Google revealed on Friday that it plans to phase out Google Assistant by the end of this year, opting instead for Gemini, its new AI-driven assistant.
The technology company revealed its plans in a blog post, detailing how they intend to shift customers using various devices over to the superior AI system.
Although Google hasn't offered a precise schedule for this change, the company has stated that by the end of the year, Google Assistant will no longer be available on the majority of smartphones.
Launched in 2016, Google Assistant was mainly developed using natural language processing and speech recognition technologies. Conversely, Gemini, which debuted recently, is an advanced AI-driven assistant equipped with capabilities for sophisticated reasoning, multi-modal comprehension (including text, visuals, and sound), and richer user engagements.
Google reports that millions of users have made the switch from Assistant to Gemini, and the company intends to broaden this transition to additional mobile devices over the next few months.
To further our efforts in developing the world's most useful assistant, we have redesigned the experience with AI as the foundation, making Gemini your individual,AI-driven helper. Even though our standards for what an assistant should be capable of are evolving quickly, our objective stays unchanged.
The firm also mentioned that "a considerable number of individuals have transitioned from using Google Assistant to Gemini, and these users are sharing how beneficial the advanced AI-driven functionalities are in their everyday routines. Therefore, we aim to inform you about our plans for making this improved experience accessible to an even larger audience."
To make the switch smoother, the firm has added well-loved functionalities from Google Assistant, like playing music and configuring timers, into Gemini.
