Accra, March 15, GNA - Dr Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has reiterated the Government of Ghana's dedication to enhancing cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO). This partnership aims at tackling crucial labor challenges and fostering better employment opportunities within the country.
Dr. Pelpuo shared these comments when he received a courtesy visit from Dr. Vanessa Phala-Moyo at his office in Accra. She serves as the Country Director for the ILO Office overseeing Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, along with the ECOWAS Liaison Office.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the enduring collaboration between Ghana and the ILO. He praised the organization for its efforts in enhancing workplace conditions and ensuring that Ghana’s labor regulations conform to global benchmarks.
In a statement relayed to the Ghana News Agency, the Ministry reported that the Minister highlighted key sectors where the ILO’s assistance would be crucial. These include completing the drafting of the Labour Bill, 2024 to establish an all-encompassing legislative foundation for labor relations, as well as updating the National Employment Policy to align with present labor market conditions.
Other measures include efforts to eliminate child labor and protect susceptible workers, along with the adoption of crucial labor conventions to reinforce Ghana’s dedication to international labor norms.
Dr. Phala-Moyo, along with National Project Officers managing different ILO initiatives in Ghana, updated the Minister on current projects and potential avenues for future cooperation.
The discussions focused on concluding the Labour Bill from 2024, advancing the third phase of the Decent Work Country Programme, eradicating child labor, and bolstering Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) organizations.
Other important subjects encompassed Ghana's involvement in discussions about fair trade practices, the advancement of occupational safety and health (OSH) initiatives, as well as improving labor rights and workplace conditions.
Dr. Pelpuo highlighted the Ministry's dedication to cultivating a work environment that supports employment opportunities and boosts economic development.
He embraced ongoing cooperation with the ILO and voiced hope that this alliance would significantly benefit workers and employers throughout the nation.
