Power-Up for Pioneering Electric Vehicles in Australia

Toyota's initial, and currently sole, electric vehicle available in Australia is poised for substantial improvements, featuring enhanced power capabilities along with an updated design scheduled to be released later this year.

The Toyota bZ4X , which was launched in 2024, has been a comparatively minor player in the Toyota The pond saw less than 1000 sales rack up from February through December 2024.

Toyota expects the refreshed bZ4X to arrive locally in the fourth quarter of 2025, with additional specifics such as price points and extra technical data set to be finalized nearer to the release time.

Leading the update for the bZ4X is an adjusted electric motor, which now comes with a bigger 74.7kWh battery replacing the current 71.4kWh one.

The bZ4X is available with two configurations: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The single-motor variant boasts an increased power output of 165kW, which is 15kW higher than previously offered. In contrast, the dual-motor setup sees a substantial boost of 92kW, resulting in a total system output of 252kW when both motors are engaged.

As a consequence, the 0-100km/h acceleration has been shortened by 1.8 seconds, now reaching 5.1 seconds.

At present, Toyota has not detailed exactly how the incrementally larger size will be implemented. battery and increased outputs impact the bZ4X’s driving range, with Toyota claiming 535km for the front-wheel-drive version and 485km for the all-wheel-drive variant.

Nonetheless, Toyota states that the battery's thermal management has been enhanced for superior performance and faster charging in colder conditions—a point of critique when the vehicle was first released in Europe.

Inside, the bZ4X’s interior has seen "a complete overhaul," with the standout feature being a new element. 14.0-inch multimedia touchscreen .

The exterior has been updated as well, featuring the bZ4X embracing more of Toyota’s 'Hammerhead' frontal styling approach, along with glossy black accents adorning the wheel arches.

Although the bZ4X hasn't made waves in the market yet, Toyota Australia states that they remain dedicated to electric vehicles and mention that additional models are forthcoming.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, informed CarsGuide that contrary to common opinion, they anticipate electric vehicles will constitute a significantly larger segment of the new car market than present figures suggest.

"So the notion that electric vehicles will continuously decrease their presence further south is incorrect. In reality, they'll expand. Yes, let’s be clear about this: they’ll grow," Hanley states.

And that’s why we must be involved in this stage, as it’s inevitable.

Earlier this week, Toyota unveiled the C-HR+ electric vehicle in Europe; however, it seems that it will be limited to the European market for now.
