of sleep disruptions is causing significant harm—but fresh findings indicate that a remedy may be easier than we imagine. A report from YouGov and Amazon Alexa, published shortly before World Sleep Day (on March 14), reveals that over fifty percent of Indians are grappling with this issue. The online survey took place in February 2025 and included more than 1000 participants from 10 different cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Jaipur, and Ahmedabad.

According to the survey, 53% of participants face sleep problems when they do not adhere to a consistent bedtime schedule. This suggests that many adults maintain such routines—among those surveyed, 54% reported better quality sleep after implementing a regular sleeping pattern.

Based on the data collected, 52% of participants adhere to regular sleep schedules and pre-bedtime rituals. The study indicates that 86% of those polled initiate their nighttime routines from 8 PM onward daily, among whom 53% commence their evening preparations post-10:30 PM.

Online pursuits rule nighttime routines

The top activities included in nighttime rituals consist of viewing videos (63%), interacting with loved ones (59%), enjoying podcasts, music, or audiobooks (58%), and browsing social media applications (57%). Couples living together show the greatest tendency towards engaging in these practices within their nightly routines compared to households of different compositions.

Remarkably, half of the participants utilize voice assistants for setting things up. sleep routines -- More individuals aged 35-45 years are utilizing voice assistants compared to those aged 25-34 years.

Voice assistants are increasingly becoming integral parts of nightly rituals.

"Growing trends show an increased interest in sleep routines, with notable advancements coming from smart technology—particularly voice assistants such as Alexa. These tools are proving invaluable for individuals trying to adhere to consistent bedtimes. Voice-activated artificial intelligence offers practical solutions over traditional hand-held screens at night-time. From initiating guided meditations and soothing tunes to enjoying audio books and melodies, along with scheduling alerts and alarms or managing smart home settings to optimize sleeping conditions, people discover creative methods to integrate Alexa into their nightly rituals. Users find it straightforward to configure these nighttime sequences via the Alexa application according to individual requirements and tastes,” explains Teena Sidana, Country Manager of Alexa India.

Households that include parents and children are at the forefront of this trend, particularly those with couples and kids leading in adopting voice assistants for their nightly rituals. Among various groups, 45% utilize voice interfaces to access calming materials such as music and podcasts, 23% employ them for scheduling reminders and alarms, and another 22% use these devices to manage smart home features including bedside lighting, automatic drapes, and air conditioning settings.

Increasing fascination with wellness practices before bedtime

Despite the prevalence of digital use before bed, the research highlights shifting desires towards wellness-centric practices. More than fifty percent of participants showed enthusiasm for integrating activities such as meditation, writing in journals, and gentle workouts into their nightly routines. skincare routines into their pre-sleep regimens.

Families both with and without kids expressed significant interest in mindfulness activities, where 32% aimed to incorporate meditation and journaling into their evening routines. On the other hand, 34% of participants were keen on sipping calming drinks or having mild treats prior to sleeping—although sleep specialists typically advise avoiding substantial intake near bedtime.

Modifying habits for bedtime routines

The research further indicates that approximately 21% presently enjoy consuming food and snacks close to their bedtime. There is an increasing trend of interest in this behavior, as evidenced by the fact that 34% wish to indulge in a calming drink or treat before going to sleep.

Other items people often add to their sleep regimen wishlists consist of engaging in brain games, solving puzzles, and reading instead of using phones. Additionally, some like to relax with music, listen to podcasts, or catch up on news updates before bed. Notably, an interesting group making up 11% preferred the idea of “doing nothing” rather than adhering to any specific bedtime routine.

For individuals facing difficulties with their sleep, this study conveys a straightforward message: maintaining regularity is crucial, and discovering the appropriate series of relaxation routines—be they technology-driven or not—might hold the secret to achieving better quality sleep at night.
