2026 Toyota bZ4X: Power and Range Boosted, Rivaling the Model Y with Confirmed Aussie Launch

The Toyota bZ4X This is the most recent mid-life refresh for the Japanese automotive leader's electric vehicle (EV), offering improved driving distance, increased horsepower, upgraded cabin features, and a modernized exterior design.

Introduced in Europe, Toyota Australia has also announced the updated version of this model. bZ4X will arrive at local dealerships during the last quarter of 2025 (from October through December), with specific prices to be announced nearer the release date.

The visual updates feature Toyota’s newest 'hammerhead' front grille, accompanied by slimmer LED headlamps, fog lamps positioned higher up, a more angular lower bumper, and vertical-side air curtains for enhanced style and aerodynamics.

The back end seems mostly untouched, with glossy black wheel arch moldings replacing the matte black appearance seen in the current models.

Inside, the main infotainment screen has been upgraded with newer software and increased in size from 12.3 to 14.0 inches, which led to the relocation of the start button beside the steering column and the addition of two knobs flanking the display.

The climate control system has misplaced its rocker switches for adjusting temperature and fan speed; however, knobs for temperature settings have appeared instead. The remaining functionalities are managed through buttons on the display screen.

The position of the gear selection dial has been shifted farther rearward, placing it behind a set of uncovered wireless smartphone chargers located on either side instead of being hidden beneath a lid on the center console.

Although the 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster stays intact, it seems to be less encased by the dashboard than before. The change might allow for better visibility; however, it isn’t certain whether this also means an elevation from its previous placement since seeing the display with the steering wheel at its uppermost setting could still be obstructed in the present model.

Although these modifications are quite substantial, Toyota has implemented additional improvements beneath the surface. These updates aim to boost both the bZ4X’s power output and extend its driving range.

The single-motor, front-wheel-drive versions now deliver 165 kW of power, an increase of 15 kW. Consequently, this improvement has shortened its 0-100 km/h acceleration time by approximately one-tenth, which is currently measured at 7.4 seconds.

It's uncertain whether there has been an improvement in torque output as well; however, considering the slight reduction in acceleration time, it appears improbable. The previous version of the model delivers 266Nm of torque.

The top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive bZ4X has seen an increase in power, jumping from 160kW to 252kW, reducing its acceleration time for 0-100km/h down to just 5.1 seconds – which is 1.8 seconds faster compared to the present version.

Toyota says they've enhanced the efficiency of the electric motors in both power systems, thanks to an increased capacity battery pack as well.

The 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack found in the present bZ4X models available in Australia has been increased to 73.1kWh. This enhancement leads to an advertised driving range of 573km for front-wheel-drive versions and 520km for all-wheel-drive configurations.

These two figures are stated by Toyota according to the WLTP cycle, indicating substantial advancements over the previous claims of 436km and 411km for pre-updated models sold in Australia.

For the first time, Toyota has equipped the bZ4X with battery preconditioning, enabling it to support faster charging rates by maintaining the optimum temperature of the battery pack.

The automaker states they have set a "development objective for fast charging within roughly 30 minutes even when temperatures drop below freezing points (below -10 degrees Celsius)."

The price in Australia might increase from the present $66,600 plus on-road fees for front-wheel-drive bZ4X models and $74,900 including on-road charges for the all-wheel-drive versions.

While Toyota has previously ruled out Following suit after other brands by reducing the price points of their electric vehicles (EVs), the market for mid-sized electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs) has grown more competitive.

The expansion of Australia’s electric vehicle market is decelerating as well, with only 9,516 battery-driven cars sold between January and February 2025—a decline exceeding one-third compared to the 15,004 units sold during the equivalent timeframe the previous year.

The local deliveries of the bZ4X began in February of the previous year, with less than 1000 units distributed throughout 2024, ranking it at number 19 in the yearly electric vehicle sales competition.
